Absolutely agree about never going under a car with just the jack holding it up. Axle stands are cheap so there is no excuse for not getting a pair. Get them under there with you. )))

Never thought of using a oil pump the only problem I've got is the oil filter is on the bottom of the engine on my car so I still have to Jack it up to get at it And before you say it I do use axial stands lol Good video

Do you find that you really get all (or 99%) of the old oil out with a pump, compared to opening the drain in the pan? (You can tell by how much oil you pulled out and/or how much new oil you had to put in). I would think that you aren't really pulling from the lowest point if you go in through the dipstick hole. (I'm just wondering. I don't really KNOW anything about this.) I change the oil in our Jeep Wrangler because I can fit underneath, but my little Nissan sits way too low, so I'm happy to learn this technique.

Nice idea Chris but...what about the swarf in the bottom of the sump which invariablly gets there from wear on the bores/big and little ends and cams etc, even past the filter. Conscious that the pump out method doesnt fully clear the sump down...which doing it via the sump plug method is more likely too and why theres often a magnet on the back of the sump plug to get it in one place . Appreciate its a more messy method though. Some cars dont even have a sump plug fitted these days though. eg smart cars. Nothing worse than not changing the oil regular. its like having a steel file in oil suspension, wearing the white bearings away. I tend to change every 6k miles.

Method 2 is a no brainer. I too do it this way. And as if it wasn't easy enough, I make it easier again by using a 12v electric pump. Oil and filter change in around 10 mins 👍

What you called the traditional way will remain the best, for those who aren't friendly to safety and lazy to check underneath the car they will follow your method.

Fortuitous timing Ben, if you have the room the bigger pumps which also contain the oil are very convenient. Happy oil changing! 👍

Cool way of doing an oil change and not one that's taught - I'd probably remove the oil filler cap when using the suction device, though. I'm lucky that my '98 Maxima is high enough off the ground that I can slide a pan under and drain the oil the usual way without having to jack up the car. Plus the oil filter is near the sump, so I have to skooch under anyways, again without lifting the car. I'd never leave a car on a jack and not use stands if I'm crawling underneath - bad advice, Scotty!

I don't like that method. I prefer to drain the old oil trough the sump plug hole with the car lifted a little to create a angle to make sure all the oil( most of it )get out. After the drain, i even put a little amount of fresh oil to push the remain old oil out. Always pre filled my oil filters to minimize the inevitable dry start after the change. Your method is great for people that unfortunately are hurt and can't be under a car with the filter location like yours. Cool idea! Keep the videos coming!

After sucking old oil, you can still add new oil and suck it up as well just like you want to drain out any old remaining oil correct?
@Umski
@Umski 5 жыл бұрын
I like the idea due to the ease of not crawling around but not convinced it's as thorough - with the traditional method allowing gravity to drain the oil out of the sump draws any heavy particulates out with the oil which wouldn't necessarily be the case with the pump. It can also be left for a short time to allow those last few drips of oil and bits to come out. Last thing is if you have a magnetic sump plug and it's got bits of metal stuck to it, it's an opportunity to clean that off. In my experience of changing oil, which I've done dozens of times, I've never changed a copper washer and never had a leak - as long as the plug isn't done up too tight the washer seems to seal up okay. Depending on the car, it's not always necessary to jack it up - I can do my current Volvo V40 without jacks, so really the main benefit of the pump method is having to roll around on your back and bottling up the used oil...I might try it one day ;)

This method gets rid of almost all the oil. Unless a car is taked upwards perfectly level, there will always be some oil left in the sump no matter how long you leave the plug off - so for anyone who has to jack up their car or drive up a kerb to change their oil, this is an easier way to do it. If you heat a copper washer cherry red and quench it it water it anneals it and makes it very soft. This can help prevent leaks with an old work-hardened copper washer. Cheers, Chris

Great job on all pts. Maybe this will help remove or partially remove my dipstick which broke off and cant be pulled out. It's worth a shot. Agree-never use jack only & get under your car. Not cool, funny or macho. Jack can fail or get moved by your own legs, someone walking by or another car jostling you. Broken back or other body parts is not fun.

Used a vacuum oil extractor for 10 years. Got it because my car has an undertray & I couldn't be bothered to remove it. Thought I'd take it to a garage every second oil change for them remove the sump plug. Did that once and haven't bothered since. The car is now 16 years old with 140,000 miles and the sump plug hasn't been touched in 8 years. On all oil extractor videos there's comments about sludge and swarf not coming out. I've never seen sludge come out of a drain plug, if it did there's a heck of a lot more still in sump. So it would need removing and cleaning. If you've got bits of metal in the oil, then even an oil change from the sump plug isn't going to make the engine last much longer.

nice vid, i have however hit dislike purely as you haven't linked the hand pump as you said in your vid, thought you might find it handy to know. I presume you're aware of amazon's affiliate program where you can get paid for items bought through links you share?

Hi there, yes I left it out on purpose initially... KZbin don't like you driving traffic away from their site so if I upload with Amazon affiliate links (which I do make money with) it has a tendency to hurt the vid. The link will be there soon enough, once the vid has had a wee bit of traffic. In the meantime here you go: amzn.to/2UI5zo6 )link supports my channel) Thank you for telling me what the dislike was for, that is always useful feedback for me. Cheers, Chris

Easy peasy David! The bigger pumps which collect the oil have a larger volume pump and store the oil without any mess at all, so if you ave the room to store it I'd probably get one of those. Cheers, Chris 👍
