Finally a video about the ugly truth of this sport, but it's so fun you want to master it. Your squat stance is what helped me learn to keep the board nose down. "Can you blow it up? Surely not.." I was laughing out loud from start to end. You nailed it. I want to try that thing now. I've always been skeptical about kiting, all those lines scare me to death, but that winging ting seems like a relatively safe alternative to windsurfing and kiting and perfect for traveling as all you need is one foil, a board and a wing... and some wind obviously.

Tell me about it, two weeks ago I went wingsurfing for the first time with a wing from a friend. The only thing they said was, try not to fall onto the wing and have fun, not much can go wrong. Half an hour later I had blown up the wing by letting a wave hit it against the foil. Lesson learned the hard way ....

Ohhh I want to try one so bad!! Grew up in the Gorge and not been on the water to kite before but I’ve longboarded all my life and those wings are prolly easier to skate with as long as the wind is right. It looks incredible! Coil leash attached to your waist is your answer Ben. You can just use a coil sup leash attached to a belt at a push. You can also attach your wing leash to the belt, keeps your hands free. Easier to learn without straps too as you can adjust your foot position. You definitely need a shim on to stabilizer to reduce the lift too. I'm about 20 sessions in now, things get really fun once you get gybing and ride sure swell!

@Beachbumextraordinaire4 жыл бұрын
It's been less than a year since winging was introduced and I'm already seeing riders pushing 20 knots on their quivers plus airs that are quite decent (again keeping in mind how new this discipline is) One manufacturer already has harness lines on offer for their wings - which suggests we could be seeing more and more in terms of performance. Give this thing another year or two and I believe we'll be seeing more userfriendly and mature equipment. But as it stands there is potential. Imagine: Carry a 6-foot board under one arm, the foil in a case with the other hand, and the wing all folded up in a backpack. Ultimate in portability...

You make it look too easy. Most people struggle a lot more, especially windsurfers as they want to hang on to the sail. My tip: Hold the back hand with just 2 fingers, don't go and hang on it, stay on your feet, especially front foot, and always push the board down. And remember the necessary ingredients: speed and commitment ! No speed no foiling, no commitment it the foil will foil you!

You need more rake on your mast mate. Rake it back and your nose goes up. If that still feels funky tilt the frontwing down a little (leading edge down), but that shouldnt be necessary on a production hydrofoil. Having the nose up also greatly eases jibing because youll just plane through instead of nosedive if you hit the water. Also, get some F-One kit instead :p, lower aspect wingdings are easier and you have less tip dragging ;). I'd use 4.2sqm Swing + 1780cm2 high aspect wingfoil / foilpumping (F-One Phantom) wing in the kind of wind in the video with my 93kgs. Ps. Do you use the teletubby camera to make you seem taller on video?

Just a few tips: most of the time the wing inflates to about 8psi. Secondly, I find it much easier to flip the front hand to underarm grip because you always want the front hand higher than the back otherwise the wing tip touches the water. Last of all I don't think there's much point in using foot straps for you because it's flat water and if you're powered up you want to move your feet forward anyway but maybe just taking your back foot out of the strap and moving it forward is enough.

There's a lot to be said to using the wing on an SUP when you first get the wing - or on a windsurf longboard. That's the same argument as using the foil board on its own first, to adapt to the coordination needed. Your wing also looks a bit big. On the lake in Cape Town they teach - in light winds - with a 5m wing.
