You change a ton of the suspension components, and then whine that the truck doesn’t tow things correctly. Ever think maybe you’re the cause of that problem? I do. I have a 2021 Ram 1500 and it tows my 6000lb camper no problem. My truck is stock. I have the 5.7 without the hybrid system, and the 392 gears. I get 20 miles per gallon on the highway at 70mph (not towing of course). Great truck.

Shocks and struts are not a ton of suspension components. Plus, I’ve towed before and after the level kit and it still sucked.

I lifted my truck 3 inches +33 inch tires and lost 1 mpg on average. Him leveling the truck didn't effect his mileage. The fuel mileage is just that bad.

Leveling does affect mpg and the gas mileage will improve over time as the engine breaks in.

I have no skin in the game and thank you for your review. I did want to let you know that leveling does affect the wind resistance and can increase the air turbulence in the bed, thus lowering your fuel economy. Good luck with your next chooce.

I don't know what you're talking about with "white-knuckling" when towing 5,500 lbs. I towed a 70 Charger on a U-Haul trailer (roughly 6,000 lbs) all the way from Idaho to Pennsylvania and back and I certainly wasn't white-knuckling or felt like I was being pushed all over the road. 2020 Ram 1500 Limited, 5.7 non-eTorque, 4x4, 3.21 gears, factory air ride.

I have a similar Lonestar bighorn, 3.21 gearing. I bought an off market trailerbrake controller, rough country leveling shocks in front and rc struts in rear. I don't have the downhill desent control or the axel lock. Heck, I don't tow heavier than 7,000 lbs and that's a long trailer full of fire wood. Also, you need a tonneau cover. It will allow for a more efficient stream to pass over the truck. It will add 2 to 3 mpg to trips. Without it, the air hitting the tailgate acts like an air sail brake, thus, decreasing gas mileage. Finally, you needed the 2500. You should have had the 3.92 ratio on your 1500, with the 26 or 33 gallon tank.

I had a 2017 Ram Big Horn that would get 21 to 22 mpg on the two lane at 68 mph. On the Interstate at 80 to 83 mph, it would drop down to around 18. Of course wind here in the Dakotas is a big issue and makes or breaks your mileage. My 2022 Ram 1500 doesn’t get as good of mileage as the Big Horn did, but I don’t have the same tires on it. The big lug tires are a mileage killer, I run either the Toyo Open Country H/T III’s or the Yokohama Geolander HT G056 tires. Both were better than the factory tires for mpg.

I'd take this review with a grain of salt. My dad had put 150k on 15' (my brother has it now) and now has a 21 without e torque. He got great mileage with both and routinely gets over 20 highway average on road trips in Montana at higher elevation going the 80 mph speed limit. No issues with towing his boat and he's towing now a cargo trailer across country comfortably. Even my 08 Ram 1500 with 3.92 towed that amount comfortably in the mountains in Montana with air bags. The rear differential didn't' hold up... but it was comfortable. As far as the mileage go you'd be amazed at how much those wheels, tires & level will affect your mpg. You kind of sacrifice your critique if you've made these modifications. To be clear I'm not a huge Ram fan coming to defend this truck but this was someone who didn't option their truck correctly. You needed 3.92 gear ratios for that level/tires/towing, you could have easily put air bags on, got a better hitch, got a trailer with brakes or bought a lighter aluminum car trailer. All of these things would have been cheaper than daily driving a 3/4. It wasn't that you "needed" a 3/4 ton to tow 5 times a year.
@sorta_stock
@sorta_stock Жыл бұрын
The “modifications” to this truck were mainly factory options (ram rebel) with a very similar MPG rating. Yes, this truck has 3.21 gears. I didn’t get to pick every option as this is what the dealership had. This was my review of the 1500 coming from a previous 2500 owner. You can obviously disagree but, don’t try to discredit my review based on your own opinion. “Comfort” is completely relative. For the money these new trucks cost, I wasn’t worth it in my opinion. I’m more than happy going back to an older 2500.

I was driving from East TN to Tucson AZ for a couple years with my 2019 Ram 1500 crewcab 5.7 Etorg 4 X 4 with 2.31 positrack. It averaged 22.00 mpg westbound door to door 1950 miles and 21.20 mpg eastbound 1950 miles. The truck always had two adults a 100. pd dog and a fully loaded bed both ways. My average speed was 77 mph. I did a lot of 80 to 90 mph driving. As far as mileage, this truck out the dozens I have owned over the last 60 years of truck ownership is the best hands down. The only truck close to it was a 1995 Nissan, V-6 3.0 ltr, extended cab, 2 wheel drive automatic. It got 22 mpg no matter how you drove it, but it was about half the truck of the 2019 Ram.

I thought I researched it well but it seems like since I bought it all I have read are horror stories of things breaking and leaking. Now I’m starting to worry that I bought a money pit. I know several people who own them and have had 0 problems though. I’m glad to see you’ve had no problems for 4 years as well. I guess people who post online mostly post complaints, and you never hear from the ones who have no issues. That’s what I’m going with at least.

Your gauge screen has nothing to do with being a "Bighorn", just check the right boxes when ordering. My Bighorn is about as loaded as you can get and it has the large programable screen in the dash. Also, did the trailer you towed have any kind of load hitch, I run mine with an Andersen hitch towing my toy hauler, truck is a beast and super smooth. I also have the trailer brake controller and the trailer steering knob...both work excellent

We’ve talked about it. My 2019 get about 12 mpg completely stock. I’ve fell the same way about towing, the ability to push in body parts with little effort, and the gas guzzling. It is a great around the tow truck, rides so nice, huge cab area to fit 4-6 people, and tech is decent. I personally use the 4 wheel auto. I have the towing gears so that with 4 wheel auto make the truck have some tack off torque.

I have a 2022 warlock 5.7 hemi no e-torque. I'm getting 17-18 around town and over 20 on the hiway. Problem with e-torque, that nobody's talking about is how much horse power it takes to run the e-torque. It takes about 12 horse power to run the old type fans so I can imagine it takes quite a bit to run e-torque. They also don't tell you about how much it costs to replace the 48v battery. ($8,000). It's the same as the start-stop feature, it's a joke. I've two vehicles with start-stop and I've tested it several time with it on and off and I always get better MPG with it off. Tell me you don’t know what comes in the “tow package” without telling me lol. Gotta look at the actual specs. Utilizing a Uhaul trailer negates the biggest addition to the truck via a “tow package” option - the brake controller. The mirrors are the only other addition via that package. Rebel rims & tires are 1/2 again as heavy as the stock rims and tires (I did the same change). Increasing the height at the front of the truck changes your aerodynamics. And you're towing, which skews your mileage from EPA ratings a LOT. You can't compare a diesel vs gasser for towing. And all trucks these days will have bedsides that bow like that... They're making them lighter for better EPA ratings. Your complaints about the manifold is valid. But is covered under warranty.
@sorta_stock
@sorta_stock Ай бұрын
The mileage shown was without towing. Ram rebels have the same MPG ratings so, the wheels and tires should have no impact. Leveling the truck most certainly impacted my economy. That was probably the only mod that truly did. Losing 33% efficiency by simply leveling the truck is pathetic. My old ‘99 Dodge Ram 1500 felt more stable towing on the road (although severely underpowered). While this truck was decent for what it was, I don’t see how they command such an astonishing price tag.
@willmorton6800
@willmorton6800 Ай бұрын
@@sorta_stock Well, I can't fault you on the price tag... But like everything else, prices have gone up way more than they should have. As for the difference between Rebel and big horn, I do not believe they tested both a Rebel and a "stock" truck. They're both 1500s therefore they both got the same numbers. When I went to the larger, heavier rims and tires, I lost about 1.5mpg of city driving. Which is what's expected according to the reading I did online before doing the swap. It's quite obvious that if you change the weight of the tires, it's going to cost you in mileage - all the starting from a stop is a lot of interia to get moving. As for towing, I'm not sure what the problem you experienced was, but I towed an enclosed trailer over 6000km across Canada packed with all my belonging that was well over 5000lbs. Through mountains in Winter. I averaged 13.8mpg for the trip. And I had no issues towing it, without any load balance help. Is it possible your trailer is not properly balanced? Is the replacement suspension you put in causing problems? Etc etc. In any case, I'm assuming it's long gone from your possession now, so it's a moot point - but I just think your experience is not the norm with these trucks. I'm on my 3rd and I stil like mine.

Got no problem with 10mpg (I build and own classics mainly). I just don’t think the new rams are worth the bank note with what’s offered. The 10mpg combined with a 21 gal tank is ridiculous. MPG’s has a lot to do with the person driving. You may put your foot into a little bit more from stop to go. You may drive a little faster on the highway. It just depends. I get almost 25 mpg in mine. But like I said, it depends on the driver. I never go over 65 on the highway and I don’t take off very fast.

Interesting review on your truck. It sounds like you prefer a Cummins over a gas, so why did you opt for a half ton when you had a 1 ton? You can't compare the two. Of course a 1 ton is going to tow better and handle better towing than a half ton. A 1500 can tow, but it's not made to tow consistently or with heavy loads. I've towed with my half ton 1500, but does it tow like my 2500 or 350 did, most certainly not. I also don't tow as much as I used to which is why I opted to go with a half ton. Plus now I spend a lot more time driving for my job. I also think driving style has a lot to do with your mpg. If you live in the city and you deal with stop and go traffic all the time your mpg is going to be garbage. If you have a heavy foot and like to hear your Hemi come to life your mpg is going to suck. Now, if I drove how I like to drive, which is with a heavy foot and like to pass everything but the fuel station, then my mpg would be about 10 mpg. However, I've learned to tone it back and set my cruise control and do the speed limit on the highway, and I'm averaging 20mpg with the 26 gal tank. I wish I had the larger tank, but I bought it used. The problem with all new trucks is they all have issues, they are not made well, components are cheaply made but expensive to replace, and they don't last. Nothing is made like it used to. The manufactures don't care about this, because they know consumers will buy their products anyway. This is my first Ram, and only time will tell if I decide to keep it. The days of having a vehicle for 20 years are over. Appreciate your review and honesty. Have fun with the Cummins.

I do love the gen 3 Cummins trucks but, was wanting something a little newer with more space for the little ones. I was expecting a downgrade in towing capability but, didn’t realize it would be so drastic. Especially since the tow “ratings” were similar. I went back with an older Dodge and let the wife get something newer for the road trips.

I get average 19mpg in my 2020 v6 ram. Ppl need to just understand the reality of the world if your towing once in a while a pop up, a trailer of toys, lawnmower or a boat. Most things are under 4000lbs a v6 will do it. Ppl get these v8s like they are pulling a bulldozer everyday, 85% of ppl don't need a v8 unless you use it for work. If your pulling 5000+ and you need a v8 you need a 2500 or bigger and lets face it if your camping twice a year you dont need a huge camper or truck that big. You see all these v8s on the road and 95% of these ppl have never pulled anything that they need a v8 for they just like burning money driving it everyday.
@tylervance0146
@tylervance0146 11 ай бұрын
Exactly. If you go on any online group, youtube comment, etc. it's full of ego boys acting like a truck needs a v8 for validation 😂. Besides ego, what are you buying a v8 for? So you can cut off your muffler and make it loud? Cause we know you ain't towing shit, and you only hook something up so you can take a picture for ya fb group lol. I've had 3 Silverados, and I live in Chicago doing contract work for multiple properties. I tell my boys I was getting 8mpg with the 08 5.3 in the city, but getting 15.8 with my 4.3 now. Have only towed once with any of my trucks. In 10 years, why the f do I need a v8
@shawnystixify
@shawnystixify 11 ай бұрын
actually a v6 is better for contractors if you don't tow because the lighter the engine means the more weight you can put in the bed of your truck. That's why work trucks have a v6 in them standard and the v8 is optional.

Wrong..... I have a 2014 Ram 1500 Crewcab and it pulls a 26ft travel trailer that weighs around 6,000lbs everywhere including up pretty steep grades. Its because I have the tow package and know how to use it with gear up and gear down. Sometimes I forget the trailer is back there. So you cant tell everyone they need a 3/4 ton truck that rides rough just to to over 5,000lbs. Thats just horse shit. Plenty of power and smooth with the 5.7l Hemi. I beg to differ.

I have same year same engine, 4x4 off road and tow package groups. No mods yet. As for 1/2 tons go I have never been impressed with any manufacturers tow #'s because in my experience it was always a "white knuckle" experience with any decent weight behind me. Acceleration, STOPPING, and as you said "getting pushed around". Now I'm talking hd trailers, loaded grain wagons, anhydrous nitrogen tanks. Absolutely go with a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel for those/your common applications. But also, even though it shouldn't, IMO, Anytime you level a 1/2 ton and then you put that tongue weight on it completely disrupts the handling of the 1/2 ton alot more than the larger trucks unless you compensate for it with rear airbags or such. My truck doesn't come close to Rams stated MPG either but in fairness i don't go on long drives as of yet either to get data. I am gonna put in a S&B CAI along with a tuner very soon in order to turn off the MDS, hopefully get better performance and mpg, or at least stay about the same mpg, out of her. I think that even if you did these mods your not gonna get what you hope for out of a 1/2 ton. Now for you guys with the 5th wheel or gooseneck trailers don't even bash this post because that is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT handling experience (fo the better) with ANY truck, i am talking added tongue/hitch weight. I wish level kits didn't affect pulling (heavy) hitch trailers with 4x4 1/2 ton trucks but in my experience they do and ALOT more than a 3/4 or 1 ton. All manufacturers lie on their #'s but i think Ram really streches theirs at least on mpg. Get your 3/4 or 1 ton, sacrifice the ride quality but have what you need

@@sorta_stock Thanks, i might check it out, truck will be paid for in a few months. You should be able to get a good price for your truck as i was looking at used 1st and when i considered the cost of used with high mileage and unknown maintenance records which i am fussy about i just bought a new one. I got mine for $42,800 with plenty of useful options like tow pack which includes 355 gears [for the V-6], power and heated rear window, power driver's seat and full-length console, fog lights, tow hooks, full sized spare and other things, list was $52,000. It just hit 500 miles and on the 2nd fill up i got 16.8 MPG mixed so not complaining though the HEMI is supposed to get the same mileage or close but it was on the lot and buyers take whats available. My truck will have an easy life without towing, yes i like power from time to time so maybe in the future i will get a Big Horn HEMI and the 392 gears? Higher tier trucks now are far from cheap, easy to spend 65-70 grand on a loaded RAM, a Tacoma costs as much as i paid for mine and it has the 6 ft 4 bed because mine is the quad cab so i am more than happy with mine.

Two things you didn't mention - the gear ratio (you did say it was like Rebel, so I am assuming you have 3.92) and Fuel tank size. I am in process of buying one with 3.21 and I am going to go for 33 Gallons tank. 26 gallon is also an option, but what is surprising is that most 2023 Ram with 5.7 were ordered with 23 gallon tanks by dealer, at least in my area.

All kinds of emission controls on them and they do not get the same fuel milage and are very unreliable because if any of the emission control equipment fails that causes issues with engine. Very expensive to fix and the dealerships are full of them being repaired so it takes forever.

The EPA rating is kinda full of shit still. They don't factor in tires. Those tires hurt you more than you think. Not only is the tread more drag, but there is more mass as well. Is your speedo still accurate after that? Most trip computers MPG are not that accurate. Then the suspension stuff you did, doesn't help either. Those 5.9 cummins only get 15mpg empty. Step dad's '22 Silverado 1500 5.3 2wd crew short got 15mpg going 80mph on a road trip. Gas tank was 24-26gallons. As someone who tows with a car (Coil suspension) I got a lot less shudder from the trailer when I added airbags. I think all rams and the Raptor have coils in the rear and it makes them horrible for towing. Around '18 my bosses got the new ram 1500. 4x4, 5.7. One was complaining how it didn't tow good compared to his old f150. ('13?)
