With the amount of fuel you lose at-open, you may want to stop overfilling quite some much since you're ending up with the same volume of usable fuel regardless.
@pierauspitz3 жыл бұрын
and it would also help preserving the gaskets as it would not be permanently bathed in fuel (as he said), and it would not subject the can 's seams to undue strains when temperature/air pressure changes, and avoid glugging when pouring the fuel (or spill through the vent hole of the spout), and also allow the can to float when full (I know, a minor thing, but it is as they were designed to do). There are many good reasons why there is a line embossed on the sides, respect the manufacturer's recommendations, in the case of Valpro, they are doing this longer than most of us are alive ;) ...

Awesome video! A month ago I just purchased 1 Wavian can a 2 GELG Jerry cans and put 5 gallons of gasoline in each and treated with Sta-Bil to use during power outages to run a generator. I’m figuring every 6 mos to a year I’ll rotate, I’m also planning on purchasing some extra rubber seals on Amazon.
@vhateverlie2 жыл бұрын
Jerry Cans do not have external vents like the plastic ones. The 5 gal fill line on the side is designed to allow the remaining free space to be used to absorb the pressure of the gas/ liquid expansion with temperature. When you overfill those all you're doing is stressing the welds, cap, and gasket for about 20 extra cents of fuel. Probably not worth is long term...
@tainosavage21692 жыл бұрын
But if you don't fill the can fully, you allow air to get in and cause moisture(water) right??..I was told to fill mine to the top regardless.

@@tainosavage2169 The small amount of water vapor in the small amount of air you leave in the jerry can would not drastically affect the gasoline's usability as long as you use fuel stabilizer, nevermind it that it would actually rust the interior of a coated NATO can. @@tainosavage2169 To fill one of these "to the top" (which you _do not_ want to do) one would have to tilt the can back deliberately. They are designed to have air space remaining beyond the maximum fill if level.

@numberwhite70822 жыл бұрын
Another way to prevent mass spillage is to leave the can in the sun with the gasoline inside to heat it up, then open it 1 last time before storing, that way when you open it it's always gonna be negative pressure unless you open it while it's just as hot as when you put it in.
@thbigshot1012 жыл бұрын
Thats not how it works. All ur doing is making ur gas evaporate making the can pressurized and when u open it ur releasing pressure. theres no way to get negative pressure, or vacuum in the can unless you have a spacial vacuum pump and a cap that you plan on leaving on the the can without using the cap that comes with the can. all ur doing with ur method is losing a small amount of gas for virtually no gain. its pointless.
@Dood_3 ай бұрын
@@thbigshot101I think he meant in the sun the gasoline heats up and expands, and when sealed and cooled it contracts a little bit resulting in a bit lower pressure inside than outside
@thbigshot1013 ай бұрын
@Dood_ If it's a closed system which OP implies, then cooling the gas can will lower the pressure. No reason to heat it and then cool it. The pressure will stay the same when cooling down after it being heated up and expanded.

@Chris What are you doing exactly with the Gas when you are preparing it for long term storage? Diesel has a self life for about 3 months and petrol about 6 months. Are you adding any bakteria to it or something else? I have heard that some people used Argon gas to fill the top of the can, so that the oxigen gets out and there is no further oxidation.

For the last 5 years, I have stored 5 cans of gasoline/petrol in case of emergency. I use Fuel stabilizer that extends the life of the petrol up to 1 year. Due to the EPA U. S. Government agency, Gelg USA has to say that these fuel cans are not for sale as fuel containers. The EPA requires those horrible fuel spouts that self lock in order to comply. It appears that filling the gas can to the point where the gasket in the cap is in continuous contact with gasoline is detrimental to the seal. If the gas can is stored on its side and that seal fails, it could spill a gallon of gas onto the floor of your building. A gallon of gas turned to fumes with exactly the right amount of air mixed with it is equal to 144 sticks of low level dynamite. Most gasoline Vapor explosions are not perfectly mixed that way but even a small gasoline explosion and fire is a serious danger to people and everything else around. It appears that finding a way to store Jerry cans in an upright position and not over feeling them is an important safety Factor. PS. Thinking about the gaskets on the Jerry cans it's probably the alcohol we are forced to add to our gas that is damaging the gasket material. Latest estimate one gallon of gasoline turn to Vapor is equal to approximately 83 sticks of dynamite. Apparently our new improved gasoline has been improved to the point where it has significantly less power.

Sources for real NATO metal jerry cans: wavianusa.com/ deutscheoptik.com/ simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p20069937/FCG20-Metal-Fuel-Can-20L-Green/product_info.html?backstep=1 The DO cans only come in OD green and the Simply Bearings cans only come in black while you can get Wavians in other colors, e.g. yellow for diesel, to keep things organized. They also have flexible steel and plastic spouts, spare gaskets and spare lock pins. While one spout can be used on all the cans, if storing diesel, kerosene or other substances, recommend a separate spout for each fuel type. These come in different colors also. Deutsche Optik cans are ~55% the price of Wavians, but are currently out of stock. You can create a wishlist and get notified when back in stock, ETA September. Although located in Great Britain your net cost for the SImply Bearings cans can be ~1/2 that of the Wavians if you by 4 or more, including shipping. And they're currently in stock and shipping. I have no idea why Wavians are so much more expensive, other than that they can get folks to pay it. Best to store cans upright. There is a fill line above the "20L" on the side of the cans. Best not to fill above or too much below that line for optimal performance - minimizes the spewing gas problem when opening and minimizes air over the gas to better prolong life. Bottom of can is at greatest risk of rust and corrosion with Ethanol laced fuel because it is hygroscopic and Eth-water mix partitions out over time, settling to bottom. However these cans are well lined to prevent rust and corrosion on inside. Outside of bottom is at risk from external moisture, scratches, dings and dents. One KZbinr applied a coat of FlexSeal on and around the bottom, but I have no personal experience with that, how to prepare the surface, etc. I place metal cans on two parallel 2x4s to elevate off concrete, promote air circulation and minimize moisture. If paying a premium price for a functional essential product, need to take care of it. I agree that it may be the ethanol that is mucking up the gaskets. High octane ethanol free gas is preferred for storage and for small engines, but does cost more and isn't available everywhere. Here is a website that may help you find ethanol-free gas near you: www.pure-gas.org/ I wonder if applying a small coating of lithium grease, vaseline, silicone spray or something else would protect the gaskets, have no effect or make the situation worse? There are over a dozen fuel stabilizers on the market. Solid well designed research on which, if any, might work the best, or for that matter, at all, is sorely lacking. KZbin channel Project Farm has done some work looking at several additives with respect to preventing or ameliorating effects of E10/water, and claims the additives clean the engine. However I know of no rigorous product evaluation of long term (>= 2 years) gasoline quality preservation of E10 or Eth free gas. There are as many anecdotal reports of Sta- Bil working as there are that it has gummed up carburetors for example. Others make similar claims for SeaFoam, Pri-G, Iso-HEET, Marine Sta-Bil, Lucas products and so forth. I have also seen numerous anecdotal reports of folks siphoning years-old gas out of junked vehicles and having it work well, and others where it didn't. So lots of conflicting info. The additives aren't cheap, especially over years of use. If anyone knows of any unbiased, rigorously designed scientific study specifically studying the ability of these or any other product to stabilize and preserve gasoline, please share it. Hope this info is helpful to someone. ATB! John
