I have 8 GELG cans that I have been using for gasoline storage. Pretty good quality and I would definitely buy more if needed. So far they have been stored for 1 1/2 years with treated non-ethanol gasoline. No leaks at this point. I will start rotating the gasoline at the two year mark (September) and I'll get to see how the insides are holding up. In the very near future I am going to purchase 4 more GELG's regardless. One thing that I noticed is that my GELG cans have the same locking pin system as the Wavian shown in this video.

All of my 8 cans are WWII German surplus and they have little megal swappable tags that sit stacked in a little window frame to identify the contents. And of course the wording is all in German. Te best one are the food containers that the whole top comes off and there is a removable rectanglee bucket setting inside the internally insulated can. I use mine in my carrier at the back of my truck to carry my canned drinks in, with ice poured in on top.

@@CurtisDrew1 My surplus cans have the tags, purchased from Sportsman's Guide and / or Cheaper Than Dirt about a quarter century ago. Mostly 1980s German made, one a 1944 Brit. Every time I'd get an SG catalog I'd rifle through it immediately to see if they had the 'half cans' (10 liter) or the coveted West German mess kits and every time I'd see them listed I'd jump straight on the phone to find them sold out. Similar experience with the porcelain lined French wine cans.

I screwed up and bought multiple cheap gas cans (likely Chinese but don't know for certain) for emergency fuel storage. My buddy took me out on his boat to go crabbing, and to be a nice guy I filled one up with non-ethanol gas and gave it to him. He put it in the shed that is attached to his 2nd home, a beach house. Then he went home and forgot about it. Next time he came back, it had leaked all 5 gallons of gas over his floor. One single spark and it would have blown up the place. The smell really hasn't gone away either. Wavian only for me now. I suspect that the expansion caused a weld on the bottom to break and leak.

Harbor freight sells The civilian version for about half the price. It has a plastic cap. I think you can get a aluminum one with a magnet for them on the internet. I've got 4, no leaks. These cans are not as heavy duty as the old US military has cans. I've got several of those and they are noticeably heavier and thicker.

Great review. Not shocked the Chinese one is crap. Even the "expensive" examples are of variable quality and their liner's the same(a friend of mine has made this mistake more than once). Plus I try to avoid buying Chinese anyway and did so before this virus nonsense. Joke is I have an original WW2 German Jerrycan from 1942 and it's still leak free, not rusty, the welds are fine(and recessed as per the original design) and the liner is as glossy as the day it was made. I've only replaced the rubber seal in the cap. Just goes to show good quality well looked after can last a lifetime. Like anything buy the best quality and you won't lose money in the long term. In your line up it would be the Wavian for me, though I'd also look at NATO army surplus too(though that's easier in Europe where I am).

I have surplus German made NATO 'Gerry cans' of the same vintage that I bought from Cheaper Than Dirt about a quarter century ago for off road use (Willys Jeeps) and still use them. My 1944 dated British made 'Gerry' finally rusted through on the side, would likely take a simple fix with JB weld (2 part epoxy with powdered metal).

when done right can be welded. if just rusted inside. pour in a pound or so of 1/4inch size nuts and bolts, as well as washers. wrap in pillows and heavy blankets, quilts, etc. place in the dryer on tumble for a couple hrs. rust will be gone no chem needed. clean out on a hot day to dry the inside real good. then pour in a gasoline proof coating to stop any more rust.

@@larryjanson4011 Your tumble polishing / cleaning idea is sound. I do the same with a rock tumbler and walnut shell for cartridge casings and used larger tumblers with steel shot or custom 'tumbling media' (cones of abrasive laced plastic) to finish bronze parts which I had wax cast for architectural restoration decades ago. Ivory Snow (flakes) laundry detergent worked very well with the bronze and with sterling silver jewelry. I wonder if clean sand or glass media would work well on steel cans with the method you've suggested?

Good stuff. I do want to say you misidentified the Chinese spot welds as tacs, and did the opposite with the GELG can, which are tacs or short runs, not spot welds. The problem with the cotter pin on the GELG can is not so much that you'll lose it but that cotter pins are a pain in the neck to fiddle around with if you're fixing to actually use the can with any regularity. Also those flexible spouts are no good, they tear away at the base after minimal use and I have had them with the breather hole drilled on the wrong side. Which forces me to maneuver a 20kg+ can on its side and raised over or level with my shoulder to fill a car, generator, excavator, etc.

Does the Gelg or Wavian have a lip or indentation along the edge on the bottom? The rack on my Jeep is designed in such a way that requires this to properly secure the cans. I'm getting the feeling I may need to make some modifications to it. Great job on the very objective comparison, thank you.

Thank you for sharing. Your comparison and information are valid, and almost true. I bought two cans on eBay 6 years ago, and did not know it was made in China. I paid $16 a piece at the time, and still use it today. I store it in the cool shed, and take it out to used it/ rotated it with the new one every six months. I don’t have any problem with it like you have described it. Maybe I just got lucky and very happy with my decision for the prices I paid for it. I will point out that unless I am mistaken, the original cans did have the tube vent on it. The difference between that and the China can is that it is SUPPOSED to come just a bit shy of flush with the top of the mouth so that it can't be blocked by the fuel you're pouring out. The China can has it too far in and the vent sent with it has no way to connect to that tube, as the Wavian spout does. It just has a notch cut into one side of the spout. Useless. I bought one of the Wavians and I found that there were spots where the weld bead came slightly proud of the recess and that's not good. Ideally, it is supposed to be at least a an eighth of an inch below the surface of the can. I will also say that I, too, thought the interior coating was a bit poorly done.

I just got 4 of the Gelg cans, 3 5 gallon and 1 2.6 gallon, all with a manufacturing date of 7, 2020.They all look great on the outside but they all have bare metal showing through on the inside in places. They would all need to be re-coated. The internal vents mimic my Wavian cans except for the 2.6 gallon, it just has a pipe welded inside near the top of the opening. They also all have the spring clip to lock the lids shut instead of the pin like the wavian. None of my Wavian spouts fit these cans either, they are close and almost lock on but I wouldn't trust them. Overall, they are decent cans for the money and very capable if you are willing to complete the coating inside and this may negate the cheaper price all together not to mention they don't come with spouts and your Wavian spouts won't work. Thanks for your review, it is what turned me on to these cans in the first place but it looks like their quality may be slipping. Decent cans but NOT a Wavian.

I thought I only used half but set on ground and saw a wet spot on the bottom. No wonder the shed smelled like gasoline! I did not think those welds were very trust worthy and I was right. I emptied it out and walked it aross the street. Set on the side walk outside a storage unit with a Free sign on it. Said leaks at bottom. A spot weld will fix, good luck. It was gone in 4 minutes. 2022-03--06 The Wavian cans are selling for $129 each at the link you provided! Yikes. When I was in the Army, I LOATHED the 5 gallon cans we used with the screw on threads, rusty innards, and flex spout that always had dirt in it. I never was exposed to the superior WW2 German design that is still the best.

What about the American cans, I think they are good quality as well and for home use would be fine. In the round side you do loose some volume, but for the home user it won't matter.

Both Gelg and Wavian had to meet the same requirements of NATO regulations, there are specific requirements the manufacturer has to meet to name its product compatible, so where's the fuss about the 0,1mm added thickness - try throwing a full 20 litre can, Gelg, Wavian or any other directly on concrete floor from the back of your truck- is that what you're talking about in the comments below? This product is not ment for beating, its ment for storing fuel and it does the job great - you're not driving tanks in the middle of some battlefield. Anyone imagining the're gonna escape from a bunch of zombies with their jerry cans strapped to their back is lacking common sense. Go and buy Presson for twice the price of Gelg and you'll still get more or lesss the same stuff - in case somebody paid enough effort to find out they both might just be made in the same factory in Poland, only you pay add. money for the Pressol logo:)

i dont buy wavien because there coating inside is water soluble, my job is to transport jerry cans full of water to farmers in the outback for there tractors radiators, the jerry can is what we use because in outback heat plastic jerries just melt, a real jerry should be able to take water no bother, if it cant do that, its not even worth the cost of materials

Valpro/Wavian makes the gas cans for NATO as well so they are also the real deal they have all the same reqiourments as the GELG cans and have better welds than the GELG has. You can buy the Valpro/Wavion can at Harbor Freight for $44.99. They are sold under the MidWest lable but they are made by Valpro/Wavian imported by Midwest from Valpro/Wavian. The Valpro/Valpro sold by Harbour Freight is the civilian version and has the EPA mandated plastic safety pouring spout on it. You should do more research before doing a comparison because you are wrong on the Valpro/Wavian being more exspensive.
