I absolutely love my RW moc toes! Love the lack of branding. The leather is incredible. The break in is tough, but it you earn every bit of comfort you will enjoy for years.

I am a machinist and spend a lot of time standing. The Thorogoods are the only choice between these two for me. I don’t have time for extended break-in time that are required for the Redwings; I have had a couple pair and they just never get to a completely comfortable state. The Thorogoods are also considerably lighter, which is a big plus for me. Thorogood offers a complete refurbishment for about $120 here in the US. This replaces everything except the upper and welt (unless needed on welt). Although not as comfortable as the sneaker-style safety-toe shoes from Redwing that I have also tried in the past, the Thorogoods are the best blend of comfort and durability that I have found. I recently bought a pair of Hytest boots for casual wear and really like them. They are also comfortable right out of the box. I will eventually put them in to work rotation, as well. Really good review, by the way.

I ordered my first Thorogood boots last week. I should receive them in less than 10 days. I currently use Wolverine Moc Toe which I've had for about a year and 3 months and the sole split evenly across the bottom from end to end. I noticed it last week when I sat down and looked down on my boots. Looks like it had been there for a while. Those Wolverine boots are going in the trash as soon as I get my Thorogood boots. Thanks for the review. Cheers!

Aside from the fact that your statement, (the, majority of US, The Viewers, would DISAGREE with you.), was DEAD-@SS wrong, I hold the same opinion as you towards the 875’s. I've never owned a pair of boots that resembled the 875 heritage, then again never wanted to. I am glad that you shared your comparative video and listed a pros and cons of both pairs. I am currently on my second pair, had I listened to the Red wing Saleswoman, strongly suggesting I go 1 whole size down from my normal size, UNDOUBTEDLY, I'd still be wearing the very 1st pair purchased, August 2013. I love my 875s! I SUBSCRIBED to your channel when you mentioned pen knives; I 💜 both, as well as collecting, restoring and using vintage Straight Razors.😂 I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of your content, great work!

My meta guard 4499's are the best boots I've owned. No break in period and my feet don't hurt at the end of the day after 14 hours. Before that style I had the irish setter slip ons doing oilfield completions. Those boots lasted 2 years in drilling mud, various chemicals, snow, caliche rock and hot summer days. Been doing this for 10 years and I've never seen a person with thorough good boots on a well site.

I've still never really had a problem with breaking in boots. My Iron Rangers and Beckmans were both a little uncomfortable at first but broke in well. This is a great review. Thanks Devin. I own the 875s and bought a pair of Thorogoods in January. I liked them but actually found them uncomfortable, in the same size. I think, if I would have sized up, I would have liked them more but the fit and comfort just wasn't there. I still plan on buying another pair in the correct size at some point. Could always use some beaters to contrast my nicer boots.

I wore 875's for almost 20 years, a new pair every year. The 814-4200 Thorogoods are so much more comfortable, and the sole last twice as long, and the boots cost 100.00 less then the 875's. Can't ever see myself going back to the 875's....The 4200's are the most comfortable boot I ever worn...and right from the start.

Great video once again. I’ve been wearing the Thorogood in the black moc steel toe as a work boot for about a year. I love them for the price. I clean and oil them every other month or so. I do agree with the porous sole. I wish it was easier to clean and stay clean. But no issues with leather for me. Spot on man. I do think i will also buy a new pair Vs resole. (If I was to resole here in the us they do offer it. I would go with the black version sole on the black leather.) the white looks great but not for long. I have redwings but not as workbooks, for me the leather gets pretty abused so hate to bring really pricey boots to work.

Interesting review. I think a few main point has been overlooked. Those are different styles of soles...a wedge boot will be more supportive (and seem comfortable). The second missed point is that these were designed to be work boots. I have both redwing boot and thorogood boots. Love both brands I purchased them for different types of duty. All in all I would always lean towards purchasing a union made product...perhaps the people employed are treated better and have all the proper training to make a premium product that will last.

Thorogood do offer factory resoles in the US. In the UK you would send them to Original Cobblers in Orpington who do all of the Redwing approved resoles for the London store. They can resole the Thorogoods in any number of Crepe type sole but the best person to send them to is Schugott Custom Repair. He’s incredible. Welted sole specialist with Redwing, Throrogood, Irish Setter etc. He can resole in any of the available Vibram crepe sole alternatives to the Christy sole which are way better than the Christy sole and he adheres the soles WAY better than the factory do. Those Redwings will last you 20-30 years. The Thorogood is a quality, quality boot. I have both. Love them both.

I’ve been wearing Redwing 2406 boots for the past twenty or so years. I’m due for a new pair and unfortunately they were out of stock everywhere. So I thought I would give this style of boot a try, who knows maybe I’ll like it better? One thing that is not mentioned in the video and I didn’t see in the comments is that the redwings have no option for a safety cap toe and no shank. These are two items that make a work boot a work boot, safety toe for OSHA compliance and a shank for support. If you spend any time on ladders the shank is essential!

I've had my Red Wings for 10 and 7 years, and I wear them hard. I've has 4 soles on the 10 year pair and 3 on the 7 year pair but the uppers are still in excellent nick. I would be disappointed if a pair of 280 quid boots only lasted 3 years! I reckon I have at least another 10 years left on both (with re-soles). I love my Thorogoods too, now 3 years old and still on the original sole, which is handy as I'm not sure where I can get them re-soled in the UK, and it will be expensive to send them off to the US, probably cheaper to buy another pair which is a false economy when Red Wings are easily re-soled. The TG's were more comfortable from the off, they have kept their shape on the toe and the heel is still as good as new, but I personally think Red Wings are a better long term investment.

Currently i switch between my solovair burgundy rub derby boots, and Doc Marten wellington boots. You have good taste, sir. thanks for the videos.
@RevJamesCostello6 жыл бұрын
I bought a pair of Red Wing (I think 8138) nearly 6 months back. I think I was influenced by your videos. I don’t mind the break in period at all. If you are a serious walker and don’t mind a bit of pain, they’re all good after a week or two. The Rannoch by Hoggs of Fife was much tougher to break in, but once they were - boom, top notch boots. After owning the Red Wing for a month, I decided I wasn’t a fan of the moc toe or the white rubber sole. I much prefer the classic round boot and good old dark rubber sole, whether that be a Dainite or ‘commando’ style. So I gave them to my dad, who likes them a lot. However, he does get annoyed with the white sole getting dirty along the sides. They have to be scrubbed with a scrubbing brush and soapy water. When it comes to cleaning the upper, I find a once over with a cloth will do. Then let it dry. I tried adding a thin layer of neutral polish to them, which I found worked an absolute charm. Would you consider Tricker’s? They always have them at a reduced price somewhere. Whether it be their ‘Outlet’ website or various sites that stock them. Check out Flannels for example. Type in ’Tricker’s’ in the search engine. I recently purchased some of their shoes and boots in kudu. Pleased up to now. :-)

On my feet 14 hrs a day and my thorogoods have outlasted my red wings by a good margin. The soles (and stitching) on my 877s are pretty much gone, but my thorogoods have barely worn at all, and Ive worn the thorogoods twice as many times just because they are the more comfortable boot. I like red wings leather patina and their laces are the best but the thorogoods are much more comfortable and actually surprisingly durable for being so easy to wear. Thorogood also offers more specific sizing options than red wing and they are $100 less. Red wings are basically fashion boots to me now because they pretty much fail as a legit long term work boot
@joesan35976 жыл бұрын
As usual, very nice video and I'm glad that you liked the Red Wing better than the other one. I guess the 875 will last for decades and not just 3, 4 or 5 years like you say. May be you were referring to the resole which probably has to be done every 3 years and especially with the crepe sole chances are very high that you have to resole them, but the leather as such is made to last forever!
@reedgerber36855 жыл бұрын

I had a pair of Red Wing 606's with the super sole and they lasted me 5 years working in Hospital maintenance as an electrician, boiler operator, etc. and I walk on concrete pretty much all day. The only problem I had was the way the heel is designed. It had that heel line that ran through my arch and gave me planters fasciitis so I switched to the Irish Setter Ashby wedge heel and my feet were corrected so that's all I wear now. They are very comfortable and lasted 2 years. I'm wearing the USA Georgia boot wedge heel now but I don't care for them too much, I think their over priced for the craftsmanship. I'm going to try the Thorogood or Red Wing Moc toe next. Hopefully these Georgia boots wear out rather quickly. I cant justify spending $250 on these just to let them sit in the closet.
@cop70s5 жыл бұрын
Thorogoods with a nice soft insole pretty much beat RedWings no contest. Tossed my old 875's and don't miss 'em. Soles don't last and the break in is a pain. Thorogood soles last much longer, even if the stitching fails, and they are more way more comfortable. RW's have better laces though.
@-tu1lj5 жыл бұрын
Switched from Red Wing to Thorogood a few years back and never looked back. I'll take the comfort over the longevity any day. It's not like we're talking a huge difference in longevity. I've had my last Thorogoods for going on 2 years and the leather still is in great condition. I'll be looking for a re-sole soon. Regardless of the two, I'd normally buy new boots after about 2-3 years anyway. Red Wings just take too long to break in and even then, the sole is just not as comfortable for me. Just my opinion. But cheaper and more comfortable, that's a win win for me.

Ive had 8 pairs of moc toe thorogoods in either 6”or 8” through the years for work. I pick them over the rw’s everytime. My feet just cant handle the lack of cushion in the 875’s. Being on concrete and weighing 250lbs just doesnt work. They are nice boots though. Love my thorogoods. The Red Wings imo at this point are for casual or very light duty use. Also the i fee the RW leather with last longer than the Thorogoods. They use an almost glove like leather. I also think people get too caught up in Sizing down in their wings. Yes they run long. But the break in and initial fitting should not be painful. Hot spot and some light blisters here and there if you wear them too long, ok. But i really feel people are down sizing too much and blasting their feet for no reason. I only go down half size, and yea they might be ever so slightly big on me, but nothing a heavy sock or the seperate leather footbeds red wing makes for the heritage line cant fix completely.

which boots? neither have foam mid-sole though. I doubt many boots do. Do you mean footbed? in that case, that's normal. Buy some better in-soles. I have redwing and Chippewa, both with vibram. They get used equally now. The redwings are 2 years older bought in 2017. They've been knee deep in Snow shoveling, carpentry contract work and I cut trees down on my farm 3-4 months a year. Soles look brand new. How the hell are you guys wearing out vibram soles?!? I'm a 200lb man working the shit out of these boots and they are nearly as nice as when I bought them. Concrete walking, been soaking wet for days. Climbing over tree trunks. Wtf

The thing the US folks aren't getting in this review is that you'll never see these type of boots in construction in the UK. We wear a different type of safety boot, metal shank for nails, steel toe, gore tex etc. I understand why your uppers get trashed from cement and it makes more sense to buy a new pair ever year or so. So mostly these are worn as a casual wear boot over here. It's a bit like carharrt is workwear in the states and a fashion brand here. I do like that Americans have a focus on buying USA made work boots, so at least someone is getting a decent wage. That's something I think UK folks could learn from.

what is the typical work boot in the uk/europe?

northseaworkwear.com/st720-cofra-hurricane-waterproof-breathable-heat-resistant-s3-gore-tex-safety-boot.html I have a pair like this. Most work sites insist on steel toe capped boots and a steel shank to stop nails up through sole as H&s ppe. Gore tex so not sweaty, but waterproof. Very little break in, bin job when busted.

I have to say that my Thorogood moc boots where the most comfortable boot ive ever owned by a mile. Ive gotten about a year 1/2 with commercial plumbing work and my only gripe is how the toe box breaks down. Pieces of plastic from the toe box had a tendency to poke my toes. Regardless it is an exceptional boot, the only reason I didn’t purchase another pair was because they where sold out of my size. I just bought a pair of danner quarry and really miss the Thorogood comfort.

Why are you comparing redwing vibram vrs. Thorogood crepe not a good and fair comparison. Maybe redwing 875 would be a better comparison.

I found my red wings super comfortable on day one... maybe it's because I bought the insert they make.

I'm a RW supersole 2.0 kind of guy I love these boots very comfortable. I climb poles and one of my buddies ripped a chunk of his thorogood's heel from climbing. The heel on my supersole 2 held up much better than i thought it would. I'm sure thorogoods are great but not for climbing power poles I think.

If the Red Wings are Nero go with a wide toe and depend on the type of job you’re gonna do I am a truck driver I do not use neither one of those no steel toe required but I do wear red Wings

Not comfortable at all, got blisters first week after switching to this style hoping they would be better but. I was wrong" the lack of the inside liner makes a big comfort difference, not worth the price, very hard boots not flexible enough for me, wouldn't recommend for all day comfort

I wish I got my Thorogoods 1/2 size smaller. Cobbler said he can stop the heel slipping by sewing in a piece of leather at the heel. Normally a 10, should of got 9 1/2!

Thorogoods for me. Haven't tried the redwings. Thorogoods fit and are comfortable, just take care of the leather and enjoy.

I have worn both brands over the years and to put it simply, Thorogood are buy once wear them out then toss them out and Red Wings are buy once wear out the sole and resole as necessary and keep for a long time. What any of this really comes down to is how well you care for your boots. That means regular cleaning and conditioning. Thorogood are good and I like that they are Union made but the Red Wings are better made with better quality material other than the wedge sole. When the sole wears out on the Red Wings, have them re-soled with a Vibram wedge sole, it is much better and will last longer. Also the Red Wing 875's are the basic moc toe boots and are supposed to fit snug and as they break in they become molded to your foot and very comfortable.; Next time try the Red Wing 1907's, they are made a little roomier and have a removable inner foot bed that you can change out for one of those cushion inserts if that is what you need.

Just had my Pecos Red Wings resoled after 4 years, with the firefighter Vibram soles, locally, for $80. Not cheap, but the particular soles I chose were a $20 upcharge.

15 years in on a pair of Red Wings: don’t remember a bad break-in, but I have a serious bunion on the outside my right big toe and, at this point, the outside of the boot has a large bulge where the boot leather has shaped around the injury. That and the15 year with one resole sells me. There are better boots out there, but they cost $600 a pair.

I'm writing this for the people who are trying to decide which boot to get. There is one piece of information in this video that is incorrect. The Thorogood boots have a goodyear welt. The top row of stitches on the welt are just for show. That's important because it's easier to find someone to resole them. Hope this helps.

You could just as easy buy a padded insole for the Red Wing boots.. and they would be just as quick to "break in".
