20,000 watt Amp Banned from Competitions? 2000 Harrison Labs Drag Queen [4K]

To clarify some stuff very late in the game... The amp was banned because it is not a conventional amplifier. It is a "digital" waveform. Basically, it applies the battery bank directly to the speakers, chopped by the hertz rate. So you get an EXTREMELY square, clipped waveform. Normal amps use filtering and inductors. They try to create a perfect copy of the input signal, which is a sine wave. Imagine a smooth wiggle. This amp produces a square wave, the output is full bank voltage or off, nothing in between. Imagine violently banging back and forth at the same frequency as hard and violently as possible. Like a switch vs a dimmer. It works as a very crude, constant amplitude PWM output amp. Tons of distortion, super high efficiency. Hook a 75 volt battery bank to a switch, wire it to your subs and blink it on and off at 35hz. That would be what this amp does.

So for the people that don’t understand what it is this is it in simplified.. it’s a giant push/pull mosfet switch, not an amp. It puts out more or less a square wave based on an input signal, and the mosfets directly dump current from the battery bank to the subwoofers. And with that, 99% of what makes an amp an amp isn’t needed here, just a shit ton of mosfets in parallel in a push/pull configuration. Yes it will for sure do 20KW at a low enough impedance (that’s a LOTTTT of mosfets), and the efficiency is practically 100%. If someone built this with that number of TO-220 pack mosfets from today, they could probably make it do 50kw+. It’s just a switch. It’s easy to build something this powerful that functions this way

Yeah based on the output voltage, its not like most half bridges you see.... there is voltage potential on each output or else you have to divide the output by two when taking 72v squared... in the manual here it says voltage squared divided by impedance.... not voltage squared divided by two and then divided by impedance (like half bridge amps where negative is ground). So its like a full bridge amp.. but a very weird one.

It is nearly a crime to not get this functional and on the amp dyno! This thing is a very unique classic. I remember hearing about these and seeing photos, but would love to see one in operation / dyno tested, bet only a handful of people have ever seen one of these in action.

Would be cool to see the power it was putting out even with clipping; yeah it may be clipped power, but still power, even if not at rated impedance's. I mean this amp was banned from competition, and I'd guess hardly anyone has actually seen one of these running since they are pretty rare, so to get to see it actually function / power some subs would be a rare occurrence, even if power measurements are not exactly spot on, just cool to see all around.

Actually there are similar working amps in production: Taramps, Stetsom and other brazilian brands produce High Voltage amplifiers, we are about to make the first HV system in México with a Taramps HV 160k and 24 12v batteries in series to get 300 volts DC in the voltage rails. This amp uses welding machine transistors to cope with the power handling, not too much audio quality but they work to make crazy systems like the "carreta treme treme" and other brazilian monsters without spending thousands in heavy gauge wiring and high output alternators, just buying multiple cheap flooded or sealed batteries and 4 awg wire (higher voltage equals less current to make the same power, so you dont need big wires to connect the amplifier).

This is by far your most interesting find yet Big D! This was an obvious assault on db competitions since it is useless for music. I can see Harrison’s argument if non drivable or unregistered vehicles are used in competition. I wonder what the regular audio amplifiers were like and if these competition amps helped sell any of them.

Don't bother testing it. It merely puts out a square wave at the fundamental frequency of the bass. It merely uses a comparator, which switches the polarity of the battery pack to the speaker at the zero crossing of the audio signal, hence, no input level control. It was banned, because it isn't even an amplifier per se. It is just a high power switch box, thus, the sanctioning bodies don't consider this to be an "amplifier".

I believe that would be 60 amp slow blow with a maximum of 200 amps each. So, if you exceed 60 amps for a certain amount of time (depending on what you buy) it would not blow right away. But regardless of what you buy, it should blow immediately at 200 amps. Thus, if you draw 150 amps for 300 milliseconds, the fuse (again, depending on what fuse you buy) should not blow. But drawing 150 amps for 2 seconds probably should blow the fuse before the charging circuit burns up. But the fuses shown do not look like slow blow fuses. "only made five of them", So we're looking at a serious collectors item. I don't know what "class HL" means, but a quick lookup at class H amps explains the minimal design a lot. Basically, this amp was never designed for regular use. You would need HUGE external batteries hooked up to the internals to power this thing for any appreciable length of time. It was designed to take 1 or 2 hours to charge up and then 10 or 15 minutes to drain the batteries. I'm no expert in SPL competitions, but I can guess they banned the whole concept of batteries feeding class H amps. Because all you have to do is keep adding batteries in series and output Xsistors in parallel, and you can pump that up to no limits -- a half million watts if you have the money. And the whole of it would get no more complicated than what you've already seen.

Theres a CAP BANK for this amp that DUMPS A LIGHTNING BOLT in 30 seconds ..... that was the MAX run time specified by the design and Events of them times so it was primarily designed to do exactly that. 30 second run... max output.... Battery packs gave ya less output but a longer run time is all.... CAP BANK was the FIRE..... Lightning in a BOX.... BOOM!!!!!

HVAC (sheet metal) is typically 20-28 gauge galvanized steel sheet metal held together with slips and drives. Nothing like this box. FYI! It does have the appearance of being made in a "low tech" small shop with a small Pexto brake. It would be interesting to see a scoped output at load. ;)

The numbers are interesting, I think it's worth getting one of these things working to see what it really does! Whether it meets specs in the real world will depend in part on the actual battery voltage during testing, whether it's 12V or more like 13.5 or 14V. At 6:52 the 6-battery specs read 20kW max power at .25 ohm and 10kW RMS at .5 ohm. Assuming 12V, and if we ignore that batteries have internal resistance and pretend they maintain voltage under any load, ignore that fuses have resistance, ignore that the output devices have resistance, etc.. If you ignore those things, then six "12V" batteries in series gives you 72V rail voltage. They must tap from the center to get + and - rails. With a 0.25 ohm load that gives you a max instantaneous (peak) output of 20,736 watts, and assuming a sine wave you get max RMS output of 14,662 watts. At 1/2 ohm they claim 10kW RMS, which only works out with a square wave, sine wave RMS would be 7331W. Throw in all those realities that we ignored earlier and the real world numbers will be a chunk lower, ALTHOUGH if they are charging the batteries up to 13.5-14V then that makes a very significant difference and can make up for much of the losses we ignored earlier. Overall it's a creative way to get what was probably still a lot of power for the era, without having to build a power supply stage, and it would be interesting to see what it does in a real world test.

The supply from the car alternator is largely irrelevant. All that supply does, is charge the 72 volt array of AGM batteries, which, under load, probably sag to about 50~55 volts. A 50 volt square wave will put exactly 10,000 watts into a .25 Ohm load. The only thing that keeps the MOSFETS (if that's what they are) from cooking, is the fact that they clip. It's basically a square wave, deeply clipped signal. The heatsinks are not massive enough to dissipate the ~4,000 watts of heat, if it was indeed 10,000 watts of pure sine wave output to the speakers. It specifies, that it can sustain this for about 30 seconds, which is all you will get out of a lead acid battery that size, before it simply runs down. The heatsink just doesn't have enough area, nor the mass, for 30 seconds of sine wave. If the batteries were so stiff, that they could maintain their full 72 volts under that horrendous load, the amp would indeed produce exactly 10,000 watts RMS sine into a .25 Ohm load. That requires 200 amps into the speaker, if that was a sine wave, the current would crest at 282.8 amps peak, for 200 amps RMS. It truly needs the four 60 amp fuses in parallel,(240 amps)on the output. To avoid the need for the center tap on the batteries, the amplifier is a full H bridge design, allowing full battery voltage to be applied to the speakers in either polarity. No center tap necessary, otherwise, the amplifier would only produce 1/4 that wattage into the .25 Ohm load.(2,500 watts)

If I’m not mistaken, I think the batteries were linked up to make 48 volts DC then that was converted to AC volts. These amps were not meant to be played for music. I think they only play about 3 to 4 frequencies so you had to build a box that would be tuned to what the amp could produce. Very efficient and powerful.

Stan was way ahead of the game, producing basically "digital" amps back in 2000. I used 4 of his "150w rated" and *almost exited my L7 cones from their baskets* before the amps blew from over-current draw due to limited battery and no over-current/low voltage draw protect circuit in the amps. They hit like 1000w+ each, and had a real strong "Hard" hit to them. A little while after that I ran a pair of Zapco 9.0s in their "4K" and it wasn't any stronger than Stan Harrison's four 150w amps that were each the size of a Soundstream Class A 50. That "Drag Queen" appears to be the same one Stan sent me to test in 2001 when I competed in Highlands, CA. Unfortunately one half was already blown when I tested it in competition, but it still hit a 148.5 with only 1/2 of it running at 4ohms on two D4 L7 12".

Watching you test amps that were built in the early 2000s makes me feel ancient. When I first had a big system installed in my car. It was 1986 and I used Alpine amps . 1 x3528 a pair of 3531s each pushing an Alpine 10 pro . I think I used a pair of coaxial 5.5s or 6.5s in the doors and a pair of Polk audio 3x5, plates in the back. .I had to build my own sub box , because at that time, the regions biggest audio retailer didn't even build them. .

The amperage is also in conjunction with 72 volts not 12 not 14 .2 but 72 volts. That is 28,800 Watts. (Not sure his machine can even test 72 volts) but yeah this baby probably does pumped out some power. The internals can be smaller because it's not having to transform the power. Imagine what it could have done with much larger capacitors though. Perhaps some extremely large external farad's. Looks like the 4 x 60A fuses are connected in parallel. Therefore they could cope with 240A total on the incoming cable. This would be what the 200A max refers to. Total of 200A being drawn spread evenly across the 4 fuses.

@@juliancox4178 The catch is that no four fuses are ever perfectly identical in resistance and few fuse blocks are absolutely identical in resistance to all fuse positions, so you never really share those loads equally among all four fuses. Eventually the weaker of the four fuses blows first and the rest of the fuses then follow very soon thereafter (especially if the fuses are already running fairly hot). So, in multi-ganged fuses one does typically aim for a total rating a bit above the target limit if one wishes to ensure that the full target current limit is always available reliably and that only faults actually blow the fuses as every fuse failure is going to set you back 4 fuses (in this instance) since all will fail very quickly in domino fashion.

Cool product but I think most people would stop short of calling it a car audio amplifier. It is an amplifier yes, but amplifiers are used in alot of products in some form wether we realize it or not. This unholy beast would be cool for a demo vehicle or something like that but it doesn't belong anywhere near a legit car audio system, competition or not. They were right to outlaw it. Everyone is asking for a dyno test but I think the overview you provided here is great and is plenty of info for us. Thanks big D and thanks to the fella who let you film it :)

Because being designed for CAR audio sound competitions they were very specific about the power supplies and had to be powered only from the vehicles charging circuit.Any other power supplies or being disconnected from the car's alternator by hidden relays or circuit breakers were deemed illegal by the sanctioning bodies.This was in the early days of IASCA sound offs though and has probably changed by now as SPL was just a novelty back then.

It's not a musical amplifier, it's a square wave generator. In addition to being illegal by virtue of its internal batteries, amplifiers for SPL competitions have to be able to play music, not just square waves. If square waves and high voltage batteries were allowed any old bloke could hook up a few IRFB4110 FETS, a gate driver, and a 555 timer and have a really really loud system. Trouble is, it could never play any sort of music, just a really loud buzz.

Looking from the front, the small board on the right seems to be the driver board for the output stage that runs along the front. The calculations seem to be for peak power, RMS is usually half, but would be more if clipping (good for blowing speakers) - the formula would be correct for a square wave. From having phase 1 and phase 2, looks like probably outputting in a bridged configuration. Loads of output transistors in TO220 style packages.

6x batteries better than 4x. Any 12v car good brand battery will work. this works like any 120v/220v PA unit, they lower voltage to 50v or 72v DC to operate at high power. 6x voltage means 6x less amperage needed, and that size batteries can deliver 140-200A easy. 72volt multiplied by 140 amps equals 10080 watts. 48volt multiplied by 200 amps equals 9600 watts. 12v batteries usually stays at 14v charged but voltage drop exist too. You can use another high amp lead acid battery BMS too if stock is broken. Grab some second hand batteries and test it. Missing components could be about 1 channel mode instead of 2. Please. I get subscribed, make me proud of it. PS: the farm of 3 leg amplifiers seems to be placed in two lines near the front panel, they are in opposite direction and maybe works in cascade, one line pushes membrane out and the other one pushes the membrane inside of the speaker, the bigger the heatsink/fan the longer time you have for fun. PS2: minute 5:21. I can count 80x 3pin TO mosfets. 40 on each board, 20 in the front 20 in the back. PS3: this amp is a beast. if you feed and tune it properly it can blow indefinitely At this point you want to test it too PS4: it can work in AC but you need a 10kw 110/220v to 72v 80Ax2 toroid coil and trashcan size capacitors. So better, easyer and cheaper stay with batteries.

it drains 850A max in 12v language so you will need some beefy step up boards to charge the amp, but you also never going to use indefinitely at peak level so maybe 150-300A alternator+stepUp should work good at make ears bleed. 300A bms only for charging and balancing is cheaper too

I had a $7,000 Sony/Rockford Fosgate custom installed system in a $900 1969 VW Bug in the late 1980's-early 1990's. By todays standards it would be considered low power. The 2 12" & 2 15" subs had Power 300 on them. The 2 8" mid bass & 2 satellites had a Punch150. 2 way active crossover was set a 70hz. It was one of the top 2 or 3 systems in Ardmore, OK. The JBL system in my Prius sounds awesome today & I have all my seats. My old VW had no back seat. The 15" subs fired into the back of the front seats. Had big sealed box up to the side windows. The 12" were put in first in a sealed box in the cubby space below the rear window. It wasn't long until I had the 15" subs put in.

@@bigdogbrodavepresents6178 No. The installer noodled the "dash" between the glove box & steering wheel. My head unit was a detachable face Sony that controller a 10 disc changer that was under the front hood. Under that was a matching Sony slide out deck cassette player. Under that was the RF preamp/EQ. All mounted tight & solid. As I said, it was all custom install. Likely more than half of the expense was the labor in constructing the boxes for the subs, flush mounting all of the amps & Xo, cutting the dash, laying out all the wire & cables, & making it all look like it came that way from factory. The car itself was a resto mod before the audio system was installed. My uncle & my dad restored it & customized It for my older cousin's first car, but my dad had a old 914 he traded for It to be my first car. It was a beautiful bug. Had extra wide fiberglass fenders that looked factory. Had wide front & rear wheels & tires. Had old Ford teardrop tail lights. Had 356 head lamps. All of the interior & exterior was done. My dad died before getting a chance to fix up the engine with after market heads, cam, carbs, & a 12V conversion & before the audio system was installed. Thats how I had the money to pay for the audio system. It really needed a 12V conversion, but I was just a dumb kid. I thought the lights dimming to the beat as I cruised the drag was kinda cool but if I was going 70 or 80 mph down the road it wasn't really noticeable. I had 2 deep cycle marine batteries that powered the electronics, but the stock 6V generator would fall behind on a daily basis as I was always jamming at concert level draining more power than it could keep up with. The subwoofer amp would shut off after a few hours. Then I would have to make a recharge drive.

I'm sure I was told about how a 6V generator wasn't sufficient but it worked well at the time. I recall looking at a big Wrangler 12V alternator that had huge amperage, but by then I couldn't afford it. I'd blown every penny my dad left me by the time I was 16 or 17. Say no to drugs.

This reminds me of an idea I had as a kid when I was still doing audio stuff. Get two regular, but hefty sized alternators, like 100 to 150 amp size, rip out the regulator and then just drive the fields with the low frequency signals you want to amplify and each alternator would be one half of the output. You'd need to isolate the grounds (of at least one anyway), but you'd be able to make one hell of a lot of power. But, back in the 90's, it would have been a cheap way to make big power. Big power back then was god awful expensive. Yanking alternators out of old stuff though, you could have made one hell of a big amp for very little cash. AND, it would have been stupidly reliable as far as shorting of outputs and such. It would only be good for the lower end of course, but I suspect it would allow you to make stupid levels of output.

Try to compare it with 20,000 watts Amplifier produced in China by Filipino Engineers mostly used in Battle of the Sounds Here in Iloilo City and Cebu City for Battle of the Sound System Competition, to see is to believe because those amplifier are tested and toasting most of the Power Transformers on the lines. They call it Category 2 from the Origin of Category 1 which is 10,000 watts.

I researched the amount of amps a shorted battery will deliver. One battery will deliver 2400 amps. Now, muliply that by 6 and that equals 16,400 amps going into the speakers. I could not find the maximum amount of amps a speaker can take, but an averaged of 5 to 15 amps is what most speakers can handle. I don't know what to gather about this info except that I think this amp would blow your speakers to little pieces and the amp itself would blow up like a small atomic bomb and I would not be any where near this destructive device when it went off. What do you think will happen when you short 6 batteries?

Do not use lithium batteries on a lead acid battery charging circuit

You don't want to use Lithium Ion, but, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) are a direct replacement for lead acid. You use exactly 2 lithium Iron phosphate cells, in place of each 3 lead acid cells. The charge finishing voltage is exactly identical to lead acid. A 12 volt lithium battery (4 cells) charges to full capacity at 13.6 volts, and is safe up to 14.6 volts. Right in the range of absorbed glass mat (AGM) lead acid batteries, which this amplifier came equipped with.
