I replaced an old rockford 360.2 with the 1000w version not only does it run much cooler, but it resolved a ground loop noise coming out of the highs amp apparenty caused by the rockford. Win win.
@audiokeller1975 Жыл бұрын
You just had a defective topaz diode that avoids noise in those oldschool Rockfords 😊 they often fail, you can measure it with multimeter if your main ground has connection ( 0 ohms ) to RCA shield, a working topaz diode shows around 1000 ohms between main ground and RCA shield, it’s an easy fix 👍
@JasonWW2000 Жыл бұрын
As great as the old Rockfords are, using one on a sub is not advisable. They will run really hot and suck up a lot of amperage. Class D is where its at for subs. 👍
@audiokeller1975 Жыл бұрын
@@JasonWW2000 then you have to readjust the idle current on class ab Rockfords , most of the old Rockfords which run hot have a wrong bias setting or they are driving a load which is way to low in terms of ohms. But correct, even the oldschool class bd Rockfords stay way cooler 👍

It would be nice to have videos that test and rate the sound quality ie. THD. We always focus on the power but their has to be good, better, best for actual sound quality. I’ve heard ETON has 200w amps that boast a THD of .0001. I really don’t know what that means but it would be nice to have videos just like these but focused on quality. I’m sure the Hi-res audiophile community would appreciate it. Thanks Big D!
@Pete.across.the.street Жыл бұрын
THD alone doesn't really tell e anything about the sound quality of the amp. But that's what these tests are doing, testing how much power before distortion.
@JasonWW2000 Жыл бұрын
The big problem here is that the equipment to measure distortion levels tend to cost around 40K usd. Only the big audio companies have them. No way Big D is gonna get one. THD refers to a deviation from a perfect sign wave or the difference from the input sine wave to the output sine wave. Clipping is where the tops and bottoms of the wave start to flatten out and is a type of distortion. Sometimes the wave can be offset a little which is hard to see on an oscilloscope. So there's lots of ways a signal can be distorted. Different amp companies measure the THD at different frequencies and ohm loads. That Eton you referred to measured 200w at 0.0001. If they allow for a higher thd the power might go up to 250w or higher. Some amp companies might measure power at really high distortion levels (20%-30%) to show a bigger power number. We see this on headunit power ratings a lot. It's a bit debatable as to how high a thd is too high or low enough to not hear it. The machine Big D uses is made by Tony DeAmore of Rockford fame and he chose 1% thd to be the certified output power. I don't know if 1% is an industry standard or just a commonly used standard. 1% is usually considered fine for automobile use. Home amps might use a bit lower standard like 0.5, 0.2 or 0.1%. Its all very technical, but usually distortion increases as power increases. It can be pretty clean up to the point the amp is under a lot of stress and then it will usually climb pretty quick. Automotive subwoofer amps are said to be "okay" sounding up to 10% thd. The uncertified power rating is a clipped signal that can vary from 5% to 10% distortion. For a mids and highs amp you definitely want to use the 1% rating. The Hi Res certification doesn't really deal with the thd, it's about higher frequency ranges (playing up to 40k hertz) and higher sample rates on the music source. Thats a whole other deal. I would imagine anyone making a hi-res certified amp will make sure the distortion levels are quite low. Anyway, hope that helps. 👍

Big D I have a question about how u test ur amplifiers on every amp Dyno do u set ur gain to match your voltage on ur rca outputs on the head unit? Thanks.
@JasonWW2000 Жыл бұрын
The AD-1 uses a special setup disc to set the gain. Since it needs to measure distortion it requires the gain to be set higher than you would in an automobile. Are you thinking the writing on the amp end cover is going to be accurate? Like a gain knob saying 4v to 0.2v? The minimum and maximum might be accurate, but you can't say that half gain is 1.9v. It doesn't work like that. Those printed numbers can and usually are inaccurate. If your looking for advice on how to set gains, for mids and highs make sure they can play loud enough, but not so much gain that your noise floor is annoying. Keep the hiss down. When playing music really loud, listen for distortion or a smell from the mids. If that happens, you've got the volume knob too high. Turn it down a bit and let them cool off. Sub amps are tricky, I always set the gain high so I can reduce them with the bass knob. Again, set them so they can play loud enough and listen for distortion or mechanical noise. Try to get a sub amp big enough that your not maxing it out. When you max out an amp it can output a clipped signal and that can really heat up the voice coils. Lots of people burn up subs by feeding it a clipped signal.

@JasonWW2000 Жыл бұрын
Remember that the 500w sub rating is a thermal power handling rating. So 500w continuous and it should be able to dissipate the heat. Depending on the enclosure, the vehicle and what frequency they are playing the ohm load is going to vary a lot. The amp may never even see a 1 ohm load. The box rise or impedance rise is always going to be higher than what your DC resistance meter reads. If you want a rough idea of the power its producing get a DC amp meter and clamp the power input wire. See how many amps its pulling. If its pulling 80-100 amps you might be getting a real 1,000 watts.
@mcnairdn Жыл бұрын
Could you make a list of amplifier efficiency and rated power? I am looking for the best power I can do with my stock alternator.
@JasonWW2000 Жыл бұрын
Any of the class d style amps should be fine. If you want to save power, lower the sub level or play songs with short bass notes as opposed to long, sine wave style bass. Sounds silly, huh? Your really overthinking things. Music is dynamic and different frequencies will have different ohm loads. So efficiency is going to jump all over the place while playing music. Instead of looking at efficiency in the amp, I'd recommend looking for it in the sub and enclosure. That will have a way larger effect. A ported box over a sealed box is going to be much more efficient. Two subs over one with the same power will have higher output. So I think your looking for efficiency in the wrong place. As long as you don't use a Class A/B amp on the sub, you'll be fine.

Great choice on amp selection, got one myself. The Destroyer subs I have no experience with, but they look the business.

Hi Big D, It would be nice to torture test these Cheapo amps..They may work for your short test periods. but what about after 24 hours ?

Is there a chance to get a scoped view of dynamic burst tests? I am very curious about the power calculation. Does the AD1 take the highest clean cycle or the average between highest and lowest cycle? Different manufacturers do it in a different way. For me if i perform a 1kHz Burst test with 20cycles I try to get a value which has all 20cycles at same voltage level. A hint for more info about that would be very nice 👍 by the way: great video as always 😊

You should see if you can get a copy of the test track. Its on a CD that can be bought. I always assumed it was a single cycle burst. One complete sign wave. I don't know if Tony has ever said or wants to say. I know Big D is not going to know the inner workings of the AD1. Have you tried asking Tony?

@@JasonWW2000I know the signals from the cd but I just want to see how the signal looks like under loaded tests. There are 1kHz bursts with 20 cycles and there are 40Hz bursts with 4 cycles in the cd. You can listen to the signals on the website.

@@audiokeller1975 I think your the only person who wants to see that. You'd probably have to contact Dereck personally and tell him how to hook up the scope. Maybe he could make a short video clip of just that. I've seen your tests and a don't know if there's a way to determine how the AD1 is measuring the output power. I think there's a power correction factor involved as well. Its a bit too technical for me.

How did you solve the rca issue?

I have one of these Stinger amps on three type R 10s in 4cu ft net ported. It's ridiculous. Highly recommend.

Replaced a taramps bass 800 with the stinger mt1000....night and day difference...sound quality is great

Taramps does have some strange preamp sections on some of their amp models. It can definitely alter the frequency response.
