So it definitely seems like this is gonna be more like a backup option. They will recommend their card first for 12-24 months, depending on the time of year, no interest financing and then they will offer this. That way you have the choice of the sale price for up to 2 years no interest or the standard price for 3 years.

Seems like a fairly reasonable offering if you need a Mac and can't buy one due to cashflow reasons. I can see this being particularly useful for people who want to get into iOS development.

I'm from PR. Best Buy doesn't give out the same benefits here as it does in the states. We can't even make online purchases. My phone was bought through the AT&T payment plan, but I had to pay the taxes upfront. I have the Best Buy card for the financing options, but they add the taxes to the total. If what they'll be doing here is like a lease, they'll most likely lease the purchase price without taxes, unless that's what the last payment will cover in the case you choose to keep it instead of upgrading. Another thing would be that, because it's "0% finance", the last payment would be the interests accrued if you decide to keep the lease. The offer could also be only if you get their card as they would need to ensure in some way that you'll be paying for it instead of just trusting you to get there monthly to make a payment.

We used to have a chain of retail stores in Sweden in the 90's where you could rent a TV, VCR, computer etc for 36 months. It wasn't very cheap, but if it broke, they would repair it for you for free. After 36 months, you had the option to return it, pay an additional fee to own it or to upgrade to a new model. They went bankrupt because people thought it was too expensive compared to just using the credit card and split the payment for 12, 24 or 36 months.

This sounds like a new method on creating collateralized debt obligation (CDO) products from '08 where instead on doing on real estate, you're doing it on electronics targeting NINJAs (no income, no jobs or assets). At some point, you have a significant percentage of people defaulting on those financing agreements, and you're left with depreciating electronic items and screwing the business up.
@thebasketballhistorian32912 жыл бұрын
Even with 0% interest, it benefits Best Buy. People who may not have bought a $1,000 laptop or delayed the purchase of one will more likely get it now. And Best Buy still makes the $1,000 sale but delayed over 36 months.

It becomes an issue when people don't pay. Now you have to spend money to collect. Probably have accounted for that in the increased total you're paying, but it's not as simple

It’s a lease not really financing. The problem is people will forget what there supposed to do at 36 months. It’s good if it’s explained & the customer remembers.
@windmaomao2 жыл бұрын
I think you guys are a bit confused on the zero interest thing. If what you end up paying is great than the original price, then it's not a zero interest thing unless you consider inflation is also part of the calculation. In that case, if the interest charged is less than 5-6%, maybe this is still can be called "zero" interest or even negative interest. Maybe, in a more technical word, you are actually selling a bond to the best buy, so that they can collect $20 a month from you. If you can get a value more than $20 out of the usage of the laptop, you are the WINNER.

Given that the M chips are so efficient that they don't need active cooling for, seemingly, most things (I'm a programmer; my fans have never kicked on automatically one time and the temps have been normal), there's a lot less heat, so I don't think the chip will degrade as quickly as others (don't get me wrong; I also love AMD). Should be fine past 3 years, IMO, at least if you get a Pro model.

Nice episode but y'all should have read the Best Buy fine print a bit closer - that 0% financing is for folks who have really good credit (possibly the folks who would be better off just buying that MacBook on sale rather than financing at full price). Looks like Citizens Pay will charge up to 29.99% interest for folks with not very good credit (the folks who would see $20-$30 a month for 3 years as the only way they can afford a $1,000 laptop but realistically can't/shouldn't put another $1,300 hole in their credit report).

this would be a cool idea if BB expands the idea to more brands, like maybe an msi laptop and im not talk about BB credit card. But paying for a "gaming laptop" to the point where that laptop would be work x maount in 3 years is what you have to pay off or trade it in and Best buy then re sells the laptop on the used market would be cool to have. Kind of like the phone market. Even if they where making 1% on it at the end of it all its better then a credit card, and on top of all that it increases foot traffic to the store.

this is kind of a bad deal, at 19.99 a month for 36 months is $930 so you end up paying 1210 for a $1000 air without taxes calculated. If you go for the upgrade at the cheapest you'' pay 2400 for 2000 worth of laptop. I'll stick with the old adage of if you have to finance a computer it's the wrong computer.
@JaseWolf2 жыл бұрын
$20 x 36 = $720. + $280 final payment = $1000. So it's bang on the RRP. But then at $200 more than what can be on sale at, $800, that's effectively an 8.3% APR if you paid interest on that sale pricing that equals up to the RRP. So.. it's them being clever with the marketing here tbf. But then yea, I'd not take up for 36 months paying anything monthly. Got my Mba on 5 monthly installments from Amazon without interest. Made the difference between me being able to or not, but beyond that.. just no chance.

So you are renting to buy with a final balloon payment, giving it back after 3 years and having no computer, despite having paid enough to own one outright with monthly payments, or you are rolled back into a new commitment on a newer system. I don't know, sounds like a way to hook people who can't afford it in the first place.
