Great list! I cut my own hair, agree with the dress thing. I no longer buy paper towels , never really did buy bottled water. I no longer buy plastic food storage containers, I re-use glass jars! I’m trying to be more mindful, use my own bags at the store etc. I feel bad for our planet....

I agree with almost all of your choices. I do spend money on haircuts - and I do buy dresses (but only for the summer. I wear them with sandals as they are much cooler in our HOT climate than anything else). However, I am reining in my impulses to buy more dresses, swimsuits, and so on because I already have plenty.

I lurve my dresses. What I’m no longer buying is clothing for my former corporate life. I’ll see clothes or shoes or handbags I used to use but no mas! No more hair coloring. Time to weed out more of the unused things in my closet and not replace anything I don’t really need. Thank you for your list.

You hit the ball outta the park with this one. I love these lists! Yours is especially impressive. I could comment on each of the 20 but I’ll resist the temptation and only mention a couple....furniture/home goods: I distinctly remember my parents saying (when my husband and I got married) that we should buy handmade wooden pieces a few at a time. This was the early 80s and while I couldn’t see myself with a lot of chrome and glass, I wanted something trendy...we took their advice and still our pieces look great. Some have been refinished but I mix in a few trendier soft pieces and recover things and freshen up that way. Dresses is the other category. For years I still bought dresses out of habit as if I was going to an office job rather than schlepping around on the farm. After covid I realized I could stick on some leggings and wear the ones I loved everyday and donate the rest. I’ve gotten so used to it I love wearing them. Lastly I started making my own soap and salves. It’s really started a whole fun hobby playing with herbs and wildflowers so basically I now look like Laura Ingalls in my dress gathering weeds to stir up some soap😂

Oh my gosh, love all of this. Yes wood furniture is the best. We are doing similar. Always looking out for good mid century pieces. Love that you love dresses. I love when people rock them for everyday purposes. And even more, love that you make your own soaps and salves. Best things are the things you make yourself. So glad you enjoyed this episode Sharon!! Great hearing from you.

I get instantly sweaty when I put a polyester on, it is painfully uncomfortable for me above my waist. But if it’s a skirt it seems fine 🤔☺️🤓 no idea why this is the case. I have found acrylic is also a kryptonite unless it’s super cold. I can only wear acrylic if I wear a cotton blouse under it. And I do that all the time because I have a kinda longish black sweater that I love with cuffed jeans and ankle boots. But it has to be blustery rain for me to be able to handle it. Natural fibers are just so much easier for me to stay regulated when it comes to my temperature, maybe it’s because my skin is very sensitive and I have a lot of allergies? I find your videos so refreshing cause no one dresses like me until now that I see you on here. I also love velvet as my special pieces and will do anything I can to CASUALIZE ha ha I use that word too. I know it’s made up but throwing old jeans on with a blue velvet top and a tshirt makes it perfectly fine for a movie night or backyard bbq 🤓 I intend to be one of those old fashionable ladies with the huge glasses 🤩

I love your presentation style! And you are so right on many of these things! I particularly liked you calling out "sale items" as a thing you've cut out. It's so easy to be enticed into buying something you normally wouldn't becuase its a deal or "sale season." Theres nothing wrong with buying something you normally would when it's priced favorably, but it's so important to be intentional and not buy something just because it's a sale. Great video Emily, I'm really excited to see more!

For the lotion: coconut oil is good but it doesn’t add moisture, but if you mix it with aloe Vera gel (real aloe gel not mixes) that can give you the moisture with the coconut oil 😊

Loved this! I am still IN for manis tho. I tend to pick my cuticles and suck at trimming them, so basically I got to the manicurist for that service alone. Plus, I tend to notice ppl's hands and their shoes, so hate when my cuticles are ragged. Second. SO with you on sale items. I have found my style. I buy it from one store and spend a lot of $$$ on each item that I then keep FOREVER. I feel like a million in all of if. Lastly, I still have a thing for shoes, both cheap ones and expensive ones. I own 4 pairs of Converse and a magnificent pair of nude Jimmy Choo's. I love all the shoes!

We bought our TV at the end of 2007, still going strong. Sure the screen is smaller than the current ones and the picture isn’t as crisp, but it works just fine, so why change it! Re Ikea I bought my teenage daughter a dresser/desk in 1983, 3 of her children have used it and now mum is again using it to store craft stuff in! It’s also done a fair bit of traveling as they have moved homes, including a move from Nova Scotia, Canada to Boise, Idaho!

I am very guilty of the sale-item thing. I am a thrifter and often overlook the quality/purposefulness/style of the garment in the moment because of the price tag. Helps not to look at the price tag (within reason)! I am also guilty of 'needing' to buy something cause I spent so long in the store and traveled all that way, only to find nothing. My silly logic is to buy something I don't really like so I don't have to go home empty-handed. The things we do for clothes!

Nice list. You’re telling the truth. Guilty of unconsciously scoping out sale items perhaps when a moment of idleness and boredom set in. I plan to keep working on it. I currently have the IPhone 6S Plus since 2014. It’s had its fair share of falls, some cracks, has slowed down but I’m still using it. Why upgrade and lose out on the functionally of a headphone jack and be forced to spend an additional $150 for headphones to use it. I’m all for tech within reason but have come to realize the constant upgrades from Apple result in minute changes.

I'm still on an iPhone 7! Problem is, the battery starts to need to be recharged much more often. Otherwise, I'd happily go back to a Nokia and play snakes. My TV is pretty bloody old too but it is a Bang & Olufsen and I paid a lot at the time, and it has lasted really well and still looks incredibly modern and sleek. Most of my furniture is inherited from my parents, and they from theirs in turn etc., so it's old fashioned and chunky but really well made.

Yes, very similar then. I think I am going to cave and buy the iphone12 because mine is starting to do weird things now. And yes, can't go wrong with Bang & Olufsen, excellent quality and holds such value. I bet you could still turn around and sell it and get some money back....love things like that. And heirloom furniture, amazing!! Thanks for your comment, great to hear you what you think.

If I were to move to a modern house, then my furniture would not suit. I can’t go too minimal on furniture style as it would look out of place in my house which is 17th century so it’s quite old. So I just don’t have much furniture instead!

Yeah I totally figured out you didn’t buy haircuts at the moment 😎 and all the rest sound very wise too. I have a few similar to yours like the haircut. I have cut my own hair and henna dyed myself for the last 6 years and it’s not bad at all. I make my own; soap, lotions, face creams and hair masks. I don’t buy cookies or cakes, I make them. Same for herbal teas, herbal tinctures and remedies ( I’m fascinated by herbalism and I’m an avid reader as well as take a few curses here and there over the curse of my married life). I don’t buy things I can make for example PJs. I love sewing them myself out of natural organic cotton jersey or interlock and dye them with plant dyes. But I’m not a minimalist yet I love choices and variety in my closet although I do like to cull my stuff to just what I absolutely love and wear often. Sadly it’s hard to do it with my personality. I’m a “Moon” person. I love to dress for my mood. Love this Emily! I did laughed so much about your Ikea dresser story because I had brought a baby dresser/ changing table when I was pregnant and it was fine for years only to fall apart last year when my son was 17 y/o. So yeah kind of flimsy but it lasted a long time. He was glad it was out of his room finally... 😂 ❤️🙏

I believe in everything that you mentioned which I have been doing, but dresses are not one of them. I am too much into feminine, romantic stuff to not wear a dress. *Try a concoction of vinegar and dawn for effectively cleaning almost anything in your house and you will not need to buy a lot of those cleaners anymore! It is like my magical cleaner. For my shower walls, sinks, and tubs, getting rid of stains, cleaning stovetops, etc. Leave the mixture for some amount of time for it to be effective. *Chemical room deodorizer, candles, and sprays. These are more stuff that gets on your skin and that you inhale that could contribute to cancer and other illnesses. Mix natural oils like lavender, tea tree, rosemary, etc, with distilled water in a spray bottle instead. *At this time of year, open windows whenever you can for good air circulation and cool, fresh air so you won't have to use up too much energy for airconditioning. *I use a dilution of ACV and distilled water as a skin tonic that I spray on my face before I apply any kind of skincare, so it will glide and the moisture to be trapped on my skin. I read that any other kind of skin tonic is mostly unnecessary and a waste of money. I have been doing this for 30 yrs now. Loved your video. Thank you!
