I'm recently in the plant community so I am learning a lot each day. Something I have realised lately is the over the top hype for variegated plants in the plant community? So plants are basically "cultured" to have variegations, sold for a ridiculous amount when from an evolutionary perspective, variegations are (often) the least functional part of a plant. Particularly, the white variegated plants (thai, marble pothos) are very slow growers because they lack chlorophyll. So that's basically like paying a fortune for a plant that's not as functional lol it's like paying more for less product. I'm finding that. variegated plants are the ripped jeans of the fashion community lol

I'm a sucker for anything with variegation. I have a Jose Bueno for years. I got it locally in Florida, before plants became a thing again. Mine is growing up a tree. I dug a piece up and brought it into the house, where it is making its way up a pole, with huge leaves. Very rewarding. I would love a Thai, which is way out of my budget. I am also hungry for the variegated Philodendron Billietiae, which is way-way out of my budget. I remember, before the current trends, many of these plants were dirt cheap in Florida. A friend just gave me an alocasia odora variegata, which I love. I remember when this plant was just another nursery plant. I have a Mickey Mouse alocasia (variegated), which is now selling for big money. The same friend recently gave me a cutting of Hoya Kerrii (variegated). I had one grow up a trellis and flowering. When I moved from that house 15 yrs ago, I took so many plants with me, but didn't take a cutting from the hoya. I had so much to do, I thought I would just buy another one when I had the time. Little did I know. I'm 60 yrs old, and I worked at a plant shop when I was a teen. So many plants that were just familiar and ordinary, are now rare. I'm trying to collect plants from my youth. It's not that I'm trying to recapture my youth, I'm trying to recapture the beauty I experienced from being around them, but have been denied because of the current prices.

Up to last year, most flowershops in my country were still selling run-of-the-mill products with little diversity. At some point, I began my search for the unique. It all began at a small nursery near my workplace. I already had some interest in Hoyas and aroids. I began to spot new aroids at this nursery, and then more species at a nursery outside town. Though the first nursery is not the primary grower, therefore a bit more expensive, it is more under the collector's radar. That made things easier to get. Some plants, however, are a way too expensive, and with some patience I expect local growers to bring down the price. My prediction: Hoyas will soon follow.

Man, I'm so jealous you got to go to Thailand, to plant lovers that's plant heaven. I got a Hoya imbricata from there and now I want a dischidia Thailand. It's probably pretty rare but it's really interesting, like little bowls. It's an ant plant. I saw Hoya imbricata in Florida so they're out there. We want to hear more about Thailand.

It sucks living in Australia, we are probably two years behind the world in plant availability!!! My wish list is just impossible at this point! 😂

Any time I'm looking for things Australian websites pop up and I can't get them. Idk what you are talking about.

We got Tortum last year, which is 2 years before the rest of the world. Australia actually has the best access to this stuff out of anywhere as most TC labs are in Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan etc. The reason we havent had them yet is a lot of nurseries and wholesalers were slow and hesitant to spend the large amounts of money needed to import them, as Quarantine costs are high. We are slowly getting them as private collectors (such as myself) are starting to invest and have them imported. I have some good sources telling me to save our money as some of the big name plants are going to be appearing in Aus soon (2021 maybe!).

Helixian3 I really appreciate all your information! I have seen the Tortum around for reasonable prices which is amazing. It can be a little heartbreaking watching videos on Greenspaces.id and other international shops and seeing the amazing prices for such rare plants, which obviously small collectors can’t quite get their hands on!!! I’ll have to patiently wait for you to bring in the goods for us! It can be upsetting how slow the process is but it is for the best.

I find colocasias are so underated and their variegation are so much beautiful and I think even prettier than most philodendrons or anthuriums

The philodendron domesticum variegated and the Philodendron jose buono are my favorite on the list. Now I gotta decide between the two 😩..

I just got the syngonium albo variagatum and the philodendron burle max before I saw this! Not sure how much it is in the US/Europe but I spent only slightly above US$50 for both here in Singapore.

I'll be honest, I've seen a lot of yellow verigated plants, but something about the ones you showed I absolutely LOVED. I don't mind yellow verigation, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it, BUT some of the ones you showed are DEFINITELY going on my wish list😂🙌🏼

Costa Farms is mass producing TC Thai. Should be available in a lot of places in 2021 in the U.S. for much cheaper than the current price tag.

Sandra Lopez While it IS nice to see these more “rare” plants come to be more widely available on the market for consumers, it is also a giant stab in the gut to small nurseries/sellers. At the same time, it’s causing the plants to lose their value and “rarity.” With big box stores starting to sell these exotic specimens, more and more people are going to have them, thus, they lose their value and just become another pothos or dieffenbachia. 😔

Gate keeping is real :( this is no real reason for pretty exotic plants to always remain expensive. New plants will always come out for small businesses to target but I’d say that the monstera C.T has had its time!

I... strongly dislike... yellow anything. Always have, always will. So my wishlist is breathing a sigh of relief! 😂 I do dig that P. tortum though 👍 I've seen the Thai Constellation in my local plant shops for the last 6 months or so. Prices around 60€ for a good sized plant. Interesting list, thanks!

I have a yellow variegated thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum and it is my favourite plant ever. I think they're seriously underrated. Ever since I found her I've had a thing for yellow variegation.

I saw philodendron ring of fire in hk. Its 1200hkd (127euro). There was white & yellow varigation on the plant but no orange leaves which is the colour that makes this plant special.

Not hating the new filming location. I love the lighting of your main living area, but if you think the sound quality is better in the office, it's great too.
