Some of the things I do as a fountain pen user may seem weird to other people. How many of these things do you recognize in yourself?

I retired a year ago.During my retirement dinner, one of my associates said that he could tell how my day was going, by how many pens I had on my desk. The more hectic the day the more pens, I never noticed that.... By the way after 30 years with the same company, I didn't get a watch, I got 30 wonderful fountain pens, one for each year.

What an awesome story! Have you named your pens after the years?! hahaha! Like, 2015--"landed the big account" or 2011--"finished that project". They gave you such a fitting and wonderful retirement. Congratulations and thanks for that really neat story!

Absolutely delighted to feel understood :-) Thank you for the feeling! The weird thing that I do with a new pen: I carry it with me everywhere for some time and smile every time I see it :-) People probably wonder why I smile stupidly while staring at the inside of my purse - I don’t care: it feels SO good!!

I bought a Montblanc 149 at an estate sale. Pen had Emerald Green dried in the nib, feed, and barrel for 20 years. It took a year to clean out. Piston filler still was not right. Picked it up one last time to try it prior to sending to Montblanc for an ungodly repair bill. Filled it with Mystery Black , and no leaks. Sudden rush of emotion, and recollections. It was working just like the one I had bought in '72. Muscle memory told me they were the same pen, and it turned out to be a '74. JOY! I can't sell it; I'll sell the accessories and have the pen for free.

I love cleaning my pens and inking them up with a new color. I love the feel of the nib on the paper and watching the ink flow from the nib. If I have an eyedropper pen, that's even better - being able to see the barrel filled with color!

I love your list, and can totally relate to all but your last point (though I have often wondered what that would feel like if I didn't have to clean it up)! Mine is that I can blissfully spend ridiculous amounts of time twirling my resin pens in the sunlight or sloshing ink in a demonstrator. I also know that a "demonstrator" isn't necessarily a person at a protest.

“I genuinely feel for lefties” that hit so hard!!! Hahaha but the weird thing about that is no matter how much ink I smudge it just motivates me more to find perfect pen/nib + ink combos that would allow relatively fast dry as well as paper testing to find what works for my needs… More stationery = happy me! 😆 (BONUS: I get to intentionally slow down while writing/practice my penmanship whenever I use a fountain pen 😂)

I use my bathroom sink because I don't share it with anyone. Also, I can't say that I really like ink blots, I've never done them on purpose so they usually mean there's a problem with a pen blurping. I understand about shading but I almost never see it myself, I guess because of the way I write. Even with fairly broad pens. I did notice some the other day with one of Monteverde's Noir inks. But it's not something I go out of my way for. Everything else, spot on. I also regularly look like a smurf. Yesterday, something new happened- I was filling a converter up (from a new pen), and I guess I twisted too far or in the wrong way or *something,* and half of the converter came unscrewed and dropped all the down into the ink bottle.... My husband came to the rescue and we poured the ink (Troublemaker Simoun- NICE and pigmented) into a plastic cup, rescued the converter and then returned most of the ink to its bottle via a funnel. Fun times. And my hands are still blue! Fun video. If I had the extra money to buy more of my faves, I would love to sling ink bottles!!!
@InkyRocks

hahaha! That is why I am such a big advocate for screw on converters. I can't understand why more companies don't make them. It's actually is a bit of an illusion. But I'm not sure her mom would be quite as understanding... I love that you throw bottles around so that I don't have to do it. All of the 20 are perfectly relatable. I really like it when I get a pen maxxed out on ink. It's probably terrible, but I'm not happy until I've gotten my 823 loaded so perfectly, I don't see bubbles. Then I like to watch the bubble grow as I use it. Probably the weirdest quirk I've got so far. Side note, Inky: What is your favorite place to shop for inks? I fall back on Goulet a lot, but they've got their limits. Since I'm in Houston, I've also got Dromgoole's, so I'm lucky there. But I've been looking for some new places to get inks I've never seen before. So, any digital holes in the wall that would be good for shopping for new pen juice?
@InkyRocks

That quirk is actually quite common! I get it! For ink, have you tried Vanness? They have a large selection and then try Shigure Inks-they carry some of the rare ones.

As I bought more pens, eventually their price started dropping. And I have bottomed out: the last 9 pens I bought were Pilot Petit1's. $3.80 ea. And I might buy a few more, so I can have one per ink color, and NEVER CLEAN ANOTHER PEN, EVER. I seem to have become a Pilot Head: I can draw whatever I like between my Elite with a posting nib, my modified Parallel, and one or more Petit1's.
@InkyRocks
@InkyRocks 3 жыл бұрын
I'm kind of leaning in that direction too. I have a dozen Pilot Parallels, and a half dozen Preppies and half dozen Pilot Kakunos--in the end, they are the most useful for standardized ink tests. They have the added bonus that I don't worry about them. But then I see something shiny...

The colours and beautiful images you have in your vids are truly something amazing! For strange things I do, I am and have always been an ink monster. About five years ago I decided to start a fresh Seven Seas pad with my inks all neatly in categories, for that year. You know, a few pages for each colour... well as my collection has got more and more out of control I keep doing it year after year. It’s like a strange ritual I do yearly now. You know you have issues when the smallest list size for my favourite blue-blacks is my top 35. I even give each one a score. Oh dear..

Thanks for this. I can relate to just about all of them ... well maybe except for the last one. Yes, the section pliers ... those I identified. ;) As for my 'weirdness' ... well ... I don't write very much these days. I retired (young) from my 'office job. due to health reasons back in 2005 and that was the end of my daily writing. I wrote clinical notes daily and used my pens often. I actually got away from pens for over a decade as I fought cancer. About 2 years ago, I got the 'bug' again and I jumped in with both feet. So, to that end, I buy pens for the pens themselves. I rarely write with them and I guess that's my weirdness. I rarely write with them but I enjoy them immensely. On occasion, I restore pens, so that gives me enjoyment beyond simple acquisition. However, I love the pens I acquire for the pens that they are .. their uniqueness, their beauty, their function. I do have about 8-10 inked that I use for customer correspondence at my workbench (I'm a watchmaker now), for the occasional note or bank check, or to carry with me to a church meeting or whatever. Anyways . . . These pens bring me great satisfaction and enjoyment .. even if there is no one else in my life that can relate .. except for the online community. :)

I'm so thankful for the online community. "Pen Heads" are no a populous bunch, so it's nice to connect with people on-line. Hi! It was Trouble Maker Ink's Abalone. But the pen is a really old "Franken" pen and it uses a sac--so the ink may be a bit contaminated with another color. That's why I don't use vintage pens for ink reviews. You can never really be sure the old ink is completely out of the pen.
