I’m a San Francisco native and the Mormons first settled in SF. When the gold rush came , prostitution increased immensely, breweries, whiskey houses were popping up, the miners traveled from SF to the Sonora mountains to pan for gold. Then China shipped in cheap labor and infiltrated also…. The Mormons evacuated to the east and settled in Utah. The history of this is written in the archives and books of the gold rush. I love your videos and just thought I would share more information. My great grandparents and grandparents owned a brewery in SF for over 70 years, during the gold rush and the 1906 earthquake .

I was stunned when someone (who was white) said that my home state of Iowa was too white. As this person was so far left, there was no trying to discuss this with her, but I asked her if Iowa should bus in minorities from other states. She said yes and she also thought the National Hockey League was too white but didn't or couldn't understand that minorities either do NOT want to play hockey or don't have the means, i.e. a skating rink. She thought there should be DEI in the NHL regardless of skating ability. Really. That should tell you all you need to know about her "critical thinking."

In all fairness, those states are not as “white” as you think. The “white alone” census stats includes Hispanic and Latino’s. Once you re-calculate for white only, not of Latino/Hispanic descent, there is more diversity than the stats indicate.

There's a reason why cities are seen as being culturally rich while rural America is kinda seen as...not.

As a Utah resident for the last 45 years (a NYC transplant) I am doubtful about the numbers for this state. Although a minority, we have a significant Hispanic population, Pacific Islander population and Native American population. As a resident who travels throughout the Utah, I think the numbers are more accurately in the area of 70% white, 30% other.

I've heard there are many more southern asians ( Indians, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Shri Lankans, etc ) that are there for the tech sector. Maine - I'm not surprised. I grew up there in the 70-80's and it was over 98% white then. I could count how many black kids were in my high school on 2 fingers lol. I didn't even know any black people until I left for the Army. Great place and era to grow up, though. Good video your presentation is very fun with what otherwise would be just boring stats people could look up. One other interesting thing about Maine is it's also one of the least densely populated States. My family still lives up there and I visit often, enjoy hiking in the middle of nowhere, which is easy to find. Hunting/fishing is excellent there, too.

I live in Houston which is said to be the most diverse city in the country. Growing up in the 70’s my high school was pretty white, but once I got to college there were a lot of foreign students in my degree program. And once I started work I always worked with quite a few foreign-born folks, Hispanic folks, etc. It’s always seemed normal to me to know lots of people from different cultures but I realize now that it’s not the same experience in other states.

Is it just me, or do ethnic Europeans feel just a little bit annoyed with the "white" label? It functions as a catch all description of us too frequently accompanied with the "lack of diversity" mantra and a lot of tired, not really funny jokes and stereotypes. Perhaps all of that is true of *some* European-Americans who have no idea which countries their ancestors came from, but it isn't true of the majority of us. In case everyone else hasn't noticed, Scandinavians are quite different in appearance and culture to Greeks or Italians. Or Irish and Portuguese. You get the idea. Describing the descendants of the people from an entire continent just by their skin color is so reductive and insulting. Would anyone dare refer to Asian Americans as those "yellow" people or Indigenous people "redskin"? You know they wouldn't. There are variations of appearance and culture of people on *every* continent and it holds true for their descendants who now live here.

It depends on where you live in a state. I live in New Hampshire and work at a major hospital. The hospital is very diverse. I know people from the Carribean, Africa, and Asia. And this includes employees in every department. We have quite a few Indian doctors. This is obviously a guess, but the hospital is at least 1/4 black. And I'm fine with it.
