Don Brash deserved so much more respect than he got. As an adult now i completely agree with what he is saying. He understood what many nzers didnt or couldn't articulate.

The man was a genius and a visionary, pity Luxon has a sack but no balls in it. As I’ve reiterated in other comments the ToW is outdated but should used as a document to help forge a new New Zealand constitution encompassing ALL New Zealanders with unity, freedom and equality.

I remember being 13 during the 05 election and being told how evil this guy was. Was the first time in my life I watched election coverage. I remember when they thought a plane had been hijacked or something like that on the night as well. I was so glad he lost. Little did I know that as an adult, I'd look back at the 05 election as that crossroads in our nation's history where if we had taken the other road, we might have had a better future. New Zealanders living in an alternate universe where Brash won are surely having a better time of things than we are. Ahhh, retrospect...

That's the problem with just listening to others warped opinions on the speech without listening to it yourself. I too, like you, was told this speech was racist. It's anything but. Pity Don never got to be PM and stop this madness

"The Treaty of Waitangi was forged in a time when categories mattered, we don't live in that world anymore." David Lange 1980. Catch up koro media. Modernity died last century in 1973 when the UK told us that we were on our own now.

In 2002, Bill English delivered a lecture at the NZ Centre for Public Law. The title of the lecture was "The Treaty of Waitangi and New Zealand Citizenship" It places the Treaty in its 1840 context of international law. Hobson and the British faced a basic choice - to mimic treaties signed elsewhere in the world, or to adopt a different model. The overseas treaties (in North America for example) provide for indigenous tribes to be protected peoples. This is why Canadian tribes are these days represented as being "first nations". Plains Indians did not obtain a right to a passport until the 1920s (from memory). The ToW on the other hand specified that there was to be one status for all citizens of a new sovereign entity in the land. That is, Maori would have the same rights and responsibilities as other subjects of Britain - the lesser status of a protected people. Article One, therefore, enabled Article Three. And Article Two was meant to end the conquest of the rohe of smaller iwi by larger iwi with guns, There had to be some awareness at the time that it would take time to reach the final destination. Yet the the final destination (very imprecisely) charted.

I thought it was great at the time - it remains so. And a tragedy that Don Brash has been treated so badly because he had the courage and intellect to speak in this way.

It was TVNZ that made a fool of Mr Brash by filming his awkwardness in getting into and out of a small racing machine. And I’m sure that had Mr Brash known how foolishly ungainly he would look getting into and out of that vehicle he would never agreed to be filmed doing so. It’s more than time that the Public had a say in both TVNZ’s content and lack of neutrality via a Board of Outside Directors, ( With Teeth, and made up of non media people ) to ensure both neutrality in political matters and quality of content.

Sean - 3 points - 1- stop virtue signalling this simplistic one rule for everyone and equality that has never existed in NZ. NZ is currently ruled by an elite 20% who have the most wealth. If they get sick - they pay money and go to a private hospital. If they want smaller class sizes they pay money to send their kids to a private school. Meanwhile a 5 year old living on the other side of town gets sick and has to wait on the public wait list - some wait too long and die because they don’t have enough money for the private hospital which has pretty much no wait lists. Another 5 year old wants to go to the same school as his friend on his rugby team but can’t because his family doesn’t have enough money. 2 - stop trying to make Maori assimilate to live like pakeha. That is what one rule for all means - basically one size (the pakeha way) fits all. The last 100 years pretty clearly shows the system does not fit with Maori and Maori culture. 3 - I think 80% of kiwis would agree the treaty’s meaning is ambiguous which leaves 3 options - 1 - do what the crown wants (hasn’t worked), 2 - do it the Maori way(never been tried) or 3 - work together in partnership. It’s funny but what do we always tell our children in this situation- “work it out together and compromise so everyone is included”. Why can’t we as a country do what we teach our tamariki/children? Thanks
