At my home range I see two very distinct types of shooters. The 'younger' crowd that basically is there to turn money into noise (it's always the ammo or gun's fault they shoot like crap) and the old heads that are methodical, paced and with purpose. Obvisously, the 'get closer' crowd has never hunted western states where 350 yards and beyond IS close. Thanks for bringing us along!

Ok, first, thank you for the video. This video demonstrates exactly what I have argued many times before. If you stalk in too close, you risk bumping your game and are forced to take a quick shot with what ever rest is available to you, or no rest at all. I’m definitely not advocating that everyone become a long range hunter, but for those who have put in the time, money and have the ability, longer shots can be done with confidence. I have yet to take an 800 yard shot on elk, but I’m confident that I can if conditions are right and I can’t get closer.
@normanhicks1892
@normanhicks1892 27 күн бұрын
It’s not about group size, it’s about time of flight. TOF for 7 PRC to 816 yards is about 1 second. .30-06 to 200 yards is under 1/4 second. A game animal can cover a lot of ground in one second. Even one step could be enough to turn a money shot into a long night following a blood trail.

I find it annoying when people try to impose their personal ethics upon others and are judgemental about it. The finer details of hunting ethics is a very personal thing and out in the bush regulation comes in the form of self regulation. I agree with your comments that ethical range is highly variable and depends on each individuals training, experience, gear, and technique. Your argument is compelling and well illustrated. Instability does introduce error at any distance. Distance does introduce risks that are less significant at shorter ranges. And buck fever ruins everything gosh darn it! Though it can be irritating to observe people pointing their bony fingers at each other over range ethics in comment sections, I think it is a good sign that a majority of hunters do have a moral compass and do consider ethical practice to be an important part of their hunting experience. Dialogue on the subject is all good even if it is a little cranky at times. Cheers!

I call bullshit on the 30-06 recoil! You make some valid points,but you really sell the '06 short. Also ,not a blade lf grass could be seen moving! Long range is math except for the wind.That's where the big problem comes in for long range shots on game.When it's calm and you and your equipment is capable, then go for it if you want.But I'd much rather hand you a 30-30 witha 2.5 x scope and tell you to get in close and earn your shot! I love long range shooting,but it's for snipers and steel targets not animals that may be just wounded.BTW,if you are capable at 800 yards,so is the 30-06! Good shooting.😊

30-06 isn't the best round for long range, but the "sniper style" 7 Prc loaded with the same weight projo is in the same ball park as the 06 ballistically ? Is the 7 Prc more economical because it burns less powder than the 06, Yes. Is it more accurate at long range with custom handloads fired out of a sniper style rifle, No.

My number with the 7prc vs an 06 . An 06 with a 185 gn bullet will drop 30 Moa and drift approximately 80 inches in a 10 mph wind . A 7 prc with a 175 will drop approximately 24 Moa and drift 55 inches .

@@elevationrifles If you compare factory loaded rounds in the same weight range the numbers aren't that far apart, especially using projos with close G1 and velocity. 06 also feeds better and has hardly any recoil.(Sorry, couldn't resist :~) The 06 has ammo availability and cost in it's favor. The 7SAUM has it's place, but it's far from superior to the 06. I enjoy watching your videos, but will agree to disagree.

You may not think so, but the second muzzle lift is all you. Playing it in .25x You can clearly see the recoil into your shoulder, the muzzle rises 2-3", comes down, then almost a full second later the muzzle rises over a foot. It's not possible for the recoil of the cartridge going off to raise the muzzle twice. The most charitable explanation is that you were off balance three times in a row and about fell backwards, which would cause you to lift your right arm as you go backwards. It doesn't look like you were that off balance, but... charitable explanation.

I was luck to have found Elevation Rifles and Matt with his wonderful invention the Bottle Rest. I live in England, yes it is expensive to have the Bottle Rest shipped to the UK, but it is worth every penny because it works. I am of the age were I know when I have carried half a beach bag full of sand to the firing point. Now I have the Bottle Rest in my range bag and don't notice the weight of the Bottle Rest. Quit complaining of the expense of shipping, if you want the best then pay for it. You spend a load of money on your rifle and associate gear just think how much accuracy is worth to you, then pay for it. If you want get some buddies to share the cost of shipping with them.

Your bagged up long range shooting was pretty good. But holyjeepers never seen anyone fake recoil before. As a guy who hunts an uncompensated, 06' that's sub 7.5lbs with scope, sling and bipod attached, and regularly shoots 180's that was just the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Also this NRA fuddlore squeeze slowly, don't ever know when the rifles going off nonsense needs to die. It is a technique that literally only works bagged to the max on static targets. If you're going to be shooting offhand you need to know when your gun is going off so it fires when it's aimed at your target, not somewhere adjacent to it. You can shoot good groups without a bunch of gear, but you need to be practicing trigger control, i.e. controlling when the gun goes off without pulling the shot. The gear and the 20 sec trigger squeeze may let you skip some fundamentals, but they won't replace them.

Now days, I'd rather shoot my 6.5 Creedmoor Tikka CTR, if shooting long range. Bigger cartridges work fine for long range, if you can handle them, or they are set up optimally. Don't lose subscribers because you are over dramatizing situations. The reason I started watching your videos is because you keep it fairly honest and simple. Explaining things well, and proving your point. I can't stand that idiot backfire, and your first videos kind of called that idiot out. The problems with long range hunting involve people using inappropriate calibers that don't transfer enough energy at such ranges, bullet flight time that allows for animal movement, and guess work with wind in 'real' hunting scenarios. There are enough !@#$shows posted on youtube that people apparently feel are ethical to indicate it 'is' a problem. The othe problem I have is picking off a cagey mountain muley at 800 yards, after spotting him with crazy effective optics, just takes all his experience at outwitting a hunter out of the picture. It may be cool for whitetails on a field that are plentiful, but game out west is having a hard time. I feel for the big old bucks that are getting sniped. What chance did he have?

Hunting is not being a Sniper. You should try to be as ethical as possible under the circumstances. Animals move and are not stagnant targets. Before shooting you should be stable, as close as possible and using a consistently accurate weapon for the ranges you are shooting. Unless you have the external variable perfectly mapped out 800 yards is farther then most people could hit 50/50 times, so I do believe it is un wise and not exactly ethical lol. Too many variables at those ranges for hunting under most circumstances.

The only thing you've proven is anyone can shoot off a bench at distance. Shooting game at distance isn't something you should be trying to prove to your viewers whom most have no business taking that kind of shot. Secondly you mentioned the grass being too high well "poor baby" that's a realistic condition in the field. Lastly show your 3006 some love. You handled that recoil like you never shot it before which is likely the cause for the poor groups for being inexperienced with your weapon.

You are missing a ton of factors in long range shooting. Adrenaline, fatigue, breathing, heart rate, wind calls, shifting wind, angles, bullet flight time, an animal that can move a half step at any time and other variations have an effect on your accuracy. Wind and the animal moving are gonna cause more wounded animals than anything. I could care less how accurate you can be on a bench at 800. I can hit 10 inch steel at 900 with a 16" 308 all day... on a range with a spotter and wind meter. You send anyone, myself included, on a 5-mile hike, put a trophy animal in front of them and i guarantee 80 percent or more won't hit that 10 inch circle on the first shot at 900 with mild variable winds. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm saying there's too many uncontrollable variables to claim 800 yard shots on animals is ethical. It's an extreme risk unless you have nearly zero wind and have a shooting position just like you do at the range. This can happen, but it's not often.
