So I’m sitting in my 98 ranger on the side of the road,broke down!!! My phone has very little battery life. I think to myself, I will find some helpful info on utube. I click this video for help, after two commercials finally the video starts…… And as he slowly crawls to getting around to the point my phone battery --------------------------------

Having the same exact problem with my 2004 ranger V6 4.0. Got a new relay, cleaned battery terminals, swapped the starter. Still have this problem randomly. Is it the ignition or key itself? I’m stumped.

Could be a ground wire or the ignition or key.

Should check the fuse too. Bad Ground wires can definitely cause this. So can a bad battery.

I would say now your problem is fixed that the ignition may have a rod that goes from the key cylinder to a switch on the column down by the firewall if so it may be bad or maybe the key is failing. Those cars have smart keys and they don't look like it but they have a chip in the head but I think the engine cranks with the key but won't start. I had some problems with mine but it turned out to be a ground issue I think. Mine would click once and all the lights would go out and it wouldn't crank but if I took the battery cable off and put it back on it would start eventually it quit doing it

Garuntee you it's a failed starter solenoid needing to be replaced for almost every ford ranger having these issues, trust me and check it out, troubleshoot it or just replace it, it's like 30 bucks,

I didn't not know that when you get a rebuild starter that they don't really rebuild the hol starter that sucks

Wow you could have made this 5 minutes and been done. List everything you checked and did without the details. Sometimes a ignition switch will fail. That car has a smart key so if it ever cranks and won't start don't forget to check that. I see you have an Explorer instrument cluster in yours I have a 2001 and I changed mine to the white face and put LED lights in it looks way cool at night

I am having a very similar problem. What I have discovered is that if you jiggle your gear shifter (with foot on brake) and you move it from PARK to REVERSE and back to park.... then try turning your key... my truck cranks right up, but I am having to do this trick more often. Any ideas on a fix?

Is there a clutch switch where you need to hold in the clutch if it's standard or if automatic it sounds like the ignition switch isn't allowing the shifter to get into full park which is probably the column switch under the steering column by the firewall

Haddows was two years ago, but if you happen to see this reply, thanks for saving me in the parking lot. My 2000 Ranger just decided not to turn over clicker anyting, and shipping back between neutral to get out of the neutral safety helped. Had no idea that was a thing, thanks for keeping me from getting stranded!

I have an issue w/ myc99 ranger.there is some hydraulic fluid around where steering wheen would be under hood.( close to there). It just started.anybodyy got any ideas? Thnx

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger and mine has the same problem like you a month ago it didn’t start at all no crank at all but the radio turns on the dome light turns on and the blower turns on I tried starting it couple times and it wouldn’t crank So I left there for about an hour and when I went to turn it back on and turned on like nothing happened and then a month and a half later it does it again I try starting it about 10 times nothing. Then an hour later it starts like normal I have no idea what it is. I was looking at my battery terminals one has lots of white corrosion on it . Do you think that can cause it . The battery is about 1 year old .

Yes. Definitely should clean them. You can use a wire brush. Also make sure they're tight when you put them back on.

I currently drive a ranger around the same age and I replaced the starter and starter relay and my truck still won’t start randomly and sometimes it does no clue why

Might be the ignition cylinder. When you have issues Starting, try pushing the key in and wiggling while you turn it. Worth a try. Also check your battery terminals to make sure they're not corroded or loose.
