"India's position has been vindicated," Ambassador Asoke Mukerji, India's Former Permanent Representative to the UN says on 'The Gist'. That's because 14 out of the 100 participants of the 'Summit on Peace in Ukraine' in Switzerland similarly dissociated themselves from the communiqué. India took part in the conference over the weekend. But did not "associate" itself with the joint communiqué, along with several countries. Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico and the UAE were among those that did not sign the communiqué. Brazil as an observer, didn't either. Ambassador Pavan Kapoor, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs represented India at the two-day meeting.
Ambassador Mukerji found it "very curious that there was no serious attempt made to even produce a document which would reflect the sense of the house. There could have been a Chair's summary. We did that in the G20 when there were differences. But, here there was a communiqué which was pushed as a unanimous document. It was primarily for that reason that India decided to dissociate itself from the communiqué. So in a sense, issuing a communiqué became counterproductive. It would have been much better if the chair had issued a broad framework. It could have contained the guidelines and signposts of the path to peace. But here there is no signpost of any path to peace."
India's Former Envoy to the UN found "it instructive to recall what happened on the 17th of February 2022. That was one week before the current aspect of the war started. The United Nations itself briefed the Security Council. And it's in the record that the Minsk agreements remain the only viable political framework for a solution of the Ukraine problem. And the Security Council failed to act on that. When you take that perspective into account, to keep one of the belligerent parties, Russia, out of the framework of the peace agreement, appears to have been also counterproductive. Take the example of the Syria peace talks, which Switzerland is also hosting in Geneva. They started with putting the parties in separate rooms and then bringing the two together."
Ambassador Mukerji, a Distinguished Fellow at the Vivekananda speaks to StratNews Global's Amitabh P. Revi on the deeper nuances, implications and take-aways for India from the Conference. He addresses questions on:
India's participation
The non-implementation of UN Security Council UNSC) resolutions and the Minsk Agreement
Why the OSCE, of which Russia is a member, has been sidelined
The CICA (Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia) and China
The ramifications of 'might is right'
Switzerland's history and it's being a current member of the UNSC
Double standards on weaponisation of food security and
Lessons for India from history.

A very interesting and educative interview. Amb Mukerji conveyed a perspective which touched that many of us are unfamiliar with, particularly with regard to the UN and the conduct of such conferences which ignore the lessons of history and do not offer any meaningful outcomes. Your questions were also very relevant Amitabh.

Yet another superb show and Amitabh Revi’s journalistic skills is getting sharpened from episode to episode. Good on you Revi👍 In this prolonged Ukraine-Russia conflict one would have thought that the Swiss were a safe pair of hands thanks to their “neutrality at any cost” fame. Strangely they played their unique card very poorly. That leaves the mediation opportunity to only one country and that is India. Whether India would want to play that role or not is a moot question. On the face of it it looks as though the West, or more accurately the NATO powers aren’t going let go the opportunity to bleed Russia to death and push it to the wall, and to get it achieved just with Ukrainian lives. What a tragedy. Reminds us of China using Papisthan against India with no care at all if Papisthan itself gets dissolved(good thing😉) and their citizens on the streets. The NATO approach also reminds us of the American approach against the then Soviet Union - keep competing with them by ramping up the expenditure on Defence production, and the phenomenally expensive Space Explorations efforts to unsustainable levels (“Two Sides of The Moon” by David Scott & Alexei Leonov, Pocket Books, 2004) - leading to the collapse of the USSR. The NATO powers can’t wait till the Russian 🇷🇺 Federation gets dissolved. Isn’t this Russophobia ⁉️

Zelensky could have retained 2 oblasts of Donbas under federal constitution of Ukraine by keeping them demilitarized as per Minsk Agreement & retaining sovereignty over them but will now lose much more after serving US proxy interests. It was Kerch bridge attack followed by drone attack on Moscow last yr which was denied but indirectly celebrated by Zelensky depicting Hindu War Goddess Kali in very objectionable manner, that led to annexation of 4 south eastern Oblasts of Ukraine into Russia. Zelensky's next foolish attempt to invade Russia from Ukraine's north & attack Belgorod has now forced Russia to annex another land corridor in Ukraine's Kharkiv & Sumy region also. Putin had then floated idea of securing buffer territory into this region too which arrogant Zelensky not only ignored but celebrated it by saying that the attacks were done by Russian separatists & not Ukraine. A divided Ukraine can not become Article 5 guaranteed member of NATO & a divided buffer country which not only keeps enemy (NATO) away but also provides secure, annexed land corridor to Russia's national borders can become the best guarantor of Russia's national security. Any price Russia may pay now will be worth trillions for the benefit of its posterity. This war has now only one end result : Destruction & division of Ukraine and negative economic & social consequences on EU.
