Here's one from the category of games you never knew you wanted to see again - it's the 1-4 Panthers vs the 0-5 Redskins from 2001!
The '01 Redskins were absolutely awful - until, suddenly, they weren't.
The '01 Redskins under one-and-done Marty Schottenheimer started out abysmally, being blown out by 14+ points in their first 4 games followed by a dismal 9-7 Monday Night road loss to a team we don't mention in polite company. Along the way they jettisoned an ineffective (being charitable here) owner-picked starting QB, inserting late-edition Tony Banks (who joined after training camp and barely had time to crack the playbook). Combine that with the transition from nice guy Norv Turner to Marty Ball and Redskins Nation was in for a rough ride.
For three quarters, the 0-5 Redskins remained truly awful. And then, "suddenly" happened. "Suddenly" floated into the hands of Lavar Arrington, who raced down the far sideline for 67 yards with Redskin Redemption in his hands. "Suddenly" turned Tony Banks into a fourth quarter precision passing machine, turned Rod Gardner's hands from rubber to glue, turned 2001 into a season with some great memories to be shared after all.
This win kicked off an 8-3 run for the Redskins to finish out the '01 season (if only there were few more weeks, they might've made a wild card run, eh?), and capped off a 6-game winning streak for the 'Skins over the Panthers.
Kenny Albert and Tim Green drew the short straw to call this game, one that turned out to be unexpectedly entertaining in the end.

One of the big mistakes Snyder made by firing Marty
@KMC5240

For sure. And Synder fired him because he couldn't help but meddle. When Marty was hired in 2001, he was named Head Coach and GM. He basically had total control. After the 2001 season, Snyder wanted to take away Marty's GM role. Marty didn't go for it, and that was it.

Arrington’s pick-six turned around not only this game, but the entire season.

Yep! What’s crazy is he had a concussion, when he did it.

Marty Schottenheimer's first win as Redskins coach... started 0-5 then went on a run finished 8-8 in his one and only season... should of kept Marty... that was the start of the dysfunction of the Daniel Snyder era!!💯💯 continue to rest Coach 🙏🏽🙏🏽

What a wild season. As great as it was to go from 0-5 to 8-8, thoses L’s to Dallas (twice) and that Chicago loss in the end of the season really hurt. Could have easily went from 0-4 instead to 11-5 and winning the NFC East.

We were at this game.... Washington down 14-0 ... Everyone decided to head back to the car with 11:00 minutes left in the game Carolina driving .... By the time we got to the second level Lavar had the interception for the TD.... By the time we hit the parking lot Rod Gardener caught the game tying TD by the time we hit car we were in OT.... Drinking Miller High life and eating chicken listening to the game on the radio....It was the game that turned an 0-5 team to an 8-8 season.... And true to form Daniel Snyder fired Marty ,and hired a college coach that killed the team the next year....

I was in basic training for early part of this season. My dad would send me the sports pages after games. My drill sergeants would smoke the crap outta me whilst telling me how bad my team was haha

Thank you for your service, it must have been crazy for you to be in basic training when 9/11 happened, I can't imagine what you must have thought.

This season was a rollercoaster. When the Skins were bad, they were BAD. Then they'd have these real gritty moments and won some games as a tough, Marty ball team. Do you have the game from the next week where we beat the Giant 35-21? Been dying to see highlights from that game. Great work as usual! Thank you!

We will return to 2001 someday soon, and we will enjoy that Giants game together. It’s a good one!

They should have stuck with Marty. They finished 8-3 this year!

The description isn't accurate. It's Tim Green paired with Albert. Baldinger was Menefee's partner that year.

@@RetroSkins It looked like Gardner was never touched on the long catch in OT. Catches weren't reviewable then, right? Green at the end suddenly forgot the last TD for Gardner was overruled.

It was reviewed. Looks like the defenders foot hits Gardners helmet.would have been more fun if left as a TD

Didn't Aarington leave this game early with a concussion. Back then they would let a player back in the game if he could still stand up.

What a great memory! Arrington went down injured (not tagged as concussion), time out called and moments later he was up and ready to play the next down. They wouldn’t let him for one play but then he was back in there.
