2002-2006 Toyota Camry Idle Reset

Learn how to reset the Idle after changing the battery. I just tried what two dealerships told me, a different method auto zone said and 3 other KZbin methods….then came across your video. Bro I could tear up! Chriss4365: I just went through a procedure, on KZbin, by a man outside America. Probably, EU, due to right side steering wheel. I went through his "procedure" which was about 16 steps, overall. Spent about 45-50 minutes getting through it, after disconnecting battery for 30 minutes of that, to reset the idle on 2003 Camry 2.4L. It did NOT work. I just used YOUR method of resetting the idle. It took about 5 minutes to go through your procedure. After about 2 to 2-1/2 minutes, the idle creeped back up where it should be. Smooth idle. Almost purring. Like it should. Thank you. I remember this when I owned my 03 4cyl Camry. I had it 6 years with 2 batteries, and it also had to do this "relearn" technique. I fixed it by driving a long distance without stopping and it worked.

2003 Camry, takes on/off 3x, do it fast, on the 3rd turn, turn the car on and pull the break, put car in Drive. This worked. Key is to do it faster then shown.

This video is a GOLDMINE of useful information! Thanks so much for posting this. This just happened to me today! I had to unhook and change the battery in my 2002 Camry V6 for the first time since owning it. I nearly got in 3 accidents in busy intersections from "0" idle stalling out on the first drive after the new battery installed - not knowing anything about this ridiculous issue of Toyota's "computer idle reset". It took 2 iterations of the video instructions before it "learned" the 500 RPM idle again. I turned on the A.C. half way through the second time, that seemed to help it get back up to normal. @@tonystark701 It did go up "that" time, when running the idle reset procedure. The RPMs going 'up' a little was the target goal here for this dangerous low idling issue. The RPMs no longer fluctuate low, and don't change when turning on the a.c. - everything back to normal - after following this video's instructions. Purring smooth!

@@UglyOckren That's quite interesting. My idle rpm drops when I turn on the AC and drops even further when I put the car into drive. Someone said that isn't supposed to happen with the AC. Not sure if there's something wrong.

Your issue may be a bad throttle body. Remove the air intake and have some one put the car in acc and press the gas pedal see if the throttle opens all the way if not it's bad. Check my Playlist I have another video cleaning the throttle body in this car and you can see me test the throttle for proper function.

I just changed my battery awhile back on 2002 Camry,and it used to idle just fine after putting new battery in it idles at zero,so does this actually work this way ,I hope so wat causes that you should be able to change a battery on this kind of car and not mess with idle

Its a stupid design the computer controls the idle via the throttle plate. Older cars have a ide air control valve that stays open to let extra air into the engine at cold start up so it doesn't stall. They always work even if you disconnect the battery if it has a mechanical throttle body have fun resetting the ecu. My old truck has a IAC valve and starts and idles perfect even when i reset the ecu I will avoid cars with the mechanical throttle as long as I can.

After disconnecting battery, change spark plugs on the 2000 V6 Camry my idle jump to 2000 rpm. After adjusted down the throttle to 800, the automatic transmission makes a clunking sound going from park to reverse and from first to second while parked. Not sure it could be reset like this on the 2000 Camry, could be high RPM, linkage, may need to change the tranny oil.

These cars have a electronic throttle body there is no way to adjust it. the computer is responsible for learning idle and maintaining idle. The clunking sound could be the torque converter having a slight slip but cant say for sure. you will have to diagnose it. If it shifts ok when driving i wouldn't worry about it. I would drain the trans fluid and look at it. If you do save the old fluid incase you have issues so you can put it back in. If you have no idea if it was ever changed you can save what comes out and add back the equivalent new fluid and see if it helps, if it gest worse drain the fluid again and add back in the old stuff and at that point the transmission is in rough shape and wont last much longer, so save up to have it replaced.

When you remove the battery it resets the ecm. You have to let it relearn the idle. This car in the video is stubborn you have to drive it for 30 minutes using one foot on gas and one on brake so it doesn't stall.

This process doesn't work as shown many on youtube. it can't idle so how do you let it sit in the Drive mode w/o press the gas pedal . The engine just die immediately

Process will be different as you cant use brake and put it in gear. You'll need to drive it. Never knew this car has a manual version.

Getting the temperature up may help but the ecu still needs to learn how to idle with a cold engine as well. These are a stupid design and do not have a idle air control valve its all computer controlled. The old IAC system would idle perfect instantly even after resetting the ecu but not anymore this new system is worse than the old system.

@@bobprobert1551 If the car has Iac valve it might be defective or dirty inside. If it doesnt have one you can watch this video. Might be a dirty or worn out throttle. Check the wire connections to the throttle body. It's the lame mechanical version no throttle cable.

They use an electrical motor. Motors are mechanical because they have moving parts.

@tonystark701 the ecu is not properly controlling the idle. Yes the rpms go up when ac is on. Engine needs more torque to turn the compressor.

The car had no typical emergency brake so that is the e brake. My trucks e brake is also pressed by foot there is no lever to pull. They are both the same thing parking and e brake in one.
