I just finished doing this today for a customer and rather than removing steering arms I turned the steering wheel all the way to the right which moved the arms out of the way and the compressor came right out. I did not have to remove anything else. Great tip using the ratching swivel wrenches.

Before adding refrigerant, you gots to vacuum down the system to make sure no leaks or air in system.

@adamdrach5394 2 жыл бұрын
@ Trader Jay, I was wondering if he was going to mention that. Yes you do need to pull the vacuum on the system so it will work correctly.

But it does give you a lot more room to work on the air conditioning and compressor system when you take the wheel off and take the front fender well off everything's right there then you don't have to worry about taking the cooling fan off or the fan shroud or any of that so I give him points for that.

Do I have to drain the coolant in order to remove the A/C Compressor or is that just Freeon on the ground?
@Eazyauto
@Eazyauto 2 жыл бұрын
No you don’t have to drain the coolant that’s Freon

Nice installed I know it was little over a year but question I have ask, what brand of compressor did you use and do you remember the model number on the green tag 2:59 mark in the video. Thanks

I most likely got it from Napa since it was directly across the street from the shop

I just did this on my 02' F150 5.4. Only I was super cheap and slapped in a $36 newish-looking compressor I found on a truck at the junkyard. I did put in a new dryer. It works though and the a/c blows ice cold. I also removed the idler arm, and yea it took some wiggling to coax the old one out, but really it's not that bad of a job.

@@adrianvega4817 including ac recharge that’s about 30 mins so rough estimate a good 3 hours from taking the compressor out installing the new one and recharging the system it didn’t take me long at all even recording it still felt like a 3-4 hour job and that’s from stopping trying to explain so I’d say 3 hours total

If the system is full of Freon then yes it would need to be vacuumed but if there’s no Freon in the system then it’s fine to take apart

You’d have to recover the refrigerant then vacuum. Best to just pay a shop to do it right. Don’t what moisture in your system that could kill the compressor a few years down the road possibly.

I'm going to be doing it with the V6 engine, but also replacing the dryer. Will take a look if moving the steering linkage out of the way will help. There may be more room in the 4.3 L version.

Got done with it. On v6, comes out easy from the top after intake filter removed. Easy. Even the dryer tower came out easy after pulling out the wiper fluid reservoir. Only had to disconnect upper radiator hose.

That way works for a 2wd I got a 4wd so unbolting the steering arm thing won't do it.

I seen people take it out from the top but that consisted of taking the fan off to get that clearance to take it out
@Mudpuppyjunior
@Mudpuppyjunior 2 жыл бұрын
Not true. The compressor just fits behind the steering linkage on 4WD. You place it completely vertical, slide it part way up, turn it 90 degrees and up it goes. Drop the back and there it is. No taking the fan off. No fighting the steering linkage. I'm not even sure you have to take the idler arm off. I did but it might have fit had I just turned the wheels to the driver side.
