The 4 cylinder wasn't available from 1999+ (the mid cycle refresh), only the 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 was. If people sprayed the salt off of the bottoms of their vehicles in places where they is constant snowfall every year, rust wouldn't be a problem. My 2003 don't have a spot of rust. It was sold in FL, ended up in NC & I had it transferred to GA then bought it. It's be registered in GA, FL, NC & TN. It's quite the pearl of a no rust southern 4Runner, that's for sure lol.

Thankfully in colorado it is too dry during the winter to have negative effects on our cars, plus we use phosphorous on the roads in the winter rather than salt..but there is clearcoat fade on the roof of my 02 Accord due to the hot summers

I love that color. There was one in my neighborhood but it was the victim of a hit & run which totaled it. I have a 2003 SR5 V8 that has almost 92k. Love it to death & can't drive it enough. I've put almost 40,000 miles on it since I bought it 2 years ago. I had a 98 SR5 V6 that was totaled in an accident (Wasn't my fault, a guy in a Honda Accord pulled out in front of me.) Hit him at 50-60 & walked away wouldn't a scratch.

@ 8:23, it doesn't have an exhaust leak, that's just how it sounds, lol. The 5vzfe has a flat sounding exhaust note and Toyota should have silenced it out.

While these trucks naturally have a loud engine & exhaust note, this 4Runner did have an exhaust leak!

ThatGearHead™ Everybody has their own idea of what's quiet and what's loud, but compared to other trucks of its vintage, this Runner will be slightly louder in its original factory form. If you look underneath, it doesn't have a resonator (that 2nd muffler), unlike most if not all other trucks. Toyota apparently was too confident that the truck's name will sell itself they cheaped out on the exhaust system. This Runner in the video appears to be an '01 or '02 w/c, if compared to an '01 Nissan Pathfinder will look, feel, and sound old and dated. Mind you, Nissan switched out the older VG33E (163 bhp) with the award-winning VQ35DE (235 bhp, vs the 5vzfe's 183 bhp) at this time. The Pathfinder was lighter, had a revvy smooth and powreful engine, All-Mode 4wd, limited slip rear diff, and had softer spring rates that made it ride more like a sedan than a truck.

Youd be wrong about that bro. R50 Pathfinder 1996-2002 is among the most reliable cars out there. Only issue is rust and the trailing arm bushing going bad at about 140-160k. Engine has chain driven cam with VVT, zero issues unless you don't change the oil regularly. Tranny also absolutely bulletproof. Transfer case is switch activated and never grinds when engaging or disengaging. Rust though is bad and there was a recall for front strut reinforcement for this reason.

I miss the old Tacoma and 4Runner. Back when the Tacoma shared much more with the Hilux and the 4Runner actually looked like the Tacoma. I’m gonna get so much hate from Toyota USA fans by saying that but it’s just my opinion.
