Man, just found this. I was 11 then and standing near you probably. That takeoff set me into my career. I'm an aerospace engineer in flight sciences at Gulfstream Aerospace now. I'll never forget that day. Greatest aircraft ever.

Reminds me again how difficult it is to hold a small camera still - emphasised so much when zooming and darting around other spectators. Still I thought it was worth posting and glad you enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to fly Concorde twice. Once I personally paid the upgrade on a business trip. It was my vacation that year. A 2h38m long vacation for the $500 upgrade fee - more than a typical transatlantic price at the time. The second time combined a QE2 crossing eastbound with a Cunard chartering of a Concorde on return. Both well worth it - and by a strange coincidence the same Captain (Colin Morris).

Love this video - I was there that day (probably pretty close to you - I might even be in there somewhere). I wondered if it would be practical to use a clip (probably about a minute) from this video (suitably credited). I'm planning to do a presentation on the history of supersonic aircraft to the Toronto chapter of the CAHS, and I would like to include some material on the last Concorde flight from Toronto.

The good old days at Terminal 1 when you could go up to the roof to watch the planes take off before catching your flight.

Concorde was an excellent technical achievement and a superb experience flying in it. The cabin and cockpit personnel were clearly proud to be flying the aircraft and took delight in ensuring that passengers got a special experience when I flew. Whilst the cabin is quite small (2 x 2 with a centre aisle) and the seats were not what we might consider "typical first class width' it was very comfortable and only a bit more than three hours. Generally, there was not a long "loading time" nor much delay between pushback and takeoff at Heathrow. I was fortunate enough to fly twice (Heathrow to Washington where I paid the upgrade on a business flight - I was single at the time (!) and the other Heathrow to New York on a Cunard charter, returning after a transatlantic QE2 crossing. Captain Phillip Morris was the pilot both times!

Where are you standing? On top of airport garage? What terminal? What a gorgeous bird! Hear those Olympus engines burn!
@ricketyca5 жыл бұрын
I seem to recall it was Terminal 1 (at the time). It was built as a circular building with a centre core of multistorey parking. The garage extended to the roof. If you have Google Earth its history mode lets you go back to 2002 for the airport and you can see the terminal as a square with the ring of gates around it. Cars entered via a tunnel which opens out just before the building

Yes. Last departure of Concorde from Toronto. Certainly narrow. There were two seats each side and they were very comfortable but nowhere near as wide as current First Class. However, it wasn't a long flight timewise!

I suspect you are right that you have the outbound departure from Heathrow for this aircraft. This too was on digital video tape (actually a Sony IP5 which had a MicroMV tape format). I used to edit on my laptop then produce Video CDs then DVDs from our trips and events.

Great videography, did the person have Parkinsons ? Sorry I shouldn't joke but it's very annoying that these videos are few and far between and if such poor quality.
@ricketyca5 жыл бұрын
I am not sure how old you are Mark, but this was taken on a hand-held personal video camera and as you can see it is 16 years ago. I can admit that it is difficult to hold a zoomed camera well and I have not been totally successful :) Fortunately, although people do develop Parkinsons, I have not yet been diagnosed with it, so remain hopeful. I too use the term with disdain when watching cinema movies where the camera shakes or CGI has been introduced to make it look shaky to "enhance the dynamic effect". In this video, it was being able to detect that it was a Concorde rather than a C152 (by zooming) or get some shakiness. It's interesting that you bothered to watch it and use valuable time in posting, even though you mistyped "if" when you meant "of" - but I am not complaining about your keyboarding skills. This was taken so I would have a memento, but thought some others might be genuinely interested so I posted it. I see other comparable recordings that look as though they were taken by some of the people I was trying to avoid in the shot as the aircraft climbed out. I can assure you though that the video is nothing like the ride one gets on board.
