no need to drain all the coolant first? my check engine light just came on due to the thermostat, think its stuck open dashboard gage does not move.

I don’t drain the coolant. I Just put a catch container under it.

No. The small loss of antifreeze is minimal. Only thing I'd add is make sure the thermostat housing/area is fully cleaned before reattaching.
