I have the diecast of Robby Gordon's car, and I'm a Special Olympics athlete! I got to compete at the 2017 Special Olympics Winter World Games in Austria last March, came home with the bronze medal in Floor Hockey!

If any of you are wondering, Joe Varde (who made his only Cup attempt that I can recall in this race) is a retired sports car racer. Today, he's the Team Manager for Rum Bum Racing in Grand-Am's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

i turned 16 the day after this race and I remember my guy Robby Gordon sweeping the road courses

Too bad Kevin Hamlin left the 31 car 🚗 because Robby could have stayed and could have won more races for that team.

That was as bad of luck Jeff Gordon ever had, Damn I was pissed. Spun out on the first lap, first corner and on the last lap, last corner.

Excellent pre-race feature with Wally Jr about safety teams. Rather inexcusable that NASCAR would rather deflect medical responsibility to the circuit. The Holmatro Safety Team (now IndyCar's traveling medical crew) don't simply know each of the drivers, each MD knows each driver's medical history, including their past injuries. Imagine a visit to the doctor's office and your doctor is never the same person you got last time. Betcha didn't know that Casey Mears, who had a superb run in this race, was the man who replaced Alex Zanardi after that savage crash at the Lausitzring. Before he turned to stock cars, he aspired to be like Uncle Rick; in his CART IndyCar debut he was 4th in the Marlboro 500 at Fontana, driving for Bobby Rahal.

25:16/2:20:18 I remember watching this and when Jeff Gordon spinned on the first turn of the first lap, I was bummed, but when he wrecked at the last turn of the last lap, I got a good laugh because who else wreck on the first turn of the first lap and then wrecked at the last turn of the last lap. That's one to fifty thousand right there.

I loved it when he spun coming to the checker lol

As a Gordon fan I remember how I felt in 2003 when this happened. I just felt right there that was the end of any hope of winning the title. You just didn't normally see things like that happen to Jeff ever at that time so I knew it was over. Michigan Bristol and Darlington where just the final nails in the coffin 💀💀💀

What is the name of the song that plays in the end showing the results of the race ?

An edit of "Fuel" by Metallica; same song NBC/TNT used for the intro, just a different part of the song.

NascarNixon I do. I was 9 at the time and my 3rd year watching NASCAR and shockingly, he happened to be my favorite driver that season because I loved his paint scheme. I was set to meet him the following week before the Michigan race at Outback Steakhouse (as I lived there at the time) and when the crash happened, I was pissed and was (in my head) like "Seriously?! The week before our Meet & Greet, you wreck on Lap 1!". It was disappointing for me to watch, but I still have this race on VHS. I miss these good old days of NASCAR

Easily the most underrated American racing legend. Championships in IMSA, SCCA Trans-Am (in its heyday), and Grand Am, IndyCar Rookie of the Year, won the 1995 Michigan 500 over Al Unser Jr, IROC at Daytona, 5 overall wins at the Rolex 24, and many other successes.

I’ve always appreciated what Mike Helton did for NASCAR but wow, watching all the drivers urge for a different safety worker system while Mike just says what we have works for us was the most tone deaf thing ever…
