Not sure why they didn't do at least a Victory Lane interview but yeah.. October 11th, 2003 Charlotte Motor Speedway Credit to NBC.

My wife and I sat at the track all day that day. If I remember correctly the Busch series race was rained out the night before so that ran it that morning. 20 years ago and seems like yesterday. I remember when the public address announcer gave the countdown for live TV broadcast to kick over. Seeing Richard drive thar #3 car was just amazing. There is something really special about being at Charlotte for the fall race. It was cool that night, it had been wet. But when those engines start up it’s race time!!!!

Didn't know they did a thing for Dale before the race. That's nice.

To answer your question about why they didn't do the victory lane interview that night. They had run very late on the east coast due to some delay and by the time this race ended, they were way past the allotted time frame. They cut the interviews as a result and got a bunch of flack about it the following week. At least if my old memory serves correctly.

This was my first NASCAR cup race. I was six years old when I attended this race. I miss the way the cars used to look.

Great race remember watching this live the first year of the race being aired on a Saturday night until 2018 when they started the Roval.

They moved back to Sundays in 2015, not 2018.

About time the fastest car wins the race, great battle between Stewart and Newman at the end. Stewart had a decent 2003, and it took him 14 races to pick up a win in his first season as defending champ. 2003 still was one of Stewart's worst along with his 2006 and 2008(for obvious reasons).

The reason they didn't do an interview was because they had a new episode of Saturday Night Live scheduled that night, and the Executive Producer of Saturday Night Live apparently gets very upset when sports programming bleeds into the timeslot. After getting blowback, in the remaining years of their first contract, NBC scheduled a repeat episode of Saturday Night Live the night of the race, and that is likely why NASCAR was fast on postponing last years (2015) race. That said, they could have done like they did in 2006, and had an in depth post race program on either TNT or CNBC

Also, you can blame the XFL originally for that.

Yep. I do find it funny though that it's so rarely mentioned that during that timespan the 48 car was the only car invited to the Goodyear tire tests at Charlotte.

No stages and no deliberate green/white/checker finish...and yet the finish to this race was 100x more dramatic than anything nowadays...go back to 2003 rules
