This is the first installment of the 2004 3.2L TL Engine Replacement series. There's a bit of a bonus with this series in that the vehicle getting the engine has a manual transmission. The engine we're using came out of a vehicle with an automatic. So for those of you interested in an automatic to manual swap, this gives you a pretty good indication of what you're up against. BTW, you would also need to swap computers if you were going from automatic to manual.

+Ranno Rannikmaa Yep. I cut the cord from Dish last week due to more B.S. "contract disputes" with Viacom. Much more interesting and REAL unscripted videos here on KZbin for whatever niche of entertainment you're in to. I hope Eric NEVER goes with any network. Quite a few KZbinrs I watch have been approached by networks and they all have told the networks to get lost.

+Sean Spring Welcome to the fold, remember to also fight and sign any petitions that keep the internet free and companies with their dirty grubby fingers out of our pie. If you want things to stay as they are (cool internet with cool people) you've got to fight for it. Otherwise, it's going to be TV2.0 only twice as fast, because once they start, they don't stop.

Dealt with the 2005 Acura TL Engine replacement few months ago as well. Same engine, auto transmission though, managed to get it out from the top too without taking the stub frame so didn't need to deal much with the rack related stuff. Phew. Great video Eric, you're my inspiration for following my passion and being a mechanic.

"Go ahead, try and slow me down" Good attitude! Wish it's one I remembered more often because having done a gearbox replacement at home on the floor (cradle out method) on an AWD car recently I definitely let some stuff slow me down! Got it done in the end though. I did wonder to myself what a pro does to keep themselves moving forward though because inevitably stuff comes up that can waste hours.

+EricTheCarGuy I have a question, on an Acura TLX with a DCT if they were to replace the transmission, would the torque converter be part of it? or is that a separate component that wouldn't go also? (their dct includes a torque converter)
@ericthecarguy

+Henry Pacheco Most reman transmissions come with torque converters. It's rare that they don't.
@henrypacheco9048
@henrypacheco9048 8 жыл бұрын
+EricTheCarGuy yes but a DCT normally doesn't use a torque converter, Acura added it for smooth low speed and stop and go that was the reason for the question, is it still part of the transmission and would it get replaced together?

Hey Eric, I had and 05 Acura TL with the automatic and a guy at my local Acura dealership told me how easy it was to take the motor only out the top. The front motor mount mounts to the engine and transmission so if you just take the bolt out that goes in the trans the motor slips right out while leaving the transmission in the car. In your case I dont think you could clear the clutch since thats a manual. Just a tip for the automatic guys and gals.

I love that impacts are to prevent technicians from using breaker bars, yet sometimes you can hammer at a nut or bolt for 5 mins with an impact and nothing will happen but you go and grab a 1/2 inch breaker bar and you get that satisfying crack sound of that bolt or nut breaking loose

Honestly, I did the transmission on my 05 Honda Accord. First time, so i realized real estate is a great have for the first time. I removed everything. Bagged and labeled of nuts and bolts for part/location...everything. Parts housed separately from Fasteners. Took some time but at reassembly had everything which was an added advantage. Perfect! Bags need zip ties so nothing falls out, but other than that was a fantastic. Eric have to disagree with the torquing comment, it does take time, but well worth the effort.

I used to work for a quick lube, they told me not to change the drain plug unless it was necessary. You wouldn't believe how many times I had to change it out cause the drain plug was either stripped (threads or head) from other quick lubes. There was one time someone pulled in and had a spark plug as a drain plug, that was an interesting conversation, their were even a few oil pans we wouldn't touch cause they looked like they were about to disintegrate from a bump.

My car........even the color is the same (G516P)..... I've got 180,000+ miles but the engine runs like new (changed all engine + tranny mounts & treat it with Mobil-1 0W-20 Extended Perf; the owner's manual & the oil filler cap recommends 5W-20 but the dealer's latest chart has changed to 0W-20). Did the clutch recently (turned out that the clutch disk was well within the limit, but as I am the 4th owner and it was the original clutch, I wanted to change it. What a PITA to do the job on the TL). The 2005 model seems to have trouble with the 3rd gear, but my 2004 does not have the issue. I am running on AC Delco's tranny fluid but no noticeable changes as compared to genuine Honda fluid. I'm not worried about my engine, but sometime down the road I may have to swap the tranny as the 1st gear often grinds at low RPM (the 3 previous owners & 14 months of driving in NYC left a good amount of metal shavings in the tranny fluid strainer). Still has about 100,000 miles, but eventually it would have to be done. I use Honda's ball joint separation tool for that lower ball joints (07AAF-SEPA100). My sleeves also came off and the manual tells you to replace the entire lower arm if that happens. Those lower arms are $$$ so I installed a large & thick washer. The torque for the nut should be 58-65 LBF per the manual.....

30:35 This is why I love Wix fuel filters. They usually come with new mounting hardware along with the filter. Almost nobody else does that. 32:30 Sometimes people ask me why I have so many pliers. I say that so long as auto makers install things in awkward locations, there will always be a need for a variety of pliers to reach those items.

Two video suggestions, if these haven't already been done: 1. About the circumstances around any remarkable injuries Eric has sustained in working on cars, especially stupid mistakes we all make. For example, maybe he was checking the inside of a flat tire, with bare hands, and cut himself on the nail that caused the flat. 2. Would love to hear about the memorable mistakes Eric has made, esp. those that he made more than once, like forgetting to put in the engine oil drain plug, and finding out after he added a quart or two of oil! Thanks!

Old video to comment on I know but at 4:00 you referenced quick-lube shops. I work at a Jiffy lube and trust me, we try to use to the original plug and ONLY change the gasket every time. But when people bring their cars in with a about to round off/rounded off plug, we change them with "OEM" equivalents. Unfortunately some chevy/ford plugs are different sizes.
