GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!! 1. A suggestions on the high mileage engines. The spark plug may loosen a bit and then become slightly difficult to remove as you are threading it out. The old plug may have carbon build up on the threads inside the combustion chamber. Work that carbon off by threading the plug back into the head and then back out a few times. 2. It is 100 times easier to remove the front wheels and wheel well liners. It gives you amazing access to the plugs and wires from the wheel well. Saves the ribs! 3. We see a number of people come in to our shop after installing non-Delco plugs with a misfire code. These LS based engines (4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.2) like the Delco iridium plugs and GM plug wires. You can buy them online for same price as aftermarket parts. BTW we are NOT a GM shop. 4. Its also a good time to make sure you see ALL the exhaust manifold bolts are in place. These bolts tend to snap off from the normal heat and cool cycle of the exhaust. If they are missing you want to replace them soon, otherwise the manifold will warp and cost more $$$ to repair. There are videos of people replacing these bolts. I like to replace them at 100K miles with a stainless ARP stud and nut set, then you never have the problem again.

Thank you for great comment. #1, 100% agree which is why its important to put the anti seize grease when installing the new plugs. As far as #2, only reason I had even the slightest issue was due to a 4" lift but had I not had that, it would have been a breeze. I thought about removing the front sheets and wheel well liners but didn't have my jack available at the time due to my buddy borrowing it. It wasn't difficult at all the way i did it but thats a matter of opinion i guess. #3, my LS didn't have any issues after my installation. Truck is sold so I can't confirm this is still the case.

Your body lift made the back passenger side plug a lot easier to get to. My stock truck had a heat shield directly across from the plug making the shortest extension too long. That plug was also different than the rest because whoever changed the plugs last gave up and left the old one in.

Suggestion for getting plugs back in is to use a small piece of vacuum tubing 4-6 inches long to help thread in the plug
@blainwilson79375 жыл бұрын
@Drake Bliss Your comment helped me come up with a washing machine hose and I cut it today in a 4" piece and I couldn't have got them threaded without it. Thanks
@arthansen84003 жыл бұрын
Put the plug in the SP socket with the shortest extension you have and finger tighten it in. Remember the angle that the ext. had when removing to make sure it is going straight. Read the torque specs correctly (the Bosch box said 15 ft/lbs) but otherwise a good vid.
@DrakeBliss3 жыл бұрын
@@arthansen8400 My method avoids cross threading the plug, a real nightmare if that occurs
@arthansen84003 жыл бұрын
@@DrakeBliss I don't disagree however the short ext. is already there and you can't put enough torque on it by hand to start a cross thread. He also put anti-seize on the threads which is a no-no with plated plugs.

@gig7779 жыл бұрын
Oh, one other thing. As recommended by Drake Bliss, I used a piece of tubing, not vacuum tubing, but just clear vinyl tubing that I had laying around, to attach to the end of the plug while installing the new one. It holds tight enough that you can pretty much thread the plug in the whole way. This trick worked great.

The reason checking the gap is recommended is because they rattle in their box. If they get hit with a sharp enough drop it can close that gap and you won't get proper ignition once it gets a little gummed up.

I finally found the right video...Thanks for your upload. How hard was it to pull the aluminum sleeves off in such a small space? Did u use pliers for that? Thanks again!
@jbmonty0811 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I am realizing I should have addressed that more due to the questions I have received... Yes, depending on how long its been from your last plugs change, the aluminum sleeves can be a little snug and difficult to get off. I definately used pliers for that. They make a specific tool for it but they SUCK.. They are too big and being in such a tight/small area.. I don't recommend at all. The best part is the sleeves are in fact aluminum and so they are very easy bend back or reshape once you pull then off.
@Diallo2686 жыл бұрын
you always want to check your gaps. Sometimes they can get bent slightly when shipped and handled. Also check the engine specs for gap not the box.
@randalwc5 жыл бұрын
I agree, this has bit me more than once...and it just takes a second to check...those plugs are loose in that little cardboard box and can get banged on the end by a warehouse or shipping worker, or they could have been gapped at the end of the shift on a Friday.
@johntube25259 жыл бұрын
Sorry for not checking back until now. I finally just used the channel lock pliers to pull on the aluminum protector and yea it was a bitch to pull the protector off, but eventually the protector and wire come off together. It is a little easier if you can use something to pry the channel locks with instead of just a straight pull. Also if you can grab enough of the wire with your hands and twist it a little to break the bond of wire to plug it seemed to help, but eventually all wires and protectors came off in tack and I just used my old wires as they were not brittle or cracked and I did not break any of them. I did buy the Autozone $1.49 small package of dielectric spark plug boot protector and put it on the new plugs and inside the wire connector and after putting that stuff on and pulling the wire off the new plugs a few times befor putting the new plugs into the motor it became easier and easier to take the wire off the plug. I am confident if I ever do this again it will be easier with the dielectric gupp now on the plugs. Also used the small $1.49 package of thread magic Anti-Seize on the plug threads. Great video Joseph!

Did you ever figure out what the mpg difference was Joe? That's what I was originally looking for was information on was the outcome and mpg difference. I'm about to change my plugs tonight before I go on a trip for vacation and it unfortunately cost me about 350$ round trip so I'm hoping to save a buck by getting them done before I leave. They have never been changed. I'm the 2nd owner, my mom being the first and it's a 04' Tahoe Z71 with 134k on it and was NEVER taken over 60 mph when she had it (cobwebs hahaha) so I know it will make a huge difference.

@jbmonty0810 жыл бұрын
Great questions and I wish I had a better explanation rather than relying on my local Autozone store. I recommend going to the older seasoned guy when getting recommendations. No offense to younger guys but I like seniority and respect experience. The plugs were looked up in the computer and the wires were decided after looking at a few other brands. I'm a true believer in you get what you pay for. I went with the Bosch wires due to their length which were longer than other brands.
@jaxon25810 жыл бұрын
Joseph Montgomery I'm pretty sure you'll want shorter wires, less resistance. It probably won't be a big difference for the vortecs since they are a bit of a weak engine to begin with but if it's heavily nodded or an engine pushing serious horsepower then short is usually better

Yes, my knock sensor code once reset never came back so I was fortunate this fixed the issue. I would highly recommend doing this before replacing your knock sensors if its been a long time since the last change. It can be very costly to replace the knock sensors and although can be done yourself, a lot of people don't have the time or the tools to do it and it can be a little intimidating also.

At the end you mention you cleared the codes. I assume you have your own code scanner? What if I don't have a code scanner. Is it necessary to clear it? Will the check engine light go off by itself when the new plugs are in?
@upthereinthesky9 жыл бұрын
MrDannyboy808 You can clear the codes by disconnecting the negative battery cable for a half hour or so. Depending upon your state rules, even though the Check Engine light is extinguished, your vehicle may fail state inspection until the engine has been through sufficient cycles for the computer to be satisfied.
@MrDannyboy8089 жыл бұрын
upthereinthesky Ok. Replaced the plugs and wires this past weekend. I live in Phoenix, AZ. Not fun at all working on it in 105+ degree weather. That last plug on the left cylinder 8 was a pain to reach and get out. I had the battery terminals removed and the engine light went out after the whole job was done. Thanks Also did you have problems with your AC blowing hot air all of a sudden while driving?
@upthereinthesky9 жыл бұрын
There also exists the possibility the check engine light could recur, after the vehicle goes through the required warm/cool cycles, if you haven't fixed the cause of the problem. Which, you probably have! RE: A/C problem: No, I haven't had that happen. Don't know too much about that system. But, possibly an intermittent fuse?
@jbmonty089 жыл бұрын
MrDannyboy808 I appreciate all the comments and discussions regardless if I'm replying to all or not. Yes, i have my own code scanner but i didn't for the longest time and all you need to do it go to any auto parts store and they should read the code for you. Some won't clear the code for you but most will if you just ask them to and tell them you already fixed the issue.

Because the stock equipment was either straight copper or platinum, they updated these engines to iridium but in 2013 they switched back to platinum due to the vortec not running so well at idle with iridium. My 4.8 had a terrible idle on iridium plugs

I have read many sites that say the iridums gave them bad milage and they switched back to double platinums and it ran good . There is a TSB on plugs that says use double platinum on silverados from 03 -06 and some 07's and 07 and up get iridums. Im so confused , I guess Ill find out after I install um . you were using 8104's . mine are 41-962. I got a 2003 silverado ,

Ed Yager Im unaware of this and only went with what was told to me as the specs required. I can also tell you from only personal experiences that my truck ran like garbage with the platinum plugs but ran smooth and great with the Iridium plugs.

I am having trouble removing the wires. 130000 miles and stock wires and plugs. I wish you had spent a little more time on removing the wires. Do you use the channel lock pliers to pull the aluminum protector off, and then slide it up the wire so you can then see and pull hard an the wire rubber cover for the plugs. It seems like the rubber cover just stretches and stretches, but doesn't come off and I am afraid I am going to break it on the plug and then what? I think I can just pry the other end of the wire off the engine part, but really struggling with the plug end of the wire.

I did that exact thing. If the wire breaks then no worries because then you can just use your pliers to grab the head and pop right off. I used my pliers for everything regardless so no issues. Trust me though, your issues with removing the aluminum protectors off is nothing new. I had a couple bloody knuckles because of that.

New spark plugs have an anti sieze coating on then and do not recommend using it. Still, thanks for the video.
