With worsening arthritis, I started looking at plug wire / boot removal tools to make next week's plug replacement easier on my '05 Silverado 5.3. Reading all of the reviews, it appears that most (if not ALL) of those tools are useless junk. I'm glad I saw this before wasting any money on any of them. Thank you, Sir!

Man, I'm so glad this was able to help you!

Brilliant. Thank you Sir. I have been screwing around trying all kinds of ideas to pull off those heat shields and boots with no success. It is so difficult because there is no way to get a good grip or enough leverage without destroying the thing. I knew somebody smarter than me would have a video on KZbin. You have made my otherwise useless day.

That looks like one of the better tips I've seen.

Thanks for your tip appreciate it awesome now if I knew that before I worked on this vehicle I wouldn't have to buy two new more heat shields for the spark plugs

Great tip! Mine were stuck on so tight that I broke them apart and took them off chunk by chuck. Used this trick on the passengers side and they came out no problem using the clamp and a pry bar!

That's great! Glad it worked.

Sometimes those GM plug wires with the metal heatshield ends are SUPER HARD to get off! The best way to get them off, that I found, is to snap a small pair of needle nose vicegrips onto the edge of the heatshield. That gives you a better hold than your fingers and thumbs can ever do. You can even get a large size pry bar in there to push against the ends of the vicegrips. Sometimes prying with one hand, and shaking and yanking the vicegrips with the other hand are what it takes. They can be a real bugger to get off!!! Be sure to grease them up real good with dialectric grease or the likes before reinstallation.

Good idea. I just threw my hands up and said "F it" a little earlier after wrestling with headlight and battery replacement under this Florida sun...didn't feel like fighting with the spark plug wire removal. Next Friday, the spark plugs and the oil change gets it.

Did you get it done? How'd it go?
@leh38273 жыл бұрын
Will try this one thanks. Good lookin idea, and then spray it up good with silly lube upon reinstallation. Maybe put a swipe of anti seize on the new plug threads.

Glad it helped! I'm not a mechanic, but I play one on KZbin! 😂 I've saved thousands of dollars doing simple repairs like this. Having searched for tutorial videos myself, I figured I'd post one that I thought would help people having the same problem.

Just changed the plugs on my 2003 Yukon. I jus gently twisted the rubber boot, and was able grab the heat shield and pull it off, even the hated #8 plug, which wasn’t that bad. There were 3 of those that were tough and with those I was able to grab the skirt of that shield with some small needle nose pliers and work them off. Great idea though for sure. Love the cool solutions on the “tube” that help others.
