Enjoyed your video, but I watched it mainly to see how you removed that cap off the old ball joint in order to remove it. It's that part that you didn't filim, lol. Thanks, your video was still very helpful. I'm working on a 05 Durango which is basically the same with some minor differences.

Hi, yes the ball joint the top of the ball joint normally doesn't have to be removed in order to remove the ball joint. However, in this particular case I had to to make it easier to remove the ball joint because ball joint press wasn't doing anything and I didn't want to break it or damage it and I was basically looking for a better way to do the job. The what I did was basically just cut the top of the ball joint off with an angle grinder in a simple metal cutting blade. That's all I did and I still had the heat. Yeah that's what I did and think I had to heat the ball joint too in order to get it out. So all of that is just to get the ball joint out. Okay that was that was a end to a means All right so that's all that was. But I really appreciate your comment and thank you very much. Hey thank you for watching and thank you for your comments. As to your question, I didn't show the actual grinding because I do show the the part that I cut off off the top of the ball joint You can also grind that off if you wanted to. All you got to do is just be careful. Don't grind into the control arm itself. The only reason I ground and cut that top of that ball joint off is because it was starting to flare out and mushroom out and was making removing the ball joint even harder. Mine had rusted into the control arm just a little bit All you got to do is just be careful and just grind down the part of the Ball joint sticks up above the control arm. You just want to grind that down so that it doesn't mushroom or flare out

Also would it be possible to not take off the brake caliper, and not remove the upper ball joint and just swing them out of the way, supporting them on something out of the way to replace the lower ball joint? Have my ball joints on order from Detroit axle it may try to do that but still doesn't look too bad doing it your way. Oh by the way, thank you for uploading this your video is the only one I found that deals with two-wheel drive everything else I found is 4 wheel drive

Hey, thank you for watching the video and thank you for your comments. As for not removing the spindle, that is a really good idea. If you're just replacing the lower ball joints, yes, you can support the spindle and the upper control arm. Most likely I'm going to say probably using like ratchet straps or something or something like that? Basically tied up the spindle and upper control arm assembly out of the way. However, do be aware that in the video I had a lot of trouble getting that ball joint out. It was very difficult so just be aware and with that you may have to remove that spindle and get it out of the way completely. If you do that, you can still tied up and leave your brake caliper still attached and probably use something like again ratchet straps. Any further questions feel free to ask thank you

First of all, thank you for watching the video. Really appreciate it but one of the things you got to keep in mind is you have to use a lot of force. It's a lot of grunt work and sometimes you have to think outside the box like what I did on mine cuz some people are like well. If you just use the press and the ball joint comes out. It's no big deal but sometimes you got rust and you got other conditions that can add to the problems and make the job even worse. So sometimes you have to go and you have to be a little more creative and cut the top off the ball joint and heat the control arm piece and all of this

@@slantfish65sd oh trust me this ain't my first time it's just been a long time since I used one of these and of course it takes for us and out-of-the-box thinking because that thing does not sit flush unless you grind off those little edges of the lower control arm some of those ball joint came with that whole piece and you have to get rid of those rivets one time I was in a situation where all I had was a chisel and a small bulk small sledgehammer it took me about 8 hours to chisel those rivets off that was some grunt work I must have swung that little Hammer about a thousand times that day but anyway we live and we learn if I had to do another ball joint tomorrow it'd take about a third of the time I just hadn't used once in awhile thank you again for the refresher course and everything came out the sway bar link bushings they were so bad they separated from the little ball joint but anyway once again thank you so much be safe and God bless awesome video I was literally sitting at the truck with that press in my hand once I read it I took care of business LOL peace and love

@@slantfish65sd and another thing that I sort of learned is when you doing the sway bar link bushings just let the whole sway bar loose from the frame one time I did it just one side and of course you got to pry and all that to get it on there but even for one I loosen the sway bar link all the way the sway bar arm anyway okay I'll shut up LOL peace and love thank you so much

You don’t need to grind off the “tabs”. Use the right lower cup and it pops right out

I agree with you entirely. However, I did not have the right correct lower cup and not only that the top of the ball joint swelled and mushroomed out. So that's why I was cutting the top of the ball joint off. Lots of times when you're wrenching on stuff, things don't always go according to plan

The whole purpose of making this video was to show you how to replace the lower ball joint lower ball joint on this particular truck was worn out. The reason why I ground the top actually cut the top of the ball joint off was because it got mushroomed out and it was going to be hard for it to go through the lower control arm to get it out of the lower control arm

I don't understand the most important part in this whole video probably the part everybody struggles with on the lower ball joint and you don't show it and you show everything else. You know the part where you have to pop the lower ball joint out I don't understand how you put this whole video out and you don't show the hardest part

I explained in the video that you have to use heat on the surrounding metal that surrounds the ball joint and then you can push the ball joint out. But you also have to sometimes cut the top of the ball joint off. I showed this okay. I'm sorry if you can't pick up on it
