Great job on this roof leak. As someone who has worked his entire life in construction and troubleshooting leaks in houses and commercial buildings, you nailed it. Removing old caulking is the correct way to fix any leak is first. Using the correct sealant is #2. Most people take the easy way and lay more caulking on top of failing caulking hoping it fixes the issue. Word to the wise. If the original sealant is leaking, its not bonded to the surface, and the new layer of sealant wont be bonded as well. Remove the old sealant and thoroughly clean the surfaces to bond the new sealant. Also with the types of sealants out there, if you have to seal "flexible" joints, use a flexible sealant. Ive seen too many times where caulking cracks bcuz it cant flex enough when joints move too much as in cars or windows. Heat will stretch metals also causing cracks. A good polyurethane caulk on vehicles is best for flexing seams like wind shields, glass, and body seams.

Wow a 3 part video on this subject?! Pretty detailed video. Never knew these seals or welding points would crack. Got a 2001 2 months ago and rail season started here, so I got 2 spots this weak. Found small cracks as well. First though it was bad rubbers but the location felt off. Glad people make videos like these to show actual cause

1. Remove Roof Rack 2. Clean Channel 3. Air dry 4. Clean Seam 5. Purchase brake clean and 3m seam sealer or eqivalent 6. Install seam sealer and let dry 7. Water Test 8. Reinstall Rack 9. Drink a cold beverage

Looked all over you tube to find this. You nailed the common issue the correct way. That old factory seam sealer is cracking as its obviously past its service life. Great job. This is exactly how I will tackle my 2003 Pilot. 👍👍

I think you tried to stop the leak by applying silicone to the outside of the roof trim. Why did this not work? Or did it just not last for very long?

I have the problem in my 2004 Civic, but on the driver's spot near where the plastic pillar meets roof lining fabric, just above where your left arm would be if left hand was on the wheel. Water drip every 30 seconds when it rains hard.

How in the WORLD do you get the dang front and rear covers off to remove the roof rack?!
@airbier5 жыл бұрын
There's a small hole on the inside portion (facing the center of the roof) of the cover. Insert a screwdriver in the hole and press a metal tab. This will allow you to easily remove the cover without breaking the plastic.
