Fantastic technical explanation. Discovering the slight Vacuum on the in cylinder waveform and suspecting a intake valve timing problem was very intuitive! Great Job! Very informative! Keep up the Good Work!

Outstanding waveform analysis Tom. The fact that you caught it so clearly with the cranking waveform is super cool. I've not seen anyone do that before. Well worth remembering for either a burnt valve or timing issues. Well done sir! Thanks!

I don’t own all of these nice diagnostic tools, but after a head replacement I suspected the late intake-cam timing too (for the same reasons as you showed - tooth count and mark slightly off), after I kept getting the P0341 code, long starting, and very bad performance. My cam adjuster looked pretty worn too, so I will probably replace.Thanks for the carefull diagnosis and explanation; very interesting!

Good explanation & dissection of the waveform Tom! If you have the camshaft specs you can really get precise with the degrees.

Good Job Tom..Gotta love the transducers. Very helpful tool to have for sure. Just a helpful suggestion for ya.. Once you've figured out the 180 events in ms, which in this case was 158ms When you leap frog the cursors, all you have to do is look at the delta time for the next event rather having to add. Just makes it quicker that way. But...I'm sure you probably already knew that. Lol Keep up the great vids wolfman..Always enjoy seeing what your working on. Cheers

Yes. Good point. That would be confirmed with a cranking vacuum wave form as well.

Thats what the ecu does when cam sensor isn't working it sends fuel at valve closed which you would barely notice if at all.

Im sure i have this exact problem and im wondering if I can rotate the intake cam 1 tooth without removing the camshaft caps?
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it can be rotated a tooth. Tensioner needs to be compressed and held and Cams need to come out to adjust it properly.

a mechanical vacuum gauge would have been nice to see also ;) you did one on the first video, but it didn't seem to work too great, not very responsive or maybe the port you had it on. although it kind of showed high speed needle vibration.

The vacuum pull is being created because both valves are closed before the piston has reached BDC.
@ednewell18476 жыл бұрын
You are correct that the vacuum is created because of both valves being closed however the piston would be at TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke and begin traveling back down at the start of the intake event, the delayed (retarded) intake valve timing is what caused the vacuum pocket he depicted in the capture

snap on pressure transducer a a joke , you can see there how does not read atmospheric pressure goes on negatives of your scale , I had snap on change my 2 times , figure out the hose is the problem but guess what snap on does no sell hose , regular compression hose simple does not work with snap on transducer, fluke pv 350 reads ok very noisy signal , to be used with snap on scope , good with Pico because you can adjust the filter amount, I got other transducer from Russia and the signal is so clean and accurate for $130 can be used with snap on or any thing, on the wave for sample you took there there is not way to know if you had plug cat or restriction on your exhaust valve, nice job men, unfortunately when I call for support to snap on they make me thing like I do not what I am doing even when I told them about 2 more brands of transducer reading ok. thank you for sharing

@PositiveLeadDiagnostics6 жыл бұрын
Where can you see that
@haywardsautomotive61566 жыл бұрын
Yep I'm curious also.
@chrismartino90786 жыл бұрын
The exhaust pocket after the power stroke. During cranking there should. Be no vacuum there. What you're seeing is pressure leaking out while both valves are closed and the piston is up. When it goes back down to the exhaust stroke, there is less air there, therefore a slight vacuum. You actually put your cursor on it when you were lining everything up. The pressure towers weren't symmetrical. On a cranking waveform the center between the two towers should be kinda flat. .
@haywardsautomotive61566 жыл бұрын
What time frame are you looking at? If the exhaust valve was leaking there would be no pocket at all b/c atmospheric pressure would be entering the cylinder thru the leaking exhaust valve. If you have a valve pocket that actually means both valves are sealing and is governed by valve timing & cranking speed which is why it should be done with a battery charger connected to get the same reading if doing multiple cylinders. Pico has great waveforms. Also if was running compression with a leaking exhaust valve the pockets would not be symmetrical and the exhaust pocket after the power stroke would be much higher.
@chrismartino90786 жыл бұрын
The exhaust valve isn't blown out otherwise there would be no compression. But under cranking, during the compression stroke the pressurized air gets pushed out a little bit. Since there is no combustion, if you move a piston up and back down with the valves closed, you will have the same amount of air. In this case some leaked out and when the piston went to bottom dead center, there was less air in the cylinder than when it started. Resulting in a vacuum. Eric o. On south main auto channel did a video on this explaining it better than I can

Iatn.net may be usefull for getting a known good wave form. Other than that u could request some from Pico user. U will just need to download the software which is free.
