I'll show you step-by-step how to replace the rotors and brake pads on a 2006 Ford Mustang V6. The tutorial is applicable for all 5th generation mustangs between the years 2005 - 2010. It should be fairly (if not exactly) similiar for all 5 lug configuration mustangs. Even though the work is being performed on a Mustang, the steps are fairly similiar for most all vehicles.
I'm an average person like you. I don't have formal automotive training, so f I can do it, you can do it!

Best damn video out there for this operation, quick, to the point and comprehensive step by step start to finish touching on all important areas along with ft lb torque for each stage of installation. Perfect video. 6 and half minutes long without all the bs talking about non relevant things or long windedness about nothing.

I just bought rotors, will install them tomorrow. But my concern is the little lock nut on the stud. If the new rotors dont come with it, do I reuse the old one or is it not necessary?
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 2 жыл бұрын
The lock tab is only put on at the factory to hold the rotor in place during vehicle assembly. It’s not necessary when replacing the rotor since the wheel is what holds it in place. At the factory, the wheel doesn’t go on at the same time as the rotor so the tab holds it in place so it doesn’t fall off.

is there any pistons you have to push in like the ones on the rear caliper
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 5 жыл бұрын
Cam Valentine, yes you do. Great question. Mustangs require a special tool needed to compress the piston. Your local autozone probably has the tool you can rent for free.

@@DIYJeff It's not just Mustangs, but most cars from 1990ish+ require a special tool/trick. The rear piston rotates back into the housing. Its $20 on Amazon or you can rent it from Autozone.

my 2013 gt with standard brakes has 55k miles right now. I dont have any brake noise, can i just replace my pad and not rotor?
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 3 жыл бұрын
winkawak, the only reason to replace rotors is if there is excessive wear or deep scratches, or warping. With just 55k miles you should be fine with just new pads.

@Bob Keeler, ford makes a special tool that rotates it during compression. It won’t compress like a normal piston.

My suggestion would be to match them up to your existing rotors to see which one goes to which side. It has to do with the direction the rotor turns.

Why didn’t you have to use that tool for the piston?
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 4 жыл бұрын
@robert kollaritsch, you are correct! That is a part of the video that I forgot to film. Most pistons can be compressed by pressing an old break pad up against the piston and use a C clamp to compress it. But Mustangs do require a special caliper compressing tool that rotates the piston as it compresses it. Thanks for pointing that out.

DIY Jeff, I only mentioned using that tool because I visited other sites concerning this issue, could you tell me why this tool has to be used? I want to try to do this to my car. Thanks for your informative videos.
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 4 жыл бұрын
robert kollaritsch, the tool has little notches in it that fit into the caliper piston because you can’t just push the piston in. The tool marries itself to the piston and turns it in a circle while pushing it in. You can find the tool pretty cheap on eBay or Amazon.
@robertkollaritsch5842
@robertkollaritsch5842 4 жыл бұрын
DIY Jeff hi Jeff, when piston is pushed in , do the notches on caliper matter? Thanks Jeff
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 4 жыл бұрын
@robert kollaritsch, the notches in the piston will be set in the correct position when it's completely pressed in. So to answer your question, the notches in the piston don't matter what orientation they are in. There aren't any notches in the caliper itself.

@@DIYJeff i compressed my pistons last night with the old pad and a clamp and they both compressed. Will they compress correctly without rotating with the special tool?
@DIYJeff
@DIYJeff 2 жыл бұрын
@@toocoolfortheroom380, If you didn't rotate the caliper with the tool I'm not sure how it would have compressed. You'll want to make sure the caliper is working correctly. Without having it on the rotor, press the brakes and make sure it pushes back out. Maybe it also depends on the year of your vehicle. You may not have a rotating piston. I can tell you I tried with all my might to compress the piston with a C clamp and the old pad until I just gave up, did some research, and found that ford's rotate.

@@DIYJeff i asked my bud and he said it's likely the rear brakes that need spun in as some of them have a drum system embedded in the calipers. Mine is an 09 and doesn't require the special tool for the front.👍
