In this video I walk through the installation of a K&N Part Number (P/N) 63-9025 Cold Air Intake (C.A.I.) on my 2011 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6. This fits 2005-2011 Tacoma's with the same engine.
But 1st, we take a decibel (dB) meter reading, a.k.a. "Loudness test" with the stock intake at startup, at idle, and revving the throttle up to 3,000 (3k) and 4,000 (4k) Revolutions Per Minute (RPM's). This gives you a reference of the increase in loudness of the intake once we install the Cold Air Intake. We made sure to limit the variables in this test by checking the dB without the engine running (40dB), at startup the engine was cool and the outside temperature hadn't changed, and during the testing the engine was revved to 3k and 4k RPM once the engine had idled.
According to our dB test, the dB increased by about 10dB's at above 3k RPM's. This means the actual "loudness" of the engine has increased. With the stock intake removed and the K&N intake installed, there is now a more direct, open line to the front of the throttle body itself. When the throttle body is more open in higher RPM's, the sound should continue to increase, but because I don't want to run my engine at redline sitting still, we didn't measure higher than 4k RPM's. Not completely comparable, the sounds off the front of the engine are also a LOT more noticeable. Hearing the sounds from the front of the engine doesn't equal an increase in dB. There is a difference in how the engine itself now sounds, but it isn't 1:1 to the dB increase. Just keep that in mind.
According to the dyno testing from K&N on the same engine I have in my 2011; the 4.0L V6, there is an increase in Horse Power (HP) by 10.33 and an increase in torque "acceleration" by 10.87. For the money, this is the best way to increase HP and torque. You won't get this much increase in a muffler ($100-$350+), you might get a little more than this from a full exhaust system ($600-$1k+), you'd definitely get more than this with a programmer on an "extreme" type mode ($500-800+), and you'll never be able to compare this with the extreme amount of HP and torque you're going to gain from a supercharger or turbo ($3k-$6k+). For the price, this is the best increase in HP and torque and is also something you can do yourself. I'm fairly experienced with automotive repairs and maintenance and upgrades and I'd hesitate thinking about doing a turbo of supercharger myself. Even pulling the manifolds to replace the exhaust system header to muffler would be a big job. But a K&N C.A.I., you can do this!
In the video we also show a quick test run. We DID have a before video test run but somehow that data was lost. The test run in this video is after the intake install. I can tell you from driving this truck for almost a year now, the sound from the engine is NOTICEABLE from inside the cab. You can hear a better rumble when sitting, but the sound once you get into it on a launch or takeoff is absolute. There is no argument that a K&N C.A.I. doesn't increase the sound coming from the front of the engine. I can't vouch for other intake kits, I've only done K&N's. I did a K&N C.A.I. on a 1997 4.0L V6 Ford Ranger back in 2000, and it made a huge difference in the engine sound, a MASSIVE increase in throttle response, and noticeable gains in HP and torque.
That brings me to explain throttle response. Throttle response as I mentioned in the video is how quickly the engine responds to pushing the gas pedal in. It's the length of time it takes when you mash the gas pedal down to when you hear the engine rev. Tacoma's are known for having a big lag between pushing the gas and the engine revving (responding) to the pedal being pushed. A C.A.I. decreases the time between the pedal being pushed and the engine responding (revving). Meaning it increased throttle response. This is true with the K&N Cold Air Intake system. There is a noticeable increase when comparing the pedal being pushed and the engine responding with the engine stock vs this K&N C.A.I. installed.
I recommend this product!
