Was looking for this sort of comment. It's late August and Tropical Storm Laura is a ragged, disorganized mess next to Puerto Rico. TD14 looks like an old cold front. Most of the storms this year barely registered as storms. One of them was literally named, and became extra-tropical by the time I went to lunch. 2005 wasn't just infamous for the quantity of storms. It was that it kept producing monsters, and storms that didn't behave "normally."

2005 was basically the solid definition of "terrible" regarding an Atlantic hurricane season; pretty much every atmospheric and oceanic condition allowed it to spit out so many nasty storms (and storms in general). However, it is only a matter of time before we get a season that rivals 2005 or (hopefully not) is even worse.

2020 may do it. Earliest E named storm on July 5 formed. Earliest F and G named storm is also possible. Wind shear is starting to lower with little Saharan dust.

I went through Irene and it was a nightmare. We had to evacuate to a shelter and it was very uncomfortable at that place. We got flooding and power outages along with damage to trees and power lines. Could it have been worse? Absolutely. Irene could have hit us as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, causing catastrophic flooding and widespread damage. But, as is, she has caused enough problems and headaches.

Thats because the list cycles yearly (6 years). After 2005 the same list was used in 2011 and then 6 years later it was used again in 2017, so you wont see another arlene until 2023

That storm was missed operationally, and was only discovered in post-season analysis. Thus, it remained unnamed. Although, I'm not sure why this video refers to it as "None" instead of just "unnamed".

List 3 used to be pathetic. It didn’t have a retired name in the first 3 seasons List 3 was used, but then 1999 (Floyd, Lenny), 2005 (Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan, Wilma), 2011 (Irene), and 2017 (Harvey, Irma, Maria, Nate) happened.
