Mine is a manual 2004 90 hp 265,000 km/165,000 m; I replaced pads and discs, alternator and suspension bushes and front shocks. EGR deleted. Cam belt will be done next week. Slight roof rail leak sealed with silicone. V tiny bits of rust on rear wheel arch but underneath is clean. Mechanics love it because it is sooooo easy to work on and with regular maintenance the engine WILL continue well in excess of 500,000 km/310,000 m. There are thousands of them on the road so they're not expensive to buy a good one and the parts are cheap and easily available. It has a massive hatch back space with the rear seats folded. I've put all-season tyres on so it's quite secure on poor surfaces. Although it's a dull heavy car, it can be quite amusing to hustle its bulk through tight corners and it takes a hell of a lot to get any noise out of the tyres! It'll easily do 17-18 kpl/50 mpg on a long steady drive. Not the quietest car but nice firm seats mean long distances (northern England to southern France) are very comfortable. Easily one of the best cheap vehicle solutions on the market.

Everything above I can agree with. Also have a 2004 ALH 90hp 5 speed manual. 94hp and 205nm when taken to a rolling road 3 out of 4 window regulators replaced now. EGR delete & 2.5" turbo back decat exhaust Regular 55/60mpg tanks driving gently. Utterly transformed my driving once I got this car. An itch I wanted to scratch for a long time and have no regrets

Hey, is the car well protected from the outdoor sounds? Is it loud inside the cabin at high speed? I would also like to know if the audio system is any good. Thanks :)
@ChillDrive5 жыл бұрын
really good comment, because the sound proof is really poor. If you usually drive faster than 120km/h you would really start to think about extra soundproof (i guarantee). audio quality is ok as this segment car. All in all, it's a good, reliable car.
@philje1235 жыл бұрын
I found it fairly quiet even at high speeds. I had an elegance model. It has carpet in the wheel arches so there is little noise driving in the wet. I found tyres made a massive difference. The factory Bridgestone tyres were super noisy compared to the Goodyear's I fitted. The stereo is OK but I noticed a huge improvement when I fitted the Columbus Sat-nav (RNS 510) as I think it has a better amplifier.

This particular model based on Golf V-platform is one of the most cost effecient cars, furthermore the 1.9/105hp tdi probably the most reliable engine VW-group came up with in recent years. Used ones on the market today commonly come along with milages like 250.000, 300.000 frequently even 400.000 km (~ 250.000 mls.). MPG is about 30 - 40 depending of driving mode

@philje1235 жыл бұрын
The 6 speed as actually very reliable. It uses dual clutches that are lubricated with oil so last a very long time. This also make parking easy as they can slip more compared to the dry clutches of 7 speed. Just as long as the gear oil and filter is changed as per the schedule there should be no issues.

I am getting old (lol) and more prefer automatic. When the engine is weak like this one, you don't have to shift a lot (haha). And you know... It's XXI century, car is not for fun drives, so automatic helps to do more stuff just driving. Hug from Lithuania, thanks for a nice comment!
@Dokker625 жыл бұрын
VW manuals are definitely not better than a proper dsg. Volkswagen didn't make any fine shifting manual gearbox so far and probably never will.
