I bought a 2005 Sequoia a month ago. Had timing belt, tune-up, new tires, and all kinds of stuff done right away. Then it went in limp mode where if I floored the gas, the rpms would go up, but it wasn't accelerating. Wouldn't accelerate up hills. Took it to shop, they did the 2nd air pump replacement whatever for $900. Two days later it is back in limp mode and my research has led me here. I'm hoping you just saved my bacon and this is the fix. I just bought an 05 Sequoia junker for a donor car a few days and now I hope it starts paying off.

I have an ‘05 Tundra that started doing the same thing. P0418 and P2445 codes. I’m a shade tree mechanic and this is my personal vehicle. At first when I cleared the codes it would be fine for 2 weeks to a month. Now I have to clear them daily to drive the truck. BUT once I clear it it runs like a dream. FYI THIS IS A DAILY DRIVER AND HAS 435K miles… considering trying a bypass kit. GREAT VIDEO!!!! I feel your pain brother!!

S & A Auto Repair I truly understand those type, too. They are the ones that can’t catch a break because everyone and everything is the reason that all the bad things happen to them. Don’t worry about those types they are in if for what they can get from whoever they can get it when they can for free. ( Dare I call them opportunist) They are bent that way and don’t see the value in an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure. Then there are those that appreciate people above things, like yourself, and try to help people by anticipating their needs as to be of your best and most authentic in your pursuit to help them. You are proof that honest people still exist in the world! You are just wired that way, plus you’re not the type to give up easily and is always willing to learn and tap into your potential! @faustogonzalez8397 Жыл бұрын
Great video, 1st as in any Automotive repair procedure you have to understand the complete components of the system and how they operate, as well as how they are controlled. That P1445 code should have alerted you of a Bank 2 (vacuum controlled check valve #2) was not operating correctly. And as you determined the SAI Solenoid that controls the # 2 check valve was malfunctioning. Next, you could have put a hand held vacuum gauge on the output of the #2 Solenoid that feeds vacuum to the #2 check valve and you would have determined that there was no vacuum being routed to the #2 check valve. You could also use a Bidirectional Scanner that can take control of the SAI and activate it and monitor via the Air Pressure sensor in the Diverter valve, whether when the Air Pump is activated by the Scanner it monitors the pressure drop while both check valves are closed and then activates each check valve individually and monitors the air pressure to confirm overall air pump Operation (GOOD OR BAD) and also the Check valves whether they are good or bad. As far as Limp Mode/Safe Mode I don't know why that was designed to be activated when SAI codes are generated, so if there's multiple SAI codes generated, you're somewhat stranded on the Highway, like if you're on a long trip ??? Man that stinks, for goodness sakes the main purpose of this SAI system is to feed clean air to the cats on cold startups, to minimize the time required for Cats to reach efficient operating temperatures, therefore minimizing pollutants on startup ??

I feel your pain. That is a tough situation to be in. I hate when a customer asks for the worst case dollar figure. That is why we charge a diag fee. My takeaway: Don't give a worst case solution over the phone. Always verify the concern and gather some data before drawing any conclusions. A diag fee is worth the expense especially in these situations. Excellent information. Thanks for the vid.
@SAAutoRepair5 жыл бұрын
Hey Gary. I have no issues with charging a diag fee and neither does the customer. This was one of those situations where the customer happened to be here with another vehicle and asked "since I'm here" kind of things. He totally understood that it needed to be properly diagnosed. He was extremely cash poor and truck was in another state. So he decided to wait. Hence the snowball effect. Thanks for the positive feedback sir.

I might be too dumb to understand why Toyota’s strategy is to put you in “ Limp mode “ during the 3rd trip monitor,but I’m thinking for emission purposes to force you to fix it... If you just have the CEL on you might continue driving,if you’re in “ Limp mode “ then it’s a different story. Because secondary injection system should have nothing to do with drivability!
@SAAutoRepair5 жыл бұрын
I believe it's because if the valves are stuck open, exhaust gas is being pumped back into the engine compartment. From there it may find a way to the passenger compartment. Then follows the lawsuits. Thanks for the great question.
@robinacosta530 Жыл бұрын
Currently struggling with the P2445 code. Has anyone found the fix? I’ve added a new air pump and an air injection control driver. Mechanic states the 2 valves in the back open as needed, fuse isn’t blown and air is going through the vacuum valve as it should. But check engine light won’t go away. Pump works for a bit then quickly shuts off and triggers a check engine light. Anyone found a solution?

WWSKD (What would Scotty Kilmer do?) He’d tell the owner to get a cheap code reader and clear the codes before each trip because Toyotas are the best cars ever! Nice job! That’s the kind of diligence that actually gets cars fixed right. Even though you replaced a lot of parts, it wasn’t parts cannon gunnery because everything you replaced needed to be replaced. Happened to my Co worker and close friend we ended changing the pump and the valves and bingo it fixed it. And the symptoms are exactly like you described. And I bought the kit from Toyota cause like you I had been bit by this problem. My advice is to always research the google and see if there is common problem with you’re code. The sad thing is that you got no chance test drive the vehicle so you got sent the wrong way. The error is human we have all had problems where the customer sends you up the wrong path and there is now way to verify. I don’t think you did anything wrong with rebuilding the transmission although Toy transmissions in my opinion are pretty rock solid. Just sucks that this customer now thinks you are not a competent mechanic but hopefully he is an understanding person and can see the situation of having the vehicle not drivable made it hard to get to the root of the real problem. I am sure he will need brake rotors if the shifter cable and linkage got all rusty those rotors must have imprint of the pad on them another expense. All I can say for advise is to use the Google and research everything if in doubt. I replaced the whole kit being in the North Canada salt belt cause I got burned like you trying to save the customer money then getting bit with the customer not being happy more money has to get dropped into the same system you were working on. Then they talk bad about you and you know as well as everyone it takes seconds to loose business but takes years to get business. So this time when the co worker came to me with inj pump faults on his Toy Tacoma I just gave it to him and let him know the manufacturer recommends replacing all components it’s not cheap but I had been bitten before and that I could just do what was wrong but it could come back to get him. He agreed to changing everything. Of course I had not sold him on a transmission rebuild as in you’re case. Anyhow keep up never give up and love the videos and how you reply to most you’re comments. Feel like a brotherhood with you
@SAAutoRepair5 жыл бұрын
Customer is good with me and my work, so no worries there. He is very happy it got sorted and understands the "snowball" effect that was created by parking it for so long. I agree the issue may not have initially been the trans but the rebuild became necessary and justified. Just stinks it could have been avoided. I don't rely on Google as it tends to provide a lot of misleading info. That's not to say I don't get my fair share of bad info on the subscription based services I have access to. In the end, it's all good. Appreciate your kind words and support. Cheers and stay warm up there.
