I filmed replacing the spark plugs on a 2008 Hyundai Sonata with the 3.3 V6. It should be the same on 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 models.
You'll need 6 spark plugs (NGK 7854 is the OEM plug, I used a Bosch 8100), a plenum gasket set (Part# 037-4837 or MS19703), some thread locker and possibly some anti-seize.
For tools, you'll need a 10mm, 12mm and 14mm wrench, a spark plug tool, needle nose pliers and a small flathead screwdriver.
All in all, not that bad of a job. You could probably do it in 2 hours.
0:00 Intro
0:27 Parts
1:11 First 3 plugs
5:20 Getting at back 3 plugs
9:20 Gaskets and back 3 plugs
11:15 Reassembly
13:40 Testing, plastic cover replacement and final thoughts.
Disclaimer! If you mess up your car it isn't my fault! Don't do this if the video doesn't make sense to you! Sorry it is kind of dark sometimes, I need more lights!

ThAts how i felt, but i just watched and listened, and honestly i give it a 7/10 points taken away for lighting, and the fact you can tell this is the first time he did it on this car, some people like that fact, im indifferent, but it was a good video

Great video, this also covered a 2007 Azera. I had the "w" bracket passenger side and a 12mm bolt under the throttle body. I saved $400!. Great Stuff! I was also told there is a method to torquing the plenum down.

I appreciate your video. It helped me dig even deeper into the engine: I'm replacing the rear cylinder (valve) cover gasket (OEM p/n's: 22453-3C110 & 22453-3C120) in addition to the spark plugs. Bleh. For folks working on a 2006 Azera's Lambda MFi 3.8L v6, the plenum gasket (a.k.a., "surge tank gasket") is a different part than shown in this video. OEM p/n: 29215-3C301; BECK ARNLEY p/n: 037-4865).

Thanks so much for the info. I've been waiting for someone to have a video! The Dealer said of New Bern of N.C. said for a spark plugs to be changed will cost somewhat of $300. I say ok, and turn around and said, hell no! not my $300. plus?! So my car is past due, I wished they were done at 100,000 miles, but still runs good even at 121,700 miles. So now my wish is, they will get done very soon! Plus, don't believe the dealership at parts counter, You can't find trans fluid no other place than only the dealership! Found it at Wal-Mart by: Valvoline, Max Life ATF Also it's "Full Synthetic" It works Great! Have 3,000 miles with new fluid with no problems! I try to keep it changed every 50,000 to 55,000 miles. Just make sure it has the right specifications! My car is 2007 Hyundai Sonata v6 automatic 5 speed. I will say, the alternator is in a bad location! Sometimes valve cover likes leaks and then later on shorts out the alternator. Even replaced the gasket, 4-6 mo. later it wants to leak a little bit. Would be nice to have a special cover for the alternator. Any comments? ask me on, at Kik as: DoingSomethingFun
@jakejones5736
@jakejones5736 5 жыл бұрын
Just now saw your video. I replaced the valve cover gasket due to leaking as well; and I too was concerned with it drenching the alternator. Wouldn't ya know, several months later it leaked again. So the next time I had my mechanic friend replace it, and he used sealant at the front left joint. I'll be damned if it didn't leak AGAIN! Crappy Hyundai. So this time we opted to just put sealant on the outside. Did the trick, but the front cover is ALSO leaking.... LOTS! I may try to put sealant on the outside of it too since it works if there is no pressure forcing the oil past the gasket. Otherwise, I'd have to take half the engine apart!

Squirt a little Liquid Wrench or similar if you have corrosion between the plug and the head while taking it out. Never use anti-seize that isn't made explicitly for spark plugs as it must be conductive and use it sparingly.

I got a check engine light after I did mine. It was immediately when I turned the car on.. car runs way better and didn't have it before. I had somone clear the code And it was gone for a good while but came back. Everything is all hooked up idk what caused this ..

Seems like a ton of work just to change spark plugs. More specifically, 3 spark plugs. I don't know if you're familiar with changing the oil pressure switch/sensor for these cars, which seem to be a problem (just out of warranty if it is even covered by the warranty) for the V6s for Hyundai/Kia, but from other videos it seems it's basically everything you did plus also removing the lower plenum to get to the "valley" by the coolant pipe where the switch is. So definitely, if i change out the switch, i'm also going to change out the plugs as well...

I wouldn't mind doing this on my 2009 Sonata V6 limited(250 HP with 24-30 MPG) that has 230,000 miles for the past 11 years. Watching this on 05/20/2020 since the number three is misfiring on my car today. Have you driven a car over 230k miles with same spark plugs? I've been driving GMs for my life until I bought this nice car and No complaints here. I only have to change the fuel pump a couple of month ago and that's all I have done for 11 years other than general PMs. Never been in the shop yet. I'd love to support and drive American cars if they can make cars this good.
