I was a detailer/ valet at a Mercedes Dealer in 2004-2005 and the E55 AMG was my favorite car at the time. It embodied power and luxury and excess of the time. In fact ALL the AMG cars from that time were unbelievable and the CL 55 and CL 65 were the holy grail of unnecessary luxury and power. Those few years of Mercedes are and will always be the best ever.

I've been looking at E55 wagons. I don't really need the car, but wagon form factor would add nice tad of utility and reason for getting it. Running costs are pretty epic in my neck of woods with 2€/l gasoline, but that's the price of fun :D.

Mercedes has been producing, quite literally, the best cars money (a lot of it) can buy for some time. Look at the 6.3 liter 600 (W100) released in 1963 it had hydraulically powered windows, seats, sun-roof, boot lid, and automatically closing doors which were extremely quite and smooth even by today's standards. And an adjustable air suspension that let it cruise comfortably at 130 mph (it's top speed) as long as there was fuel in the tank.

I drove one of these not really knowing what it was beforehand, and this is coming from a bone stock 2005 Dodge Ram with a Cummins. This unassuming Benz took me and the old fart in the passenger seat from a standstill to a felony prison sentence quicker than I could have ever seen coming. I felt the wheels spin in the back and the computer catch itself before I could even realize what was happening. Humbled me as a driver.

ABC is not air suspension, its hydraulic suspension, air suspension was too plebeian even e class had it... ABC uses "regular" springs and dampers but instead of the top of the springs being mounted on the body there are hydraulic rams (between the body and the spring) that can compress the springs and raise and lower the vehicle, eliminate body roll (no need for sway bars) prevent brake dive etc. It is a grear system that needs some preventative maintenance, otherwise a big fault can easily total the cars it is fitted which makes people affraid of it. The new ferrari SUV just came out with a very similar system and it's still considered cutting edge.
@DrewLSsix
@DrewLSsix 5 ай бұрын
15ish years ago a tuner company was selling an aftermarket version of this suspension, iirc it used pneumatic rams and lacked much of the functionality of the merc system. It was basically just a way to get over speed bumps or go from slammed to drivable. Obviously the kit floundered in a market where kids shopped by least expensive, but it's always been a cool concept.

I own a 2001 e class with xenon headlights, dimming and warming mirrors, lumbar functions, rain sensing wipers, and calling features (although there is no phone present in the car). It's funny, my Daimler Chrysler era Ram is actually a delightful truck, not Mercedes-Benz level engineering, but Mercedes-Benz level durability. @@justinschmidt1202 and it's strange how step father they were. They didn't really care about how the newly adopted child acted, but as long as they were under the roof, they would follow house rules. I drove one of these at the dealership I worked at. I didn't get to act up in it, but I could feel it. And the styling is so underrated. I loved how the doors swung forward overlapping the fender as they opened and presented a chrome door jamb. The way it looks presenting the interior to you is just regal! I tried to get a picture of it back then to show to my friends using my Samsung flip phone of the time, but it just did not do it any justice. Even still, watching this high-quality video today, same black on black interior I drove... photos and videos do not do this car justice, you have to be there to really appreciate just how beautiful this car is in person, and feel just how nicely it drives.

@@TrevorClarke it's weird how these cars all seem to be purposefully designed in the interior controls to be as ergonomic as possible for driving manual, despite not many of them being sold in manual. It's the only car I've driven that has nearly every hand control the driver regularly needs accessible with the left hand, often even able to be manipulated without taking one's hand off the wheel. Right hand doesn't need to deal with much beyond the gears and the wheel when the left hand can deal with lights, wipers, signals, and cruise. Odd that a predominantly automatic car was designed this way, but it's a subtle thing I love. Heck, even the parking brake is operated by a fourth pedal like pickup trucks tend to have.

@@iceman5117 pretty much any m112/m113 mercedes is still being driven, not high Performance models like you mentioned, but still they regularly get over 300-400, even over 500k kms, which is a lot, no matter how you look at it, im interested to see how the m272/m273 will hold up, for now they seem to be good, more power and more less the same economy as the 112/113, a bit easier to maintain, everything on paper seems good except the intake manifold troubles they tend to give but if it happens, the Aftermarket has really good offerings to future proof them, the balance gear issue was not that big when you look at the numbers how many were made in the first few years, and by now, they are ripe - meaning that the engines that were affected were either recycled by now into some new engines or repaired in time so that is no longer an issue, everything else is up to a really good standard on them, and they seem to not have any issues, the c class in particular is probably the best bet for a good cheap and relatively fast car, with enough pull to get you through anything, and without complicated suspension/brake system like the bigger models, post 2005 models seem to be the best bet, even the diesels are still running around, which for an earlier common rail design is rare to see in europe, most of the others are already scrapped, while the Mercedes still keep on driving, the 320d is also pretty good, and the 1.9tdi is just another league of reliability, but not common rail rather something in between common rail and older indirect injection units (pumpe duse)

I have a W206 AMG C43. They got a claimed 402hp out of a closed deck 2.0 liter inline 4. Its performance numbers are close to this. It has the 48v MHEV system and a big Garrett GT2863 turbo with 30lb peak boost, that gets spun up by an electric motor. It all kicks in at the same time when you punch it. It’s a 3800 pound 4-door sedan that takes off like an EV and has rear wheel steering. AMG still has the tech.

The C215 has always been one of my dream cars. I remember seeing Pimp C standing next to his CL 500 in the Big Pimpin’ music video with the fancy stripper shaking her ass next to his suave silver coupe. The C215 was the first production car to feature Bi-Xenon headlights and so many other luxury features that came out much later on future lesser automobiles. I had the pleasure of driving the C217 Sonderklasse Coupe while I was in Miami last year. I wish that Daimler-Benz would bring back these large coupes. They are so nice. The Bentley Continental GT is running unopposed now with virtually no competition in sight now that the S-Class could is gone. It’s a shame we can’t have nice things like this nowadays.

In 2012 I bought a 2002 CL500. Not as powerful as CL55, but still rapid, and great at autobahn speeds. SUPER comfortable to drive long stints, the longest I did with my mate was 1700km in a day. And the car was just phenomenal. 10 years old and already falling apart, occasional active suspension warning on the dash and random miss shift on the gearbox etc would have cost thousands to fix, but everything else on the car made up for it. The Bose stereo is still the best I've had in any car, and very VERY loud when needed. It was the best and the worst car I've ever had, and I miss it dearly.

It is always hard to overstate just how nuts that engine was at that time. We now live in an era where 500hp V8's are shockingly normal, with supercars having 800-1000hp. The M113K came at a time when supercars had 400hp. And with 20 years of data after the fact, the M113k also proved to be dead reliable and cheap to maintain. We won't see such a combination again.

A few corrections from a previous owner here, already mentioned abc is hydraulic, they are 8 piston front callipers, the clutch enngages at 50% throttle or above 3000rpm (its entirely for fuel economy and it works), and the car is geared to do about 230 mph not 180. These would do in excess of 190mph derestricted. Otherwise great video!
