Wife's 2006 Volvo S40 T5 6spd manual had front end noise. Mainly on right side and when cold and turning right but also up an incline such as an on ramp. Replaced passenger CV Axle and lower control arms to no avail. Ended up being the top passenger side motor mount.

THANK YOU!!!! Our Passenger side axel booty blew out a while ago so we thought the U-joint was going out and making all the noise. We got it replaced ($200) and it was still making noise. The mechanic quoted us $1000 to replace the mount.... since he told me it was the mount I searched youtube and found your video... and now I can do it myself seeing how it isn't all that difficult and save $900.

This video just ended my frustration with the car. The volvo dealership was unable to find the bad part causing the noise, they have changed quite a lot of parts with no result. Found your video, bought the mount and now the sound is gone and I can finally enjoy my C70. Thank you !!!

Easy way to filter out if this is the issue is by applying both E-brake and regular brake while in gear, turning wheel (or not), and applying some gas. I was able to establish that my mount was bad as you still get the same feeling of the motor vibrating down onto frame. Since the vehicle is not in motion, you eliminate any suspension-drivetrain components!

Awesome!!! I came to the same conclusion on my dads S40, However I did not have to replace a bunch of stuff. When I looked at his motor mount, I wasn't sure how the thing was set up. So I did a search and found your video, and see that my issue is probably the same thing. Thanks for taking time to do the video!! I have posted a few myself, and I know how time consuming it is to shoot video and work on the car. Thanks Again!!

Good video. Ive got a noise on my 2006 volvo s40 and it sounds exactly what you described. Only makes the noise on acceleration or going over bumps, but its like a popping or thudding noise coming from that area. Ive already replaced my struts, lower control arms and my cv axle so i guess it comes down to that motor mount

RJ H, Sometimes I use mechanics and sometimes I work on my vehicle's myself. On my wife's S40 the mechanic said the noise was CV Axle first then control arm and after that he said he didn't know. That is when I did my own closer diagnosis and saw the motor rising up and turning more than normal as a friend let out clutch on an incline several times in forward and reverse up the hill. That is when I felt it was the motor mount over the strut was my last guess. I still need to replace struts but overall car has been good for two yrs. On side note I did have an intermittent stutter recently come up acted like water in the line, no engine light at first then later for high fuel rail pressures. Ended up needing warranted software update and fuel regulator sensor. Just FYI in case this comes up. The mileage is now 146k

If you car has an issue on right turns that gets worse when it is cold this part is your problem. I had it replaced and it fixed my issue entirely, if you do not replace it in time it will damage your axel and it will have to be replaced as well

Thanks for the input. I did it backwards and replaced the axle first in error. I think if the CV boots stay in tact that the axles normally do okay. once they break open and contaminants get in they go downhill.

I need to get mine replaced and I'm having quite a bit of trouble finding good instructions on how to replace the axle (passenger front) with a manual transmission. I'm having a similar issue with a 2004.5 S40 T5 that I recently bought for my son. This might be the culprit as the RH CV axle had a torn boot and after replacing it the noise remains. Happens on acceleration after turning right and sometimes accelerating in a straight line, mainly when it is colder. His is an ATM, but your symptoms sound almost the same, makes a grinding/clunking noise from the right side that dissipates as you continue forward.

A friend had this issue, and I specifically told him to check the motor mounts, he said he took it to the shop and replaced a ton of parts including the axles and motor mounts. still kept making the noise so out of frustration he put it up for sale for dirt cheap and I ended up buying it. Checked that specific motor mount and it's destroyed, cracked, dirty, has never even been touched. $50 part and an hour later and the car is good to go. I can only imagine how he feels now paying over 2 grand in "repairs" and having no repairs done. Oh and yes the mechanic ended up telling him (after replacing) all these unnecessary parts that it is most likely a transmission issue and he will need to replace the transmission.

Well, I'm glad I saw this video and then once I read Clate Mcgehee's comment that was the nail in the coffin to check that motor mount and lo and behold, it was untouched. You have to be careful with mechanics now, can't trust anyone. They definitely prey on people that just trust everyone and throw money left and right.

Would this be the same thing for left turns? I get a noise on left turns, hardly noticeable when I am actually on the road, but I always hear it when I am in my parking garage. I have also noticed that when it is really cold out, the steering seems a little rough...almost feels like it locks up a little bit. I can't tell if it is a problem with my power steering or not. 06 S40 T5 @ 94k mi, just had my timing belt, tensioner, drive belts, and the passenger side motor mount replaced. They didn't say anything about my driver side motor mount, but I'm not sure how thoroughly they checked it since it wasn't what they were working on.
@scherdaddy65
@scherdaddy65 8 жыл бұрын
It is hard to say since you already replaced that one motor mount. I think the passenger motor mount holds forward moving torque. my noise started with right hand turns mainly when cold then eventually started making noise accelerating on inclines as well since motor lifted up more as it got worse. initially thought it was CV joint but boots were not broken open which is usually when they break down due to contaminants. Also looked at A arm bushings but it was not that after replacing all that first. noticed motor torquing too much while looking under hood as someone started in 1st up incline

Not really, my noise was turning right or going up an incline when accelerating (basically under a load) causing the engine to lift up due to bad motor mount and causing it to bind with the transmission I suppose. If yours is making noise all the time could be suspension or drive train related. Are any of your CV axle boots broke open? Mine was a 5 spd. If someone started out in first up a hill while I stood beside the engine I could see it rise up more than normal. Hope this helps. Let me know what it ends up being. Take Care

@@scherdaddy65 Hey man, so replaced the engine mount and the nasty noise from left wheel when turning right under power is gone. Quiet, so quiet. Engine mount also cleared up a slight bit annoying vibration when accelerating and when idling at around 2000rpm. Clanking persisted until I rechecked front right hand top mount which I somehow managed to not install correctly. Rattled them up until snug but still kooked it. Extremely surprised to discover it loose. Still can't see how it happened unless it bound up then moved loose as I drove. Was just a little movement but enough. Chased this clanking noise through both droplinks, sway bar bushes, engine mount and finally the top mount. Everything is excellent now. Your video set me on the right path so thanks a lot, I appreciate it. Did the starter motor too. Airbox is a bitch but wriggles free to the left with patience. Noted it can't be tested without reconnecting everything. Cheers amigo, I've subscribed.

I just bought a 2008 S70 Convertible T5. Engine mounts and layout appear to be exactly the same as your S40. It's making a loud "thunk" sound when slowing down or sometimes speeding up. Also when making turns. Sounds seems to be more from the drivers side. Mechanic told me to replace the struts AND the motor mounts (along with new belts, which seems like a good idea since you're already in that part of the engine.) I'm thinking the struts are fine and my noise is from the motor mounts. Also car is slow to go to first gear at times (causing a little burnout.. Look kids.. I'm not trying to be cool. My car just has a problems.) Was yours a CLUNK kinda sound?
@scherdaddy65
@scherdaddy65 6 жыл бұрын
Brad Myers it has been awhile and as the mount got worse the noise changed. It was also worse when the gear oil was cold. It was a clunking and grinding noise when accelerating and turns from stop. You might also have someone look at the engine as you start out up an incline. That's when I saw the engine rise up higher than norm. I have never changed the struts and have 170k miles. Good luck

@scherdaddy65 3 жыл бұрын
I am no certified mechanic but I don't think any car fluid on the motor mount would cause it to fail. It would probably be anti freeze or engine oil possibly in that area. I've seen motor mounts break to where the engine looked like it would come out of the car but my volvo mount was more subtlety visible looking at it starting in first gear up an incline with someone looking under the hood.

@scherdaddy65
@scherdaddy65 8 жыл бұрын
It was the passenger side Upper motor mount that was broken allowing the engine to twist or torque too much when under a load starting out in 1st or 2nd or going up Hill. This would cause a misalignment between engine and transmission making the gears in the transmission bind. you can see this mount under the hood but visual inspection will not show the break. there is another mount near the transmission but it was not causing my issue in forward. Best of luck

I would like to know if urs noise was like rattling noise? Bcos I hve s40 2004 and there is this rattling noise when I step on the gas n am thinking abt changing the mounts but I don't want to waste time n money if Thts not the problem causing the noise
@scherdaddy65
@scherdaddy65 9 жыл бұрын
The noise was a rattle/grinding that the gears made as they came out of alignment as the motor rotated too far. Always worse when cold and under a load light turning up incline from a stop. Eventually would do it accelerating up on ramps. Cv axles tend to do this when turning under load is why I thought it was that but boots were not cut where grease would leak out and that is what normally starts them going. Have someone start car in first up slight Hill and see how far motor rotates is how I finally decided on motor mount. Good luck let me know what it ends up being

Andres Prada it was a grinding noise when just turning right at first and as the motor mount weakened it would do it accelerating up slight inclines like highway ramps because the motor was lifting up and binding with drive train among other things i guess. i thought it was CV Axle but if boots aren't broke they tend to last unless abused. it's been good few years now

I am only a backyard mechanic but I did end up replacing my motor mount myself and did not use any special tools that volvo called for hoisting the engine. Is your noise when you are letting the clutch out or right after it engages? Also if a bad motor mount you can see motor raise and torque more than normal while looking under hood while someone else drives especially up a little Hill. Mine sounded like gears grinding and popping till I got going and worse when cold or uphill

@@scherdaddy65 In the racing world you always take off your stock engine mounts, fill them with silicone and bolt back on. The silicone reduces any loss of torque if its the really hard silicone. However if you use softer silicone in that rubber boot you still have something to reduce vibration and it absolutely will work. Some jack the engine up a tiny bit from the oilpan using wood between jack and pan. Do this, let silicone set for curing time, then let jack down and silicone should fill the gaps it needed to.
