3 years after this was filmed this video is still extremely relevant. The JL's have now been on the market for 2+ years and the Gladiator has even hit showrooms in the last few months. What makes this relevant possibly even moreso now, is that many of us are used Jeep buyers, and to trying to find solid information and candid commentary (likes and dislikes) on Trim levels in jeeps from 3 Plus years ago is next to impossible. Way to film a show with real legs, guys! Keep it up. I'm always up for watching a TFL video I've never seen whether its old or new!

I just sold my 2 door 2012 jk. I really like it and in 3 years all buy one again. here's what I learned on what to get. 1.) 2 door. even though I sold mine because my family grew and the reason was the car seats and stroller was a pain with my first kid and now she's 3 and one on the way I had to get rid of them and I bougth 2 brand new Hyundais. once my kids get to the age of just needing a booster is 2 door again, they are young, they won't have any issues in the back, plus, it's the classic looks plus cheaper, looks better with doors off. 2.) manual doors. the one I had came with power everything, but after so many times taking the doors off the plug finally gave in. plus with out the door and top off everything becomes useless. no rear wiper, Windows and mirrors. plus it's cheaper. being a 2 door i can easily reach the other door and roll it down. 3.) soft top. I had the hard and in the 4 years that I had it I only took it 2 times. it's so awkward to take by yourself and my wife could not help. plus all of my buddies live way too far to give a hand. also my house it's very small and that hard top will take a lot of space. on top of that I live in Socal, so the cold and extreme heat are not an issue. I already pay a premium for loving here in San Diego. 4.) manual?. I had the auto and it's was great,but I'm still not sure if to get the manual. I'm not very good with it plus it will be my DD in bumper to bumper for 2 hours a day. I'm 50/50. 5.) Sport or Rubicon? I had the sport s with basic gear and 33s. power was nice and never had and issue. I wanted the 35s but it was too late. I will really like to build a monster, but I would also like a side by side or and ATV, so money is an issue. The rubicon I know it would be more than I need and I can just trow 35s and a lift. with my sport I want to all places, mud, sand, rocks, dirt and all you need is a good set of tires. lockers would help, so in here I'm also 50/50. but what ever I get this would be my lifetime car. I don't want to sell it ever. I do get attached to things and I want to build a relationship with my next jeep.

I wholly endorse every comment made in this video. I will say that on the trail, the manual is highly gratifying because you are so involved. Let's face it, in the modern world, we don't drive on a dirt road or go camping because it's easier than our daily life. The challenge and triumph is invigorating.

Obviously, your budget will make up your mind for you here. Some people cannot afford a Rubicon right out of the showroom, so they opt for Sport models. The great thing about Jeeps is that people make them unique, in whatever trim they purchased them in. If you can't afford a Rubicon you can build a Jeep, that is just as capable, over time! I've seen Sport/Sahara model owners who added aftermarket axles, air lockers, and coil-over suspensions that would outshine any stock Rubicon. Personally, I have the '14 JK Rubicon X (same as the Hard Rock trim). Even still, I have modded this thing out immensely & I love checking out other people's builds. :)

They apparently plan to overlap production of the old and new Wranglers for a period of time. You might get a good buy if you wait until the new Wrangler starts production and grab one of the old designs. I'm with Nathan on the Willys W package. It offers the most bang for your buck. It isn't a Rubicon, but you get a lot of capability for your money.

I was telling her one day the 4 doors dominate sales, so now whenever we're driving we try to spot as many as we can (only rule is dealerships don't count). It started as just JKs but now I give her CJs, YJs, and TJs. In almost a year she's never beaten me.

I have a 1995 YJ sport - 2.5L 4 cyl - 5 speed M/T, manual steering, 130+K miles - still going. I also have a 2014 JKU - half doors, soft top, 6 spd manual, 69k miles (120 mile commute daily). I did swap the 3.21's for 3.73's - just about necessary for manual trans because the Pentastar does not make enough torque at low RPM. I prefer the M/T's in both my Wranglers - I always have the gear I want. I don't mind the wind noise, and I do like pulling the half door uppers out in the summer. I still enjoy both Jeeps.

I had an 08 JK and it was fine with the glaring exception of the fact that it burned oil like crazy. It would literally burn 3 quarts of oil every 5000 miles and the vehicle had less than 25K miles on it. Turns out oil consumption was very common with that 3.8 V6. Apparently the workers at the engine assembly plant never heard of the simple concept of staggering the piston rings during engine assembly. Typical Chrysler product.

Oh look, NovaMan is a clueless Chrysler fan boy. lol It's not my fault the motors burned oil. It's a common problem with the 3.8 V6. Do some research and find out. Crap like that is why Chrysler products consistently stay at the bottom of the reliability lists. I don't know if the new Pentastar V6 is any better but I know for a fact the old 3.8 V6 burned oil like there was no tomorrow. Crappy Chrysler quality control as usual. Deal with it.
@joshdoesathing
@joshdoesathing 8 жыл бұрын
Honestly. The 3.7 burned oil, too. They would be better off modernizing the 4.0, due to it's famous reliability and longevity. The 3.6 Pentastar at least competes power-wise now, which the 3.7 and 3.8 did not.

I searched for a clean, unmolested LJ Rubicon and they kept slipping between my fingers and the prices...at least in Southern California started running up to the mid 20's for a 10 year old Jeep. I really didn't want a Jeep with the 3.8 engine so made the jump to 2012 and newer Rubicon's. I scored a 2014 Rubi and I love it but every time I see a clean 04-06 LJ Rubicon I smile...love those Jeeps. That 4.0 engine is like a cockroach...you can't kill it.

@MultiPurposeReviewer
@MultiPurposeReviewer 8 жыл бұрын
Nevil Easterling The TJ trims of Rubicon and Sahara are the same idea as the ones with the JK (although I'd argue that the TJ Sahara is more worth it than the JK Sahara). The TJ Sahara was indeed more of an appearance package, with nice leather, body decals, special wheels, etc. The TJ Rubicon came with most of the Sahara's features, but also Dana 44s front and back, locking differentials front and back, and higher axle ratios.

The wranglers are the one most customizable vehicles built. From soccer moms and mail carriers to overland expedition vehicles its a topic you guys left out. Once you own a JK or JKU you can tailor it to fit your specific lifestyle. There are so many aftermarket options it's insane. Our club has a surgeon we helped him transform new hard rock to a mobile hospital/rescue vehicle for Dr's without borders, one the vehicle was complete it was truly impressive featuring a rear annex with exam table dual front winches, water tanks etc. all the items were available after market the only thing that was custom made was the front bumper. If you guys make another video you might want to mention aftermarket options that can truly make your JK a unique vehicle.

Hey, thanks for the video. Much appreciate the information and the different points of view. I planned on driving my 2007 2-door X until the wheels fell off but unfortunately it was stolen. I traded in what was left of it on a 2017 2-door Willys w/ auto trans, LED lights, premium soft top and an EVTS. I'll take it to Car Toys for a car alarm and locking lug nuts as well as replace the speakers. No power windows/locks for me. I can roll up/down my windows myself to save $2K. No A/C either. Just doesn't get hot enough in the Pacific NW. I had A/C in my X and never used it. I'll pull out the useless backseat for more cargo area. Had to have the Rubi shocks and 3.73 gear ratio as well as the Bluetooth. Surprised you didn't warn folks away from the ridiculously overpriced $500 tow package when you can get the same thing for $80 online. Can't wait for the Willys to arrive! Keep up the good work. Oh, got the auto trans because it will be my daily driver and my dog insists that I keep one hand on him at all times so it's kind of a safety feature.

A lot of people like the 2 door version, but I prefer the 4 door version. Lots of arguments for each. But it seems like when you go taller with lifts/tires on the 2 door, you have to stretch them out a bit so they handle better on the trail not wanting to be tipsy. I don't normally have extra passengers, so I don't really need the back seats. To me the ideal jeep would be somewhere between the 2 door and 4 door.

We don't get a diesel or V8 wrangler is US because of US safety standards. Diesels and V8s are heavier and therefore would be more likely to penetrate the firewall or other critical structures in frontal collisions potentially increasing the risk of severe lower extremity damage. This is info I received from a Jeep manufacturer when I inquired with the question. I personally think its long overdue and a turbo 6 or turbo diesel wrangler would be absolutely amazing.

Also the 2016s with the Alpine speaker group now get flush mounted tweeters (over the tombstone pods on the dash) and the sub is in the floor in the back not taking up cargo room on the side. All and all I like the manual trans but I did notice they don't shift smooth. You can feel the syncros step into place very noticeably. I tried out a couple different manuals and they all felt the same. And YES way long throw, but then again this isn't a Camaro!

I got a 2015 Sport 2-door 3.73 with hard top, speakers, towing, a/c and tinted window options. If I had to do it all over again, I'd drop the a/c. Only thing I was bummed about was no tan interior option on my trim level. I think the extra gauge info and power inverter also required all the other extra electrics, which I didn't want at all.

Recently took delivery of a Rubicon Hardrock and this video is just about spot on. I will add, if you're looking at upgrading to the 430N Uconnect system, don't. $1200 for the upgrade and it's an ancient touch system with a poor quality display (feels very 2005). I want to say it's like 240x360 pixels lol and a single disc CD player. Not to mention incompatibility with the Apple family of mobile devices (lag and skipping while bluetooth streaming). Another savings tip, if you're looking to upgrade your jeep with armor etc, you're probably better off staying away from the hardrock, it only gets the dome hood the front and rear bumpers and some quality of life additions I think you can just add on to a Rubicon build. Use that money saved on that trash deck and get you something top of the line that will cook you breakfast for that price... I would be surprised if they pay more than $100 to actually produce the Uconnect 430N. It's that bad.

I'm 66, my wife is 56. Its just the two of us and our Dog. I Volunteer as a Disaster Response Coordinator for the 7th-Day Adventist Church in our Community. I'm thinking because we DON'T have kids, that I would go with a 2-door as a daily driver, and the occasional logging road explorer on weekends. I would go for the hardtop, and I would spend the money on the Heavy-Duty Alternator for Lights, and my Ham Radio setup.

Great video guys!! I have a hard rock unlimited. Navigation system sux... no real time traffic and hate having to be stopped to enter in a destination. I get it's for safety and can override that but still. Happy I got the roof liner, 4.10 and max tow package. Love both tops and went with the black fenders and roof... it's a jeep not a hummer! Wish I would have gotten the winch installed by the dealer... will eventually lift it a bit and get slightly bigger tires.

Red Horse so it looks like it changed ownership 9 times, i wonder why they would change hands so many times, is it because of the fact that they have had a bad reputation for decades in reliability ratings or because they always had financial problems?

Soft top is pretty sweet. I agree with the wind noise aspect, but otherwise, vehicle gets warm quick, I've lived in Ohio and Oregon with it... Comfy once warm just like any car, and no leaks, even in 6+ months of Oregon rain. Can't beat the ease of dropping the top when the sun is out either.

I have a Willy’s 2 door. No power stuff. I look at that at more things going wrong. Easy rolling down passenger window in a 2 door. Other plus of auto with LS is you can manage the brake and gas simultaneously and get your axle to work close to a locked axle. Just my opinion. 3.73s are fine for 35s, just my opinion. Agree with most stuff in video.

I'm surprised how many Jeep Wranglers there are here in Illinois. I'd bet less than 1% of owners are taking them offroad, even onto gravel roads. And they handle terribly on-road. And for the price, you could get a 4Runner which is far superior on-road and superior in terms of reliability and general quality of build and materials and is still a body on frame, off-road capable-ish vehicle (depending on the model). Image really is everything.

Had a 12 2dr sport and it was awesome but it wasn't practical for daily use being a home owner nor could it tow the camper I wanted to buy ... Trading it in a 15 unlimited sport auto with 4.10s ( had to order ) and couldn't be happier !! Also I had a soft top and now a hard top, biggest benefit of the hardtop for me is loading cargo into the back, unzipping and rolling the rear window just to put a large box or something in there got so old so fast ... Also I had a manual and loved it however having three knee surgeries on my left knee, I couldn't take the grinding of my knee working the clutch after a weekend of off-road :/

We just purchased a 2d Sahara with soft top. Why? We are retired, wanted something to tow behind motorhome, something fun to drive when coach is parked so not a lot of distance driving, convertible at least in part, and short for towing. Now also we wanted more luxury options than you can get and Sahara was best for options for us and mainly road use. Anyhow wanted to point out a few reasons for Sahara and 2d from some older folks.

Still driving my Liberty KK (lift kit, bigger tires, upgraded bumper, added skid plates 3 months ago, will be adding a lunchbox locker soon) and it's still running like a top with regular maintenance. Why? It's a Jeep, of course. Performs fantastic. However, once it has seen it's day and it is time to move on, it's probably going to be either an Unlimited Rubicon or one of the new pickup body style ones for me.

I love my 2015 Rubicon Hard Rock. Jeep Discontinued the Uconnect 730N after the 2015 model year. it had much better sound and navigation than the current 430N. I originally wanted the standard Rubicon, but the dealer did not have any with a manual transmission, Lucky for my they did made me a smoking deal on a Rubicon Hard Rock because it had the 6 speed manual and everybody wanted the automatic.I have had 3 wranglers, a 95, 2005 and now a 2015. the alpine stereo is the best system I have ever heard in a Jeep and is better even than some other companies premium stereos. I was really impressed. I think the stereo in my old 2005 TJ X model was scientifically designed to be the worse sounding stereo ever. It like some Daimler-Chrysler engineers sat down together and said "how can we make the worst car stereo ever", and then bought stock in aftermarket radio companies. I didn't own it 30 day before it dove crazy to the point I had to swap it out. if you a getting a Wrangler, get the hard top. you can not talk to the person next to you above 50mph with out yelling with the softtop. the 2015 hard rock edition also had an insulated hard top to reduce noise and temperature. I think jeep made that standard now as every 2016 and 2017 I have seen has it. I am going to have to look into retrofitting the 2017 headlights on mine. there are after market ones, but they are between $500 and $700.

I just don't understand how a manufacturer can make a vehicle that's designed specifically for off-road, with open differentials? I understand you can get lockers on the Rubicon. Some form of rear locker or limited slip should be standard....period. You should also be able to get a front locker without the huge price tag of the Rubicon if they want this to be taken seriously as an "off roader". IMO. Very good vid in any event.
