It is beautiful, and you might be right… but I’ve had a 2020 Vantage for about 18mo now and I have to say, I’ve never gotten more attention (uncomfortably so sometimes) in any car I’ve ever had. (Among them 2 Lotus evora generations, 3 cayman generations, an m2, a C7 corvette, Jags, Bmws, the list goes on). Ppl like to hate on the new one, but the “general populace” seems to love it.

I’ve owned mine for 12 years now and I still turn around and look at her every time I park. That’s a special car. Two things not mentioned here is just how reliable they are thanks to Ford ownership at the time and just how transformed these cars become with some mods. A lightweight flywheel and full exhaust/tune transforms the sluggish nature into an eager car. This is one of the great last analog cars.

The VH Platform on which all Astons from this era are built, was originally developed by Lotus. They’re known for building some of the best handling chassis ever made. Weight distribution is even and you find double wishbone suspension in all four corners. (The new double wish bone front axle is something the new 992 GT3 gets praised for currently as no 911 ever had it before). This superior chassis is the reason why Aston Martin won everything in the early 2000‘s in long distance racing including Le Mans also besing Porsches. On Top Gear the DBS went around the track quicker then the Zonda.

Yes, analogue! Still plenty analogue in it and that is the reason to love it. Proper car with proper gear-lever. It is not so sluggish if you ‘drive it’ right. When you park it you want to walk away backwards. The first drive in mine I thought the speedo was broken as I trundles away from the dealer😂 then I realised it was calibrated in wrap factors and 25 mph did not really make anything happen. Thank you for the vid I think you get it

911 = more capable but less soul. Vantage = more soul less capable. Have a porsche right now. Dont intend on it going anywhere. But shopping for a vantage. The sound. The look. The elegance. It's a special event. Do I care the vantage is slower? Hell no. Do I care it has a volvo key, volvo mirrors, and a terrible relic of a volvo nav (or other random ford parts)? Nope seriously dont. Why? Because its about the experience. And for those that think the 4.3 is a lethargic it's nothing exhaust, tune, and a flywheel (factory v12 flywheel).

So the actual buyer's guide part only consists of door struts, deck lid drainage, and a strange emergency brake handle configuration? Usually when I think of buyer's guides I expect a comprehensive walk around with a list of what to look for when shopping, tell tale signs of possible poor maintenance or looming issues, what questions you should ask, where you might be able to save money, what should you spend extra on, etc. All I really got out of this is that it makes a great noise and it was build to compete with the 911, which, based on sales #'s, it really didn't but was a big hit for Aston Martin. Honestly it is a VERY good looking car. And while it was made while Ford owned Aston Martin it'll still be a horribly unreliable maintenance nightmare. I'd probably still have one over a similar year 911, though.

Absolutely. For this, he showed a couple Doug-style quirks like the fly-off handbrake, but mostly just talked about what it was like to drive and why we all should get one. I had a 2007 V8 Vantage, black, black leather, anthracite wheels (bought 2014, sold 2016). I was going to keep it forever but then I lost my job. I was lucky enough to still be able to 'trade down' to a 996. They're both excellent cars for the money and I think history will show that ~2007 was the pinnicle of mechanical-feeling motoring. Vantage pros: looks, sound, interior, bulletproof engine, beautifully engineered, alloy/composite so no rust, ladies love it. Vantage cons: feels big/heavy compared to 911, electrical gremlins, poor paintwork prep from factory means despite aluminium panels you'll still get bubbles under the paint, clutches don't last long and are exprensive to replace. 996 pros: just feels great, light front end, narrow - easy to play with narrow Scottish roads, really a bargain for what they are, no slower despite 80bhp deficit, feels great, nimble, feels really rather nice. 996 cons, engines can go boom, interior not great, ugly headlights (yawn).

Fair point, I guess there's two schools of thought on that. It comes down to whether you're buying it for the looks and the sound, or you're buying it to drive fast. Either way, I think a Jaguar from the same era is much better value - mechanically similar to the old 4.3L Aston (Aston used the Jag motor as a base), but you don't have to pay the James Bond tax.

I truly do not understand the mindset of buying a car to baby or pamper. A car is to be driven. Provided the availability of funds, if I owned an Aston Martin, or any high-end sports/exotic/supercar, I would daily it with proper, regular maintenance. Anyone with garage queens are missing out on the point of a vehicle. This remains true on what many deem “collector” cars. Again, cars should not be curated like museum pieces. There are two types of car buyers. Logic minded consumers usually buy with a few factors in mind such as budget, maintenance costs, and insurability. Enthusiasts buy with the heart; they buy because the car provides smiles per gallon.

It was not a car designed to be driven at 10/10ths on the track. It was always going to be a long distance tourer and at that it excells. The boot/trunk is big enough to take proper luggage, the steering is very well weighted with oodles of feel, the gear change is exact (especially once the oil has some temperature in it). The only weakness within the drive train on this car is the clutch. But once it's spent anyone in their right mind will change it out for a twin plate unit with lightened flywheel. This makes all the difference, bite and feel is much better, throttle response is much improved in the lower areas of the rev range and in all honesty 5000 rpm isn't when things come alive, it's actually 4000rpm and this is also when the valves in the exhaust are actuated and the real noise is let loose. Door struts are around £20 each and are easily fitted. Water flowing into the trunk is a flaw. The handbrake is a work of art and does not in anyway infringe on the driving of the car because it's tucked away. The Vantage is a wonderous car to drive, especially in an era of anadine electric cars, the manual Vantage is a visceral experience, it has plentiful character and every journey is an event.

This guy is commenting on its sporting characteristics against 911 while driving a car with lowering springs.. Drive a standard vantage and you'll see it is very capable, drive a later 4.7 sports pack car or Vantage S and it will really surprise you. I watched this video months ago when I was looking for mine, and Im glad I watched this. I finally got my Sports Pack Vantage last month - I'll admit I didn't test drive before buying, I didn't care how it drove I just lusted after it so bad. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised, this is no standard GT like the DB9 or other Aston's of the past - this thing is a brutal (albeit heavy) sports car, sublime balance and incredible steering feel. I came from Cayman S, Toyota GT86 and a JDM SW20 GT-S - all of which excluding the Cayman I have tracked. The Cayman blows it away for sure just down to weight and well its a Porsche, but nothing feels and makes you feel like the Vantage does - the sound, the interior, the badge. Aston didn't hold anything back with this generation of vantage (except the Volvo satnav and buttons 😂) but one look at that gorgeous bonded aluminium tub chassis and you know this is something quite serious indeed. If you're looking at getting one of these try find a 4.7, it is an incredible car. I have been lucky enough to drive a few 911s from air-cooled to modern, and I don't regret a thing - I couldn't fathom getting into a 997 instead of this after buying it. I repeat if you are looking at one of these BUY IT.

I instead bought cash a really low mileage black Genesis Coupe Grand Touring with the brown interior, navigation pretty much fully spec'd and got to keep a ton of money and feels literally the same after getting an aftermarket exhaust and KW coilovers. Only maintenance i had to do to it was the timing chain components and transmission fluid. No issues at all after all the miles being daily driven to work while wearing a 3 piece suit. Considering maybe getting that aston or the GTR sometime in the future as a second car.

Don't get it maintained by a franchised dealer unless the car still has the Aston Timeless warranty. Find a good indie that runs the Aston software and you're good to go. The side repeaters are from a Ford transit, the door, boot and bonnet struts are £20 each etc etc.... I'll take the V8 over 911 in a heart beat! It isn't perfect but that makes it better in my eyes. And it is a damn pretty! My only doubt is roadster or coupe :)

Thought about selling mine a couple times, always back out. Manual 4.7L with headers, cat delete, tune, intake box delete, lightened flywheel with dual disc clutch, shocks and lowering springs, 2 rotors and lighter wheels and wider rubber. At a tick under 500bhp it's the car it should have been from the factory. I've put about 45k miles on it in 5 years and not one issue. That includes several track days.

If you have the money the V12 Vantage manual is the way to go. Built in 2011, 2012 and them again in 2017, nothing beats a V12 with a manual transmission. They built less than 150 V12 manuals in 2011-2012 if you can find one for sale (owners love them) you are sure to have a future collectable.

There are a couple manual V12s on Autotrader, and most are hovering around £80k. @jasonbound7 is correct, the first production year was 2009.

@@surrealtom i was referring to US model years. The model years here are 2011 and 2012. Unfortunately model years in other countries are irrelevant since we cannot import a car until its 25 years old

Should change the title, it was more of a car review than a buyer's guide. A buyer's guide should focus mainly on changes each model year, things to watch out for, options that are must and options that need to be avoided, major or common problems, rough idea on cost of ownership etc. Only points that were covered was brief mentioning of door dampers can be shot and that earlier models can have baggy seat.

Nothing about this video is a buyers guide except 30sec about the seat stitching & dashboard leather. Everything is else is you saying the 911 is the go-to & this car sounds good. Not really any more useful info for perspective buyers.

Get a 2009 or later model, and you get an engine upsize to 4.7 and HP increase to 420. Also the glass key from the DB9 which slides into the dash and becomes the start button (and goes red if you press the clutch down first).

Some of the other differences between the Aston Martin and the 911... The Porsche was reliable/durable enough to be used daily and actually retained some value after a few years and several thousand miles.

Is that after the engine had been rebuilt after IMF bearing failure?. A bad owner experience of a 911 is as costly as one of these. However, some people have done over 100k miles now with nothing more than good maintainence and parts replacement similar to a 911. Neither is cheap....unless its one of the many 911s that are out there which are abused and never maintained properly.

If you're wanting a car to thrash round a race track and brag to your mates about technical prowess....buy the 911....however if you want a car that is super classy, makes you feel great every time you drive it and sounds absolutely sublime at high revs out in the countryside....buy the Aston. And the advice....buy one now as I did....as they definitely won't be low price for much longer when the mainstream buyers realise how good they really are!.

In 2014 I was looking at a 09+ Vantage, it had the 4.7l engine little bit more power. At the time they were around 45-50k. However when I went to test drive it the automatic transmission sucked. And the power was still lacking. Who would have thunk 7 years later, it still retained its value. Along with the Corvettes , 911s, Rolex's and Houses... Must be all this stimulus money. I will check back after the crash to see if prices have dropped.

There are always going to be hard plastic somewhere. These cars are beautiful inside and out. When someone makes a comment like yours it's obvious this car is out of your sphere.

The centre stack actually feels more premium than it looks, the area above and below are metal, the car is a premium feeling product but if you compare it to modern day cars you will find things have moved on. Compare it to cars of the same vintage and believe me the Porsche had way more plastic in it.

Bring back Sam Smith. Parker's script/presentation is lacking, ESPECIALLY compared to Sam. I mean jeez this dude pronounced "Jaguar" as "Jagwire." I rest my case lol Also would've liked to know more about what to look for when purchasing one of these. You know, like an actual buyer's guide?

Please explain why I wouldn't want to drive this every day. You've said "That's not what it's for" but that does not explain anything. Is it too firm? Is it too fragile? Everything contained in the video tells me that I would, in fact, want to drive one every day if I had one. More information about reliability and servicing costs would also be useful.
