You really deserve a big like from my side because you saved me $1450. Great info but the tools (while effective) were cringe-worthy to see being used/in action. I know it was a 9 year old car at the time the video was published but even then I think a good set of nylon pry tools were about $15. Major testament to the scratch resistant to those Mini plastics.... Again, not being a hater here - still probably the best video on the topic I've seen!

Great video. Thank you for making it. My only comment would be that it instead of routing the microphone cable through the access hole on the side of the dash as you did it would probably be easier to run it all the way down to below the dash. I believe that would allow the cable to be completely hidden in the door jam tucked under the rubber molding. Regards,

Hey, Dino! Long time fan. So I just bought a R56 MINI and I'd really like to replace the radio, much like this. I'd prefer to keep the computer controls, but it looks like that may not be possible. My question is, have you run into any issues after removing the controls on the front? I hear it's pretty integrated into the MINI computer and can cause some electrical gremlins. If you haven't had any problems with it in the last year, then I guess there's nothing stopping me from just ripping the sucker out!

Just replaced the radio in my R56 with a Kenwood GPS unit. I too am trying to keep the computer display instead of using the blank outs. I was able to disconnect the ribbon cable from the back of the computer display and as a result was able to leave the display and controls in place. Of course, now there is no power to the display. However, I was able to take apart the radio head unit to expose the ribbon cable all the way back to where the original wire harness was plugged into. So the question is what powers the computer display? It looks like the radio harness is divided into 3 sections. There is a right bottom section that has 9 wires in it. I would assume that would power the radio and speakers. There is a left bottom section that has 2 black coded wires and access to the fuse. And then there is the top section, which is divided into 2 parts. Does that work the computer? The reason I don't know is because I did not put the radio in. I had my local Best Buy guy do it and he frankly did not have the time to chase my idea. What do you think? Is this the possible space for the computer inputs, etc?
@HackaweekTV4 жыл бұрын
That display is controlled by the board in the factory radio. The only way to keep it is to keep the entire board intact, along with the CD mechanism. The info on that display is also present on the tachometer display and can be accessed with the button on the end of the turn signal lever. You reset any function by pressing and holding the button until it resets. No need to keep the display in the middle.
@ernieoo4 жыл бұрын
HackaweekTV I was able to remove the entire cd mechanism and keep all 3 boards intact. Then I closed the unit back up to cover all the boards. What I don’t know is what set of wires work the display. I’m thinking its the set of 24 (2 sets of 12)above the square set of wires. All these wires are placed in a shared harness in the back of the radio. Am I thinking correctly? I don’t want to tear into the dash again only to be wrong. And yes, I do use the tach display now, but would like use of the original.
@Liftoff_TV6 жыл бұрын
I apologize if this is a stupid question, but did you need to buy any adapters for the new radio? If so, where did you buy them?
@reydio6 жыл бұрын
You can buy the adapter online or your local auto stereo dealers - It's a Metra Part #70-9003. Also what he forgot is that you will need to add a constant 12V wire to the radio/receiver. Do not use the one with the adapter., it loses 12V after how many minutes the car is off and your radio/receiver will lose some of it's settings from memory.

Great video, I am going to do mine this weekend. Was hoping I could keep the digital display and not have to put the black out parts in the speedometer. Do you think that is possible? Was hoping I could get some of the computer parts to still work. What do you think?

I tried. The computer unit is built into the factory CD player. I gave up on that idea. The info is still displayed on the tach and you can use the push button on the tip of the turn signal stalk to toggle through the read outs. If you want to reset one, just hold the button in for about 5 seconds and it'll reset.

First off, thanks. Simple with the descriptions and clear. I was able to do the same thing at the same time with little pausing or skipping. Very good video. Now, I'm trying to diagnose a button issue. Those selection buttons for the radio, some work and some don't. Primarily the middle guys. So I figure there's some debris between the plastic button/membrane/switch. I got to the point of removing the speedometer before other things pulled me away. Question is: does that sound like the right thought process? Can you get into the interior that deep? Or do I just need to search for a new set of buttons or speedometer? Any insight is appreciated.

I know this video is super old but I’m curious how you went about wiring the yellow power wires. The harness has a yellow power form the car and also come with one to wire direct to the battery. You didn’t touch on it much in the video about the actual wiring of the harness but I see you connected the yellow from the harness to the yellow from radio with an inline fuse. Do you ever connect the battery direct as well? I just installed one and saw another video where they just wired to direct to the battery as per the instructions and left the yellow on the chime retention harness unconnected and taped out of the way. I did it this way but I have all kinds of weird electrical issues and just wondering if you experienced any issues after the install? From what I understand without the contact from the wire direct to the battery you will just lose all memory after a short amount of time.

Honestly not sure. I think I ran a wire directly to the battery with a fuse holder.

Did you figure it out. You connect the radio to the long yellow wire that you should have connected to the battery. The yellow wire to the harness doesn't get connected
