You really deserve a big like from my side because you saved me $1450. My radio and sound system stopped working and I asked Mini dealer to fix it they said it will cost you $1500, so I decided to fix myself. I ordered a preowned radio and sound controller from EBay for 50 bucks and installed it myself following your video. Thanks you for the video

I miss older cars where you could have a stereo out in a matter of a couple minutes...but I guess that's why stereos used to be stolen so frequently.

It was worth the time it took. The stock unit is just odd to use and it's audio quality was very lacking.

It’s quite simple. All it is, is patience. It seems easy when he does it but when you get hands on, things start getting confusing but if you are patient it becomes easy and understandable. I’m going to do this on my mini but I am also going to either paint or replace all of the old switches cause they ugly!

THX! Your video helped me to break down my 2009 Mini S & saved me big bucks on changing out my non working radio. Only spent $100 on a used one. I changed out the 3 circuit boards & main unit with my existing good clean front parts. Luckily I didn't have to get it reprogrammed. (it's so important to buy the right compatible unit) It was a long process but it was well worth it all! After 5 longs months I finally got a working radio again!

That "vent" you used for your mic is where the factory multi-directional microphone is installed with the upgraded HK audio system. So in essence you used it for what it's meant to be used for :-) I have the HK audio in my 2012 MCS and as much as it is a nice factory system...it's lacking as well (coming from years of custom audio installs and high quality components spoils you!)

Uses all metal tools to disassemble plastic dash parts.... Lays down a towel to protect his workbench.... Brilliant! Great info but the tools (while effective) were cringe-worthy to see being used/in action. I know it was a 9 year old car at the time the video was published but even then I think a good set of nylon pry tools were about $15. Major testament to the scratch resistant to those Mini plastics.... Again, not being a hater here - still probably the best video on the topic I've seen!

My radio won't come on at all and I replaced all the fuses but it's still not coming on. I have a 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman s and as I've been looking at these videos a common problem but might you know a common solution I'm not seeing too much of that it's really frustrating as the summer is here and I'd really like to hear my jams going down the highway this is a new car to me and it's kind of a bummer not to hear my Tunes I'm really grateful to your video though to give me some insight on to step-by-step to replace the radio itself with the model that you had. So keep those videos coming if you could you're a really good teacher and I'm just a chic loves my cool car and I'm not very knowledgeable but thanks to you sir I gained some knowledge today! Please message me back if you have any suggestions I would really really appreciate it specially coming from somebody that could give me not just a guess on the issue. Thanks Car Guy! Great video. Thank you for making it. My only comment would be that it instead of routing the microphone cable through the access hole on the side of the dash as you did it would probably be easier to run it all the way down to below the dash. I believe that would allow the cable to be completely hidden in the door jam tucked under the rubber molding. Regards,

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but did you need to buy any adapters for the new radio? If so, where did you buy them?
@reydio
@reydio 6 жыл бұрын
You can buy the adapter online or your local auto stereo dealers - It's a Metra Part #70-9003. Also what he forgot is that you will need to add a constant 12V wire to the radio/receiver. Do not use the one with the adapter., it loses 12V after how many minutes the car is off and your radio/receiver will lose some of it's settings from memory.

I've been considering updating the stereo in my 2010 Clubman. Have you noticed any hiccups since you did your swap? Other than the computer settings you could reach with the stock stereo, have you had any issues getting into and changing settings via the turn signal stalk? Is there anything else I should expect after performing a stereo swap of my own?

Great video! I spoke to an installer who said that I might have an amp driving my speakers. Did you have to wire for an existing amp? Apparently the Minis that came with the Harman Kardon sound system had a separate amp. my '08 has two door speakers and I am thinking it might be using an amp as a crossover?.

Just replaced the radio in my R56 with a Kenwood GPS unit. I too am trying to keep the computer display instead of using the blank outs. I was able to disconnect the ribbon cable from the back of the computer display and as a result was able to leave the display and controls in place. Of course, now there is no power to the display. However, I was able to take apart the radio head unit to expose the ribbon cable all the way back to where the original wire harness was plugged into. So the question is what powers the computer display? It looks like the radio harness is divided into 3 sections. There is a right bottom section that has 9 wires in it. I would assume that would power the radio and speakers. There is a left bottom section that has 2 black coded wires and access to the fuse. And then there is the top section, which is divided into 2 parts. Does that work the computer? The reason I don't know is because I did not put the radio in. I had my local Best Buy guy do it and he frankly did not have the time to chase my idea. What do you think? Is this the possible space for the computer inputs, etc?
@HackaweekTV
@HackaweekTV 4 жыл бұрын
That display is controlled by the board in the factory radio. The only way to keep it is to keep the entire board intact, along with the CD mechanism. The info on that display is also present on the tachometer display and can be accessed with the button on the end of the turn signal lever. You reset any function by pressing and holding the button until it resets. No need to keep the display in the middle.
@ernieoo
@ernieoo 4 жыл бұрын
HackaweekTV I was able to remove the entire cd mechanism and keep all 3 boards intact. Then I closed the unit back up to cover all the boards. What I don’t know is what set of wires work the display. I’m thinking its the set of 24 (2 sets of 12)above the square set of wires. All these wires are placed in a shared harness in the back of the radio. Am I thinking correctly? I don’t want to tear into the dash again only to be wrong. And yes, I do use the tach display now, but would like use of the original.

I know this video is super old but I’m curious how you went about wiring the yellow power wires. The harness has a yellow power form the car and also come with one to wire direct to the battery. You didn’t touch on it much in the video about the actual wiring of the harness but I see you connected the yellow from the harness to the yellow from radio with an inline fuse. Do you ever connect the battery direct as well? I just installed one and saw another video where they just wired to direct to the battery as per the instructions and left the yellow on the chime retention harness unconnected and taped out of the way. I did it this way but I have all kinds of weird electrical issues and just wondering if you experienced any issues after the install? From what I understand without the contact from the wire direct to the battery you will just lose all memory after a short amount of time.

so i have a 2012 Mini Countryman. My dash is really close to yours but it does differ a bit. I've looked on Ebay and they have these kits that they say will fit mine. But the dash kit looks more like yours than mine. Does the set of buttons that have the "Sport Mode" & "Driving Light & "Traction Control" switches come off separate than the new faceplate you put on. I couldn't quite see at the end of the video if it's the same.

well I've a 2008 R55 clubman S & I've almost completed my double din install I'm saying kind of, as I'm awaiting a new aerial due to my pioneer stereo not being Dab enabled so I'm needing to refer back to old school anyway for a car with built in sat nav, parking aides etc once the double din is installed you loose it all. loosing the built-in sat-nav due to the sat-nav map/disk being removed & that takes all the controls away from the central screen so its now totally blank. Again with the central screen now being blank due to no signal from the stereo/sat-nav control units the parking aide reverse sensors don't ping anymore so that system is redundant. Also the 2 cup holders are also very limited now as any large can of pop/drinks will block the window switches or simply not fit, also the little cubby area forward of the gear stick is also now a lot smaller. to-do the job it'll take the best part of 3-4hours, easily 30-45mins removing all the dash that needs to be removed as its a lot "but is very easily done!" installing the stereo is again basic with only slight mods required for final fitment ie extending the stereo bold holes to give final fitment a good finish. trimming the replacement fascia to allow full function of the stereo & to allow the heater buttons to work, ie heated seat button catches with the fascia hence trimming of the insides required I've used the connect2 fascia & kit found all over ebay/amazon... again my radio issue I believe is down to DAB compatibility hence the aerial change. the overall benefits "the stereo sound sounds soooooooo much better!" I've played 1 cd & enjoyed every second compared to the basic stereo, also the function & basic options you've a much wider choice. any other functions I've not noticed to have lost any, except for now adjusting the clock on the tacho (unless I've turned blonde I cant remember how to adjust that) however the stereo has a large time display etc anyway for anyone wanting to do the job I'd highly suggest doing so

During your install you plugged the factory Aux plug from factory wiring harness back in its location then you plugged it into the back of your aftermarket radio. While doing this you said you “made” the patch cable? How did you do this in order to retain factory plug on one end and 3.5 jack on other end that plugs into radio? Thank you in advance for any response. I am only swapping to an aftermarket radio in my Cooper because the aux button on the factory radio does not show up as an option even though it has the factory aux port installed on bottom of radio panel right next to that cover that has to be cut down next to the aux port. It is weird that mine has the factory installed aux port and factory wiring going from it up to and plugged into the factory radio (ran through the factory loom even). Not sure why my aux does not show under “mode” button on radio.

When I removed my console and put the Metra kit in, I have a gap between the gear-shift console and the dash that's showing bare metal and wires. How did you cover that up?

Hi Dean, I have a question for you. The steering wheel control connections...Sigh. I followed the instructions that came with the product. It said to hook up the brown wire for a kenwood headunit, red, yellow, and black. After it was all done and installed I got a green light on the box and no controls. Not having the volume knob is annoying enough but now I dont have my steering wheel controls. Any info on how to get this to work?? thanks -Kevin

What was your solution for the Sirius XM antenna? Does it tie into your existing antenna or did you use the one that came with the Sirius XM tuner. My car already had XM on the stock radio so I am trying to avoid installing another antenna.

PLEASE HELP ME! Anyone knows if the Bluetooth is connected to the Radio or part of the Radio System? The Bluetooth is giving me mad headaches. YES, you heard it correctly, it's giving me MAD headaches. I just want to remove it and if anyone knows it is part of the radio? If it is, I can get rid of the radio and YES I DO NOT mind. I'd rather have headaches free, I can live WITHOUT a radio. THANK YOU !!!!
