@grock1980 Perhaps understand it's not oil that is leaking but the compression in the cylinder, the leak down measurers the compression loss. You might want to watch the Octane ratings video for the 4 stroke engine cycle as that might help with understanding how compression works.

@BIGRAE93 I'm going to be honest and say that this is the first 5.3 that I have ever worked on. Finding a noise can be tricky but in a situation like yours you might try and get your hands on a chassis ear. I did a video on Finding A Noise that might help you. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

@killman1971 I agree, thanks for the comment and the story of 540K! My dad had a 77 Suburban with a 350, the speedo broke at 150K years before it was retired and that engine hardly ever had a problem, leaky water pump was about it.

@TheTexasCoder It does seem like lack of maintenance and perhaps heavy use may be the cause of the failure. I didn't notice anything abnormal with the coolant. As for the condenser it really didn't look that bad and to be honest I'm more focused on swapping the engine and trans than the condenser at the moment. I too like the engine. Thanks for the comment.

@IIGrayfoxII Good salvage yard for one. There are a variety of reasons it may only have 10 miles, I've seen cars get wrecked as they drove off of the lot, I've also seen cars that were damaged on delivery. Perhaps it will help not to think of cars as expensive things that you buy but rather as 'products' that can be damaged and discarded.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@jackeline152001 I wouldn't say that you don't necessarily need a repair but rather do your best to keep up on the oil changes. I'm really not sure what the mechanic was referring to but I would say keep up on your oil changes and perhaps change your PCV valve as that is what helps vent the crank case of unwanted gasses that may contain humidity and moisture.
@ericthecarguy14 жыл бұрын
@Vanuatoo It has a core charge on it so it's going back to the yard. I have already asked them if I could take the piston out to inspect it so I'll be able to make that video before I send it back.

@chevyshaun454 Sweet, thanks for weighing in on this as I've had a lot of questions about what caused it to fail, my guess is rough use and lack of maintenance. This is the best GM I've worked on in some time, I still have nightmares about those Northstar head gaskets.

@Explainagainhow Unfortunately that is not just the UK that has that problem, the states are full of opportunists but for the most part I think mechanics are honest but they may lack knowledge in certain areas that gets them into trouble from time to time. Thanks for the comment.

@Falewick I'm sorry but did you watch the entire video? I often keep the fasteners with the parts that they go with after removal. Organization is key to a repair like this.

@MrSidnasty Hard to say, it's not good to run a tank empty with an electric pump as the sediment in the tank gets concentrated at the pump inlet and the lack of fuel makes it so the pump overheats. I would start by checking the fuel pressure just to be sure fuel pressure is the issue before replacing any parts.

For SUV applications, it is rated at 320 hp (239 kW) and 340 lb·ft (461 N·m) of torque; for pickup truck applications, it is rated at 315-320 hp (235-239 kW) at 5200 rpm and 335-340 lb·ft (454-461 N·m) at 4000 rpm Nice hot rod engine with a gang of torque. A bit of advise, Use the 10 mile converters. Those trucks have an issue with plugged converters. Also check the transfer case for a leak on the passenger side close to the top and rear of the case. They have a washer inside that rubs through the case and leaks. No need for a gasket at the transfer case when reinstalling, just a bit of silicone will be fine.

@service1956 Dexos is now required by GM on ALL 2011 and newer vehicles. It really helps with what GM calls the High Feature V6 engines which have timing chain issues. AFM as far as i know doesn't cause loss of compression issues which is what this truck has. The oil shield update i believe is actually a valve cover update on the driver side. AFM lifters were the next parts replaced. And my dealer never tore down an engine to replace pistons and rings we just replaced the engine.

My father is an expediter and drives Chevy Express vans. These vans usually last a long time with low engine repair. He had the front most cam lob get wipeout out @ 515k miles, several water pumps and radiators, and a few problems with sensors before it was totalled out @ 540k miles. The only problem that is a major problem GM has with these engines is the mickey mouse small little exhaust manifold bolts which randomly break. The engine in the video was not taken care of.

@ZRider359113 жыл бұрын
My dealer has only replaced 3 engines i think for this concern. Also it's pretty much impossible to run one these engines out of oil for this. A message appears in the Driver Information Center saying low engine oil, add oil. There is a bulletin that runs you through a long list of checks. Also, Eric if you read this. Why did you fight with the fuel lines down by the ABS modulator and not just remove them from the fuel rail on the intake? Would of been alot easier.
@rexburn195511 жыл бұрын
this is a very common problem in the 07 to 09 Chevy's with the active fuel management. there's a few things that happen. the pressure relief valve inside the oil pan will spray oil onto the underside of the piston rings and they will start to stick allowing blow bye and oil consumption. this is usually on cylinders 1 and 7. GM sells a shield that goes over the oil pressure relief valve to correct this problem.
@LoneWolfAngling12 жыл бұрын
the heads off the 5.3 you pulled out are worth 350-500 alone for the pair! the intake goes for 250-350 with the Throttle body still attached and both are considered an upgrade to the older 5.3 models!

Hello Eric, this may be off topic from the video I am replying to, but I have a question. awesome. i know when i took the engine out of the 07 avalance, rebuilt it and put it back in i left the ac in the vehicle. i unbolted the ac compressor from the side of the engine and lifted the engine out. the bottom bolt at the back is a pain on it, had to use a 15mm ratchet wrench and it probably took me an hour, and the thing was up in the air.
