Aisin= 'eye sin' or 'eye shin'... the actual pronunciation is like halfway between S and SH so I just say 'eye sin'. But idk you could say 'eye shin' to keep it thematically consistent with the body parts and whatnot.

Also fun fact MANY Volvos used Aisin transmissions, including the 850 and virtually every other 5 cylinder volvo. However Volvo couldn't fit the Aisin transmission beside the transverse inline six, so they went to GM who had a transmission where the gears were turned around the other way and it would fit. But that's also why the inline six volvos are less reliable long term. Not that GM makes bad transmissions per se, it's just... Aisin is the GOAT. They make the auto box used in the hilux/4runner/tacoma.

This car just screams mid 00s upper middle class. These were the cars for people who had money but didn't want to drive a Mercedes-Benz or Land Rover. It's aged decently well. I've never seen retracting seats like that. The engine may be reliable but once computers got involved Volvo lost their reputation of tractor-like reliability. They're not cheap to keep running.

@@jimlopke8699 I've had mine with the diesel engine for 8 years ,transmission needs valve body replacement,interior arm rest breaks,seats leather falls apart, modules don't communicate with each other all the time properly so random codes show up,window regulators work or don't work randomly,parking sensor module gets moisture in it so works whenever it wants ,don't start me on suspension and engine mounts ,Volvo used to be bulletproof but now the feel is very cheap and flimsy,I have Mercedes, subaru and Lexus also and all of em are bulletproof compared to the volvo,and parts cost more than the Mercedes parts which is nonsense

I'm not sure what you mean by "once computers got involved". Volvo has been using computers in their cars since the early 70's. They invented the O2 sensor lambda loop control for the catalytic converter. They followed suit behind BMW in the 80's with motronic-style fuel injection. They were 100% computerized while american cars were using throttle body fuel injection and distributor ignition.

Yamaha is well known for working with Toyota on their engines. The 1ZZ, the 2ZZ, the 5.0 V8, and the LFA V10. They are very reliable engines, and the V8 and V10 are some of the best sounding engines ever made.

There are literally only 2 engines toyota ever made WITHOUT yamaha's help which car enthusiasts care about. The 2JZ... which is probably their only decently breathing engine head and it still gets circles ran around it by BMW (until you add boost because the bottom end is built like a tank). And the 1UZ which is a completely uninspiring engine with no enjoyment factor, but like a ford modular or a chevy small block it's ready to be tuned to the 9's. Beyond those two, if you ever hear about a toyota engine sounding good, revving good, being fun to drive, or making good power, it's at least partially developed by yamaha

@@Darylrb1983 mine has been rock solid, and I doubt the transmission has ever had any sort of service done. Only mechanical failure has been an intake manifold gasket, which wasn't a big deal. Everything in it still works, from the turning headlights to the DVD player

I'm a current owner of an S80 sedan with this engine...Mine is a 2010 Executive, and has a few more party tricks than this thing. A rear seat refrigerator, laser-etched Swedish crystal glasses, Garmin pop-up Nav system, Dynaudio Surround Sound System, upgraded leather that is heated, cooled, and massaging. Amazing car, but boy is it a pain in the ass to maintain.

it's a common misconception the the V8 was designed by Yamaha. The B8444S engine was designed by Volvo, then built by Yamaha with the Volvo design and specifications.

@@perplxxd The P2 platform, which is the dominant Volvo in the early 2000s. The S80 and XC90 with the 6 cylinder were paired with a horrible GM 4 speed automatic. They would go out all the time. The AWD systems (Haldex couplings) on any of the cars was horribly weak and unreliable. Collar sleeves stripping, angle gears breaking, Haldex computer water intrusion. The R cars and V8s were perhaps the worst offenders because they were near 300hp. Fuel pump modules were placed in the wheel liners of the cars in the initial years. The strut bearing does not have a gasket separating it from the strut tower, and the bearing is made of cheap steel, therefore allowing corrosion of the strut towers. Beyond the bad 4 speed was the Aisin AW55 5 speed which was sometimes finicky. The 5 cylinders are equipped with a horrendously complicated PCV system. I owned 3 P2 cars. They are kinda cool when they worked, but they would just throw me constant little issues I had to keep fixing. If you get one that's maintained suuuuure it'll be good. But these aren't sporty cars. BMWs are unreliable but its okay because the product when it works is a sporty fun machine. P2s are comfy but nowadays are just really sketchy to try and daily.

Volvo designed the engine. Yamaha developed it for production and produced it. Volvo didn't have the necessary production capabilities to produce a low number of V8 engines which is why it fell on Yamaha. Good thing they chose Yamaha though and not some other company.

I got an 06 V8 in the same color. She's been a pretty solid runner. It has 195k miles and still runs like brand new. It's had some hiccups, but I'd say they are about as reliable as a Toyota or Honda. With the added benefit of better rust proofing the Germans and Swedes are known for. Although a Honda is much easier to service than any Volvo. So if you do by one, have patience or find a good mechanic.

My parents bought this new from the factory. Volvo used to have a program where you could pick your new car at the factory in Sweden. Then ship to the USA when you were ready. Anyway, they still have it and it's been rock solid. Just had our 1st major expense, real main seal leaking. Have to drop the engine to repair. Other than that, I love driving it and love the V8. Also Volvo seats are some of the best.

The "W" button is for winter. It locks out 1st gear. Depending on exactly which version of the AWD system that one has, it may also allow for extra wheel slippage before engaging the brakes, but primarily the button next to the shifter is just there to lock out 1st so you start in 2nd. I had a Volvo without traction control, and starting in 2nd makes a HUGE difference in getting moving without spinning the wheels.

Owned and driven a number of Ford-era Volvos (P1, P2, P3) and their bodywork is top notch. Here in Canada 15 year old Volvos look better and rust less than most 5 year old cars. Unfortunately most other components have not held up well. The engines are reliable but parts are expensive (on par or more than German brands). Automatic transmissions are weak and tend to slip as early as 100kkm; most owners write their car off instead of rebuilding the Aisin autobox. A lot of suspension and auxillary components are either not very well designed and/or not easy to work on. And the quality of trim pieces are shoddy at best, "wtf were you smoking Volvo" at worst. But despite all that, Ford Volvos are still IMO the most dependable European luxury cars from that late 90s to early 2010s era.

Im inclined to agree. I was given a 2001 2.4T V70 from a family member in September 2022- it had 180,000 miles when i got it and it currently sits at 210,000 (320,000km). Im in Atlantic canada and was shocked to find the galvanized body to be totally rust free when i put it on the lift with my mechanic. Comfortable seats, wonderful sound system and a design that is aging very nicely. This car has another 10+ years left in its body as long as i can stay on top of the engine and transmission. Looking forward to a few years with this car!

@@cameronlovesevolve V70 bodies are indestructible, I'm not surprised. Pay extra attention to your PCV, throttle body, axles, tie rods, transmission, alternator, and handbrake. Non Haldex cars are the most reliable ones.

The Buick V6 was based on that aluminum V8 they had, Chevy V6 was based on the SBC, and while Ford claimed the Canadian Essex was a clean design it definitely took many elements from the SBF.

they're different engines. The SHO is a sand cast closed deck whereas the Volvo v8 is a die cast open deck. They do share some common specs that's mostly because they're both transverse mounted V8s.

Volvos from the mid 80's have always used other mfg parts. My father had an 850 that had a VW diesel engine, and a toyota transmission. Being a diesel, it was slow. It had turbos but they were a day behind. Think like a turtle or you might get in a situation that gets in someone's way.

There are others, but not Toyota, developing an Android-based infotainment system and there is Android automotive. For those who have older model cars, you can replace the factory unit with an Android unit (also comes with Apple CarPlay)

They are okay. The V8 only has 300 or so hp which Volvo's own Inline 5s were already making at the time.... So why get the V8? Hence why few did. Especially as the recession hit. The engine itself is pretty cool, and yea XC90s are just okay. Wouldn't buy one myself though.

Because the turbo 5s that could from Volvo were in the P2 R cars which were tragically garbage cars, with their delicate 2.5 block cylinder walls and Monroe 4c suspension systems and haldex systems that couldn’t handle the torque. Absolute garbage cars, coming from someone that’s owned a couple.

@@markalman1241 It is reliable, smooth, and a very nice motor I will give you that. I want to clarify I am not defending the P2R motor myself, I owned 2 of those and I loathe the engine. I was merely handing out a reason for the sales being so lackluster for the V8 XC90s, and why they are so rare and desirable at this moment. And to also add on that the P2 platform in general is not known for reliability. The sad let down is that they are kinda cool, but their old electronics, the AWD systems which is laggy and unreliable, and the mediocre ride quality, means that unless you DO get the V8 youre stuck with a slow, old, unreliable, swedish boat

Kudos to Volvo for not cheating out on the transmission and for choosing the ONE good Yamaha engine made (V8). Infinity overcharged for their vehicles and use their own Horrid Jatco transmissions that don't last.
