I loved this series. Fortunately, the IndyCar Series has since adopted many things used in Champ Car (push-to-pass, paddle shifters, turbo engines, red-option tires) and are now introducing standing starts in select races in 2013. Now if we can just get back to Surfer's Paradise! :-)

Champ Car (aka CART) had the best cars & engines! They sounded great to boot. Those turbos spooling up are lovely ear-candy. "Team Bombersports" is right...Champ Car was "too ambitious early... and too expensive & advanced... for their own good". I agree with that. As of Feb 2018, F1 has finally seen the light!! F1 is moving from normally aspirated to Turbocharged engine setups! CART was definitely wayyyy ahead of the game but too early. Even Indy & F1 wasn't ready for the shows they (CART) were putting on in the 1990s-2000s. I used to live in the apartments up the street (Pine & 3rd) and for several days out of the year I had the best "alarm clock" when the LB GP came to town!

CART was the greatest open wheel series that ever existed. Indycar could take a step forward by changing the look of the current chassis. They have made a huge mistake with that thing by not acknowledging that looks actually matter to the fans. I think they only reason they have the fans they do right now is because people realize they have to support the only game in town or it will also go away. Bring back the turbo V8 now while F1 is stepping down to the V6. Make it happen, Indycar!

In my mind, CART/Champ Car, will always and forever be the premier indy racing series by which everyone and anything indy racing related is compared. The cars, the drivers, the tracks, nothing can compare to it. Indy racing nowadays has done some good things to improve the series, but they still need major major changes. they need a new chassis, a new engine. The cars dont even look like indy cars, they dont sound like it.

IndyCar now is basically CART leading up to the split! The league is dominated by Penske, Chip Ganassi, and Andretti, the big three teams, although smaller teams do play somewhat of a prominent role! The cars are technologically-centric! There are mostly international drivers, although we do have a pretty good group of American drivers like Josef Newgarden, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Alexander Rossi! Also, the schedule greatly resembles an old CART schedule from the 90s with 2/3 road and street courses as well as 1/3 ovals! IndyCar is even going to classic CART venues! They have been racing at Road America since 2016! They will be going to Portland on Labor Day weekend! Also, next year what is now WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is replacing Sonoma as the series' Northern California stop! IndyCar is doing pretty good for itself!

Are people still whining about Champ Car going away? It sucks, but seriously - Indycar has been the stronger for merging with it. America isn't a natural open-wheel racing country, so two open-wheel series were never going to work. In addition, I think Champ Car went too ambitious early - the cars were almost too expensive and advanced for their own good, and it was running new races in new countries almost every year. No stability it seemed - I read a stunning stat that Champ Car didn't go one season without at least one race being cancelled. The way I see it, it's sad that Champ Car is gone, but the best lessons of it - road courses/street courses, the teams, Push To Pass, option tires etc - have been absorbed into Indycar. Final point - don't hate on Indycar for merging Champ Car - CCWS went bankrupt, they were gone, and Indycar bought out their assets and combined. They could've just left it to rot, but instead they took the best parts of the series and combined it.

You have got to be kidding me. "America isn't a natural open-wheel racing country"?! Have you been living under a rock? America invented open-wheel racing. Also, you're right. The country couldn't sustain 2 different series. However, you clearly don't remember Tony George's greed was the reason for the split in the first place. He tried to force out the non-Americans and make the CART/IndyCar/USAC calendar include primarily ovals. And no, IndyCar is not stronger. Attendance and tv ratings are way down from the times before the split. This is because the split caused a sponsorship rift too. All of the teams with the best sponsors stuck with CART, but they lost the Indy 500 because of George's selfishness. CART had the far superior car as well, but the big issue for its success was the Indy 500. It was always the better series in the matter that it had better drivers, cars, racing, and tracks. If George had left the series alone, NASCAR would be an afterthought, just like it was back in the 90s. The reason IndyCar never folded was because of the Indy 500. That will always be its saving grace. If you take champ cars of 10-15 years ago and replace the terrible DW12 with them, the quality of racing and excitement will automatically increase. People like speed and sound. The IndyCar iterations of the last 10 years do not have it, making the product on the track suffer. No, IndyCar never took the best parts of champ car because the best part of champ car was the car. It wasn't too expensive. It was just too expensive once sponsors left because the Indy 500 was no longer a CART event. It's sad we'll never see open-wheel racing in the spotlight again, just because some idiot who controlled the biggest race in the world was selfish.

mchaseross13 I consider that Indy is reunited today with a much better championship, with slopes of all kinds, a penalty that has clues that unfortunately no longer part of the calendar, as some of the time CART in their golden years. A pity that there were fights with some companies who care for oval like Phoenix, Michigan, Miami. But the current Indy is much more interesting and attractive and if it was not "hidden" in a channel such as NBC Sports, could be much better with the audience. The biggest problem in races is the lack of public in the oval except Indianapolis. I saw the Pocono races and Iowa last year and the public was much lower than expected.
@mchaseross13
@mchaseross13 9 жыл бұрын
Raider, I agree the racing is still very good, but the speed and sound of the cars is still a very big deal. Look at F1 right now. People are considering boycotting the sport because of the engine changes. IndyCar's switch to the V6 turbos had a similar effect. I wish they were on a different network, and I think that's what is holding the sport back from a resurgence. Yes, there are good races on the circuit, but great races that CART held such as Laguna Seca, Road America, Cleveland, and Portland are no longer on the schedule. Those tracks produced some of the best racing the series saw and would still do so now. I also feel Circuit of the Americas would be a superior choice to Houston. It's an awesome track and facility in an even better city. Attendance is really bad though. Even when the IRL was around, Texas used to draw a better crowd. Even now, it's the #2 highest attended race on the calendar, even over Long Beach. The sport is hurting badly, even though it's producing great racing. Many things need to change with the series, and a quicker/more powerful/louder car might be the first of many things to get the series going.

And look what we see in Formula 1 that Bernnie Ecclestone turned. A category that is running away from its roots (Europe) and is concentrating its races in countries that literally has no tradition in motorsport (only profit interests). My opinion: the Indy lost much with the twelve years of the split that divided the category CART and IRL. Indianapolis lost her magic for a few years taking his race unknown or of questionable quality pilots. It never occurred to split, we would have a category that today would be the best single-seaters. Principal of it all? Bernnie Ecclestone? Yes, he came to hate the American category for the success she had and the fact of Formula 1 in the 90s be in serious trouble, especially security. Tony George? Yes, the fury of his Indy want to make a more "American" (with more home riders and less foreign) literally was a failure, running on tracks that were most dangerous to single-seaters (Charlotte and Dover), little public largely races . Only one lane of the early days of the IRL was used until today, Texas. But the problem of Indy has more depth those classes of access (the years when the Indy Lights barely 10 cars line up in a grid and now it at least changed a bit after the Andersen went on to manage the Road To Indy), the question of the TV (this contract that Tony did with Versus turned NBC Sports that almost hid the category), traditional tracks that ended up leaving the scene. The exit? Some things that Mark Miles and Dereck Walker has made are paying off. Now in 2016 we will centenary of the Indy 500 in 2018 possibly a new aero package. What is lacking today is a new format to attract more riders to the Indianapolis 500, and the other two races of 500 miles to Pocono and Fontana.

It’s ironic how Tony George’s IRL today in 2019 resembles what Cart was in 1995 even bringing back the roll bar and dumping the air box. Where are the American dirt track drivers and the all oval series without turbo chargers? I actually prefer it now to IRL which felt like a wannabe open wheel Nascar. But it won’t be popular again until you get drivers with personality such as like AJ Foyt, Tony Stewart, Jacques Villeneuve, Paul Tracy and Juan Montoya. Today’s drivers from Dixon, Pagenaud, Newgarden, Bourdais, Sato, Marco, Hunter Reay, and Graham are all boring. It’s concerning when a old F1 driver like Alonso is the biggest attraction to your series when he wasn’t even in the Indy 500.
