Thanks for creating & sharing this video. My dad used this DIY video to replace the right rear lateral arm in our 2008 Elantra" run about" vehicle. Like you, our Elantra rattle / thumping sound over bumps for the last 6.5 years is now gone. We can still hear minor sound in its left rear area but 95% of the sound is gone - by replacing the right rear lateral support arm. So yes, your video saved my dad hundreds of dollars of sound diagnoses checks.

Good for you. I had mine replaced with all new bushings (other than trailing arm bushings), new end links, new rear absorbers, and a month later, the right side having knocking noise over sharp bumps and I got no clue what could caused it because everything back there are all new and well tightened. Brake pads have no play and caliper pins are well greased too. No loose shields or exhaust either. Pressing the car up and down and rock side to side couldn't simulate that knock either. Really challenging.

Thank you. I was ready to replace wheel bearings on the right rear wheel. I bought the lateral arm from Amazon for $22.00 (same part from Hyundai for $135). My 2008 Elantra with 74k made a horrible clunk over bumps and dirt roads. That's what it was. Again, thank you. Casey C.
@bdubbyabt5 жыл бұрын
Casey Clevenger did the noise sound like it was coming from the rear? Mine sounds like it’s coming from the front as it makes the noise the moment the front suspension goes over the bump or anything.

Thanks for posting this. I have an '03. I may replace mine when I do my rear wheel bearings. My left rear has just begun to squeak. Thanks for the advice on an alignment afterwards. I have 250K+ miles on mine, and it still runs like a champ.

+ThePariss333 30+ MPG all the time. I get 34 on long road trips (highway) Oil: Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-30w, I switched from conventional to synthetic @ exactly 50k miles after engine was broke in. (bought the car new) Miles between changes 3k-5k. I like synthetic, because if you miss @ 3k it's really okay for up to 7.5k miles. Replace air/oil filter @ every oil change. I've changed countless sets of spark plugs, brake pads small stuff, flush fluids etc. Replaced 1 timing belt ~ 200k. I just fix stuff when it breaks. Take good care of your car, and it'll last forever. Hyundai makes good cars.
@datamaggot9 жыл бұрын
Hello, sorry, i use 5W-30 Mobil1 synthetic from walmart (not 0w-30) I have the original engine, I bought the car brand new. Manual Transmission. Automatics are terrible, sorry. My friend has a later model elantra 2012 and he is getting good MPG like you are. That's great! re timing belt, mine was ok, I just replaced it for prevention. If you let the timing belt fail, you will kill the engine. buy a haynes mechanic manual (book). cheers!

Wow this is wonderful and hopefully the answer! I have paid over a $1000 to try to figure this out. I'm asking the mechanic to replace those tomorrow and show him this video! Thank you thank you! I am so thankful for you and your video!!

Damn, i hope all that money hasn't gone to a mechanic or shop, if not, you need to find someone else. They should had fixed it the first time. It's not rocket science for someone who works on vehicles daily.

in some cases, the camber adjustment bolt and nut needs to be tightened, this is the one on the lateral arm. Sometimes after an alignment the tech may not torque down the nut enough to where the camber adjustment plate will rattle and it was driving me nuts, until I decided to take the lateral arm off and check if the bushing was worn out. The bushing was fine, and after putting it back and tightening up the camber nut and bolt , the rattle went away.

Check trailing arm. Middle of bushing [what holds the bolts]will spin due to it separating from bushing.You can use a pry bar to move the bushing sideways . This will caused the lateral arms to go bad. Ask me how i know..

I have the 2007 Elantra limited and it has done it since day one. I bought it new from the dealer and it’s always done it. I’m to the point now that I’m sick of it and want to fix it. I have 101000 miles on the car now. Again it was doing this since I drove it off the lot as a brand new never been owned car. To me it seems to be coming from the front end...the thud. Could it be the rear bars still when it sounds like it’s coming from the front and does so the second my front tires go over the bump? Also, it doesn’t do it on every kind of bump. It’s certain bumps like the ripples on a dirt road or the area over a crack in the pavement where it has been patched with a black tar like substance. Generally the smaller bumps not the big ones.

thank you. Dealership calls it the trailing arms btw and was quoted 276 for labor on both.. Rear lateral arms right and left on rear end suspension

yes these control rear toe so ensure you check your alignment. typically the ball joint end goes bad or the cam bolt gets loose. if it's not these then check sway bar links or the very lower "pillow ball" bushing which can cause a similar noise.
@jhonatanalvarez055 жыл бұрын
Sway bar links also cause similar noise and problem on the vehicle's ride.

@ThePariss333 The upper bolts are cam bolts, and their orientation determines the toe-in of the rear tires, so it is best to mark the orientation of the bolt to the upper mount prior to loosening it and removing it, so one can put it back in the same orientation. That's the part that is being adjusted on the rear wheel portion of a 4-wheel alignment.

Astonished that this was not found by the "pros". Had a loud thump from the back of my 2010 Elantra Touring yesterday, from the left side, that continued to vibrate with the vehicle movement. Jacked up the car, removed the wheel and could see how the lateral shaft had "sunk" in its housing. The bushing had deteriorated. Taking it to the shop anyway, too onerous to fix from the ground. Thanks for the video! Is it like a hopping/bouncing audible sound? Almost hollow like? I have an Elantra Touring 2012 so not sure if the parts and build is the same. But, I replaced the rear (and front) struts, mounts, sway bar, etc., and the noise is still very audible. The ride is definitely better and smoother but that sound is there. Especially when going slowly on roads or speed bumps.
