INSANE TRANSFORMATION & All Of Mods -2009 Corolla S Turbo 5MT||INSANE TRANSFORMATION on 2009 Corolla
I've been asked by a lot of people to do an overview of my 2009 Corolla S 5MT that I turbocharged. I've done a lot of suspension, chassis, and other mods in addition to the turbo kit. I go around the car in this video showing and explaining what I've done to turn my Corolla in a fantastic canyon carver and all around blast to drive. Please hit me up with any questions about my build. Enjoy the tour!
Update - Since I did this video I have upgraded both my front and rear brakes. Here are the links to those mods too.

Jim I like how you added the turbo and moved the battery to the trunk. I totally agree with you that people don't realize that Corolla has good handling with a little modification and they can go fast. I have a automatic 2010 Corolla LE the car has over 200,0000 mileage, I change my own oil full synthetic 0W 20 high mileage since my mileage is high. I have Megan Racing Coil over spring. I am impressed with struts bars you have on your car. I love how you still have your audio system with lots of room in your truck. I have a 9 Android after Market car stereo

My first car was a 2001 Corolla S 5-speed and today I own a GRC. But everything you did to this car is what I wanted to do on my old Corolla when I was 16. As an adult, figured easier to just buy the GR but I love what you did here and enjoyed watching this video. Would love to see this thing in action - maybe have it try keeping up with your grc on a twisty road!
@jimsgaragetoys

It would be fun but the GRC being purpose built from the factory just feels tighter chassis wise. I do love my 2009 Corolla Turbo S though and it's a fun car to drive. I do love the fact that it has a sunroof and it's a great road trip car. It's not as good as my GR Corolla but it's still very, very good and a lot of fun. And I built it! 😍🔥😉

@@petermccarthy8720 The suspension upgrades transformed my car before I added the turbo power. The 2009 Corolla had 3 stereo options. One was the standard 4 speaker system, the upgrade was a 6 speaker system, and the JBL system was the top of the line. I listened to all 3 and the JBL was 10x better. It came with a better head unit, 8 speakers and a digital amplifier. I've since upgraded the head unit to a Kenwood with Garmin GPS, ACP, AA and all the other goodies.

My 2010. Daily driver. Wish I had a bit more go when the stop light turns green. This looks way more than I wanna pay. I punch every green light or stop sign like I'm racing but it's just the way I drive. Get to the speed limit and drive with a purpose. I take off a lot and need to hit 55 quick to match traffic on the highway. Best upgrade for quicker acceleration? Not racing or anything. Just stopped to highway as fast as possible in daily driver
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys Жыл бұрын
I would install a throttle controller first and foremost. Something like a Pedal Commander can make a huge difference to the feel of the car when accelerating and they've been proven to help with acceleration. Allowing the car to breathe better will also help but it needs to be done in all 3 phases to be of much benefit. If you want to do this do all 3 I/H/E to get the best benefit. A lightweight crank pulley from NST can also help. If you upgrade your wheels make sure to get lightweight wheels, lowering unsprung weight can help a lot too.

In what order would you recommend suspension upgrades ? I want to turbo in the future but for now I tend to drive quick and would love for it to just handle like you speak. Need to do it in phases though
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 9 ай бұрын
I would always recommend suspension, chassis, wheels & tire upgrades first. Then move on to power and brake upgrades. For brakes you can look at much better pads but if you turbo it I would look at a big brake kit to prevent fade from higher speeds. As far as suspension alone I would do wheels and tires first, then front strut brace snd rear sway bar, followed by coilovers.

I had Fords in the past so I guess I’m going to the dark side lol. To me this generation of Corolla look amazing! Which sites do you recommend getting performance parts for the Corolla?
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 2 жыл бұрын
There are many places to find performance parts for the Corolla but it comes down to what you want from it and how much you want to spend. Obviously a turbo kit is on the high end, but there are a lot of things that can be done for less from intake, headers, exhausts, suspension, chassis, and much more. I could list dozens of companies but if you want to start getting ideas I would suggest looking through the ToyotaNation forum. The 10th Gen Corolla group has been a good one over the years. Here is my build thread that you can look through. www.toyotanation.com/threads/supercharged-mr2s-2009-2zr-fe-corolla-turbo-build-thread.1409258/

Where do you usually drive “in the canyons” from Washington as well
@jimsgaragetoys

Closest to me are all of the mountain and canyon roads around Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams. I'm from New Mexico and travel between WA State and NM every year and I always drive different back roads to find new fun roads. If there are mountains around, there are canyons to be driven. One of my very favorite roads in WA State is Highway 129 in the SE corner of the state. If you are ever in the area it's a must drive though the canyons there. Go to Google Maps and zoom in and you will see the roads as it twists down and up the canyons.

I have to ask, what inspired you to turbo your Corolla? I've always thought of boosting my RX-8, or TSX but it never occurred to me to boost a Corolla. I'll be getting a hand me down 12 Corolla from my mom when she upgrades and just trying to see what's been done to them and what they're capable of.

I've owned many Corollas over the years and have always loved them. When I bought my 2009 Corolla S 5MT I had no big plans for it as I had gone back to school. When I got out of school I was making good money and I loved the car. I started improving the suspension and chassis and it handled great. As I made my Corolla more "me" and to what I wanted I loved it more and more. I had thought about selling it and getting a WRX or STi but I loved the thought of making my Corolla something special. I reached out to Grant and Jesse at Turbokits.com as they specialize in turbocharging NA cars. After a year of convincing them they agreed to design and build a turbo kit for the 10th Gen Corolla. I've always loved the design of the 10th Gen S/XRS and adding a turbo kit to improve power was the best way. I wasn't interested in doing something crazy as I wanted to keep the reliability in tact. I've been able to accomplish exactly what I wanted. I have a lot more power but still get excellent MPG and reliability has still be excellent. And now I have built something that others don't have! I think that's what I love more than anything. I now have a car that is unique, special, and rare! Thanks for the great question!

@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 4 ай бұрын
This was a big area of discussion when I turbocharged my Corolla. I use 5w-30 instead of the 0w-20 that it used before turbocharging it. I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and change it every 5k miles or 12 months, whichever happens first. I did just have my VVTi cam gear rattle fixed by the dealer as I just didn't feel like messing with it with my back hurting me. The Master Tech that worked on it said that the engine was very clean inside and looked great at 130k miles with no concerns that he saw. I've never even thought about using 5w-40. I wish that the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum was available in a 0w-30 as that was my first choice.

ThNks!!
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 2 жыл бұрын
That's a lot to think about! With the ECU options available today I don't think that the DBW is an issue. I've had no issues with mine. If you want to go to crazy power levels like that it will of course require some serious upgrading of engine internals and many other parts. And that's where the issue is because there are many parts that are suitable for a lot of hp. I've not had any issues at 230hp but that is a far cry from 500hp. If you do that build just realize that you will need to pay for custom parts that are built to handle the power or replace the parts as they break a lot more often. It all depends on how you plan on using the car after building it. Any engine would work but the easiest way would be to build a 1ZZ or 2ZZ.

Did the turbski ruin your mpg?
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 2 жыл бұрын
Not at all. If I'm driving it really hard I'll see 22-25mpg but one a complete tank they are always over 30mpg. On road trips I still see 33-38mpg. Overall, it's about 1mpg lower but that's a lot of fun for that small difference!

Nope. I really don't understand the fascination people have with 0-60 times. It's not a drag car. If I had to guess it's in the 6.5-7.0 second range. I love the extra power for ripping through the canyons, mountains and hills. In town I drive it normally other than the fun I have on on ramps. 😂😂😂

I have no idea as things happen slowly over the years. I will tell you though that it's so amazing to drive now that I don't care. I had down things in phases over the years. First was suspension and chassis over many years. Second came the turbo kit and was worth every penny. Third was the major brake upgrades which I did after this video.

Bummer about your Corolla. What Camry did you buy? I love the new Camry SE/XSE/TRD models but I won't buy one since I much prefer driving a manual transmission. I was so hoping that the Camry TRD would have the option of a 6-speed manual with the V6. I'll be buying a GR Corolla though as that will have about the same power but with AWD and shelved manual transmission!
