Resellers are totally trying to fleece clueless people. My wife is going back to school for computer science, so I wanted to get her a new PC and Im like I'll check FB marketplace. See if I can get an older gaming PC. Jesus Christ. I saw an i7 960 based system with everything like 9-10 years old in it for SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS...."no haggling". Every system I friggin saw was overpriced and were all like "no haggling". I just built her a brand new system for 700 dollars total.

i usually love jay more that other techtubers but videos like this remind me that even he cant think outside of his first world box. an NVMe vs a 7200RPM HDD...as if that wasnt bad enough he got a GTX1650 which was completely unnecessary as not only you do have an APU, the vega chip is also not far behind the 1650, which makes the extra purchase itself questionable. And as for a 2009 system, as the others have pointed out,I feel like Jay didnt want to pay for an X58 board so he got an older core2quad. Might be asking for too much but an i7 X 990 or 980 wouldve really shown how well that gen has aged

It would be interesting to see this again today, because 2010 was when we had the intel i series cpus and the nvidia GTX 400 series. It was when we took what was essentially the last step towards modern hardware architecture; we're still using comparable stuff, it's just after 10 years of generational improvements.

Many more exclusives with decent multi-platform games, lots more players online (sure, the paid online on 360, but it was free on the PS3). PCs console ports were still trnasitioning to having proper PC ports or full-on PC versions (like many Capcom games), Japanese developers were still slowly releasing legendary console-only games and franchises on PC but the ports were still not quite there, but better than the early 2000's. A lot of PC-only franchises were now starting to have nice console ports or at least nice versions of these, also, many PC franchises became console-centric or console-only. I would say PC picked back up at middle, and end of the 360/PS3 generation and got seriously mainstream in the PS4/XOne generation.

Case: Cosmos 'S' Sport CD/DVD: No idea, something generic. OS: Vista And a Logitech G5 gaming mouse (The blue one, still my favorite mouse ever) Everything else I moved over from my older dead machine. Came to about £1600. I had that exact same EVGA 9800 GTX+ in the 2009 system! Was so awesome for the time, but I paired it with the E8400 DUAL Core instead of splurging for Quad, and that was when every dev was making the switch over to quad core. BF2: BC and BF3 were two games that forced me to upgrade a mere 3 years later (built in 2008 or 2009, upgraded in 2012 to Ivy Bridge.)

Here I am in mid 2021, the last time I built a system was '09, featuring a!n i7-920 D stepping, clockable to 4.0 Ghz but I just run it stock with an Antek Kühler. I've upgraded the ram, got new SSD's one for boot, one for backup boot, a "ghost" drive, and a new 4 TB spinning drive. Guys, I'm a 60 year old service connected disabled veteran who's wife died of a heart attack 2 years ago when we were both 58. I'm an amputee and somewhere along the line, I forgot that games help with the pain from the amputation, when I was 28, and the 4 spinal surgeries, plus fibromyalgia and severe narcolepsy. When I bought my GTX 970, it was a few hundred and towards the better side of graphics, I looked at new Nvidia cards now and my heart sunk! I can't believe they want the price of a good used car for a graphics card! I have a nice upgrade plan, new Ryzen, x570 motherboard, g.skill ram, either the cooler master XB Evo, or the Thermaltake V21, smaller and lighter because of my spine surgeries. I thought maybe the wraith cooler until I get more money to buy the EK 240 all black AIO, but I guess I'll be holding that GTX 970 for a while. Oh, I have an EVGA plain vanilla GTX 480 just sitting in a drawer, it works fine, but next to it is an XFX card that must have been damaged in transit. So I'll fix up the old box, a HAF 912, how I can with the money I was given as a gift from my dad and find some titles to play, to help me forget about the pain while I'm immersed in Far Cry 2, BioShock 2 or Skyrim 5, maybe some other games I find laying in a box in this little apartment. My cat laying close by, alerting me if I'm going to have an asthma attack, forget to eat or forget my meds. Mr. Nimbus is more service dog than some of the mutts I've seen at the VA hospital but speciesist attitudes keeps him from doing what he loves, protecting me, being a part of me. Thanks for listening guys, it's been harder to find folks who want to listen to an old gamer like me.

I had a i7 920 @4GHz on a TRUE120 air cooler, 12GB DDR3, a 128GB SSD, and dual GTX280s in 09. And those were like stuff that came out in mostly in late 08. I bought most the stuff December of 08, and got the second GPU in 09. That rig you built is more like 07-early 08 high end, and not "expensive" still. I skipped the 9000 series but back then but that Q9400 wasn't really the "expensive" CPU. 🤷‍♂️ I mean yeah, regardless, YES it would still get creamed by modern rigs, but still, there was a pretty big leap in performance from the C2Q 9000 series to the first gen i7s. Not only in IPC but also hyperthreading made a come back. At ~4GHz with the i7 920, I've seen people score ~650-670cb on R15 multicore which is over twice the results you got with the Q9400 (284cb). Again yeah it's way slower than modern stuff but still kinda respectable for such old hardware. Power efficiency obviously withstanding. 😆😅 Same story from the 9000 series Nvidia cards to the GTX200 series. I think you had a doubling of performance nearly, doubling the cuda cores/stream processors and other improvements. Also you can remove the FPS cap in source by using the command fps_max 999 or 0.

Yes.. I am still running a PC that old... Well 2010. X58 platform i7 950. Only things that had been replaced was a video card upgrade to gtx 780 when it came out, a PSU cause they tend to die, and added more ram later on. It's still chugging along...

I seriously took for granted how good GPU prices used to be. When I first started really getting into building my own computer, I bought an 8600 gts. Just a step under the coveted 8800. For $90. That's like the equivalent to the RTX 2080 non ti today. I could run literally every came at the time for less than $100. And it wasn't even a second hand card, it was brand new from Newegg. In fact, I'm pretty positive it was from EVGA of all companies.

When the ATI Radeon 5870 released in 2009 it was their flagship, equivalent of an RTX 4080 today, and it launched with a $379 (!!) MSRP. Compare that to the MSRP of the RTX 4080 which was a staggering $1199. Even AMDs bonkers 5970, which would have been their equivalent to a nVidia's TITAN or xx90 cards, was "only" $699 at launch. Still nothing compared to the first TITAN which was $999 or the RTX 4090 which was a mind-numbing $1599.

Even in the past 5 years it’s changed so much. Computers aren’t just about what game it runs or how fast but the home pc is about looks as well now. 10 year ago the case was to hide all the computer parts but now it’s to show them off. I got a case with 2 glass panels, rgb under glow, motherboard, ram, case lighting fan and graphics card soon to have rgb even my cpu cooler has lcd screen. None of that was even thought of 10 year ago

Man, my kids still play on a 2009 high-end PC: Q9650 overclocked to 3.6 GHz, 8 GB DDR2 overclocked to 1066 MHz and there is a SATA SSD paired with a somewhat recent GTX 1050 Ti. Still works like a charm.

I'm still running an Intel i7 from 2011 with 8gb RAM and a Geforce 1060 which I bought a few years back. Still hits 60fps in most games on medium settings at 1080p. I've been building PCs for 25 years. When I started, a gaming PC had an effective life of 2 or 3 years. The rate of improvement is slowing down..... rapidly.

Been pretty curious about that, my i7 920 ran GTA V flawlessly, not sure how frametime would be over 60fps, but I might hook it back up and mess with it a little. Upgraded to a 9600k last year, not a great comparison core wise, but might be fun to poke at. I wonder if it can manage RDR2 at 1080p low/medium, lol. Edit: I went from a GTX 275 to a GTX 950 Ti in 2015, and then a GTX 1080 Ti in 2018, gpus scaled a lot higher than my cpu did.
