How well has this F150 Platinum aged? Watch as I review this truck, look at the typical problem areas and reliability of these trucks, as well as their infamous 3 Valve 5.4 Triton V8 engines.
This has been a "family truck" for the past 12 years, so I have a decent idea about how the truck is in the long-term.

My comment is a little late to the party but one thing that people including the car wizard seem to forget is that in 2009 and 10 the 5.4 three valve Triton engine actually had a second generation of sorts. They made a lot of revisions to the engine as a whole to try to alleviate all of the problems as a stopgap to the 5.0 Coyote engine because the coyote had actually been in development since approximately 2005 and they kept running into hurdles either because they couldn't find the financial means to produce the engine or continue developing it or because the manufacturing processes have not been developed well enough to build the engine. So with that the modifications to the 5.4 included larger galleys more passages for the oil and coolant a slightly larger and higher volume oil pump and more robust timing components. With that being said really you're not going to have too many mechanical issues with the 5.4 of the 2009 and 2010 year. And that's mainly because they had resolved the vast majority of mechanical issues. The head studs breaking is actually just common along all Ford products because they insist on using inferior materials for their manifold bolts but they also don't use large enough bolts or enough of them and this issue is even common on the 3.5, 3.7, and 5.0.

Mine currently has 285k original miles. I love this truck. I'm planning on putter a new motor and new trans once the engine goes. About to be 20 years old and smooth as hell with no leaks or problems. Taken me across the country and back more than once. I hear bad things about the 5.4 but I've seen others who had similar experiences as me. Take care of the truck and it will take care of you

@roadking.118

@RicardoAntrax if it's not taken care of I wouldn't get it. If it has high mileage, open up the heads and you'll see a ton of carbon build up. You'll have to use premium gas to avoid more. I'm not sure what gas is available in Mexico. A huge issue is doing a tune up. It can be a pain changing the spark plugs so I'd take it to a shop. If it has high milage be easy on the engine don't run it too hard. Just stay on top of oil and trans fluid. Keep up with it and take care of it and it will take care of you. Don't baby it tho. Its a truck it can handle a lot. Get your use out of it. I only my bought my recent one because the guy before me put a new trans and rear axel in it. I plan on putting a crate motor in it once it dies

Spark plug blow out is a 2V problem only. The first couple years of the 3V had a problem with spark plugs getting stuck and breaking off during removal, but once the plugs were replaced, you were good to go. The Melling M340HV oil pump pretty much takes care of the oiling issues with these engines, but as you already pointed out, solid routine maintenance goes a long way. Good video.👌🏻

For anyone interested, I just want to point out 2 problems with this video: First, the 5.0 may produce more horsepower and torque than the last year 5.4 but at significantly higher rpms making that extra power basically useless in everyday scenarios. The 5.4 produced 80% of it's torque below 3200 rpm, making it better suited for hauling/towing than the 5.0. That's why when you get a newer F150 with the max towing package you're forced to get the 3.5 EB. The second problem is that despite what the car fairy claims, the oil port size is not a problem. The oil pressure problems in the 3v 4.6/5.4 come from the flawed oil pump that Ford used in those years. The oil pump loses pressure under moderate rpms, starving the top of oil when it needs it the most.

I've like a lot of things about the 5.4. One being the sound and another being the reliability.
@ryantracy1531

Exactly. New oil pump and timing components and you have yourself a great powerplant. I have a 2011 expedition where these problems were corrected. Tows pretty good even with 3.11 gear ratio on 6spd. I might get 3.55s and add an 8.8" E-Locker. Keeping it forever.

@calebmelton5989
@calebmelton5989 2 жыл бұрын
It's not useless. People said same thing about the old Chevy 5.3 . I learned to just give it more pedal and you get your trailer to speed quicker. The 5.0 drivetrain actually gets it to the tires as better as well
@kingdaniel3519
@kingdaniel3519 2 жыл бұрын
@@calebmelton5989 I disagree. I stand by what I previously said. The 5.0 isn't as suitable for hauling/towing as the old 5.4 was. It has to work harder to move the same amount of weight. The newer 5.0s, of which I'm specifically talking about 2020+, make peak horsepower at 5750 rpm! And peak torque at 4500 rpm. Meanwhile, the old 5.4 made peak power at 5000 rpm and peak torque at 3500 rpm. That's a huge difference in power and torque delivery! Even if it didn't produce as much as the 5.0, it produced it much more quickly and at a lower rpm. While that might not seem like much of a difference, high revving engines don't have a very long lifespan. At least not when compared to lower revving engines that perform the same work.

Well yes and no now adays its a mustang motor. Back in the day the 5.0 was a truck engine. Ford has a track record of taking truck engines and slapping them in sports cars ie ford gt. The mustang was originally meant to be a v6 as the og engine. The 5.4l is the 300 i6 of the modern day, slow, able to tow pretty much anything but getting a woping .6mph. Its a truck engine that does truck stuff and it does it good

My 2010 F150 has been nearly perfect for me. I too have the 5.4l triton. I bought it with 35,000 miles back in 2014 and have owned it ever since. It was and is my first car and has been through a bit but I've always taken good care of it. Oil change every 3500 miles and I recently did the diffs and transfer case. I need to change the plugs soon, have a coolant flush and the transmission fluid changed (drop the pan). I am at 103,000 miles now on it which is relatively low miles but 50 percent of them have been towing anything from a 17 foot aluminum boat to my 21 foot fiberglass triton. The only issue I had with it was when I first bought it... It came from NY and had an exhaust leak at both exhaust manifolds. Whenever I had the mechanic try to change the manifolds, 4 or 5 of the bolts broke (a few rusted and broke on their own). So that was pretty expensive (around $2000) since he had to pull the engine, drill out the bolts and install the new manifolds and bolts. But otherwise the only other thing I have had to do to it was get new brakes and two sets of tires but those are more wear and tear items and not a fault of the truck. Hopefully she gets me through another 100,000 miles no problem. It does have the timing chain slap for around a second or less after it sits for a while and I do have a little ticking. I recently switched to 5w30 instead of the 5w20 oil since that is supposed to improve the longevity of these motors and the cam phasers. Also this truck has been great for me off road in hunting and fishing situations. And it is so comfortable that I would prefer it over a car for road trips. I do typically average around 14.5 mpg every day driving but I can squeeze out anywhere from 18-20 on the highway depending on the hills and how my right foot feels that day. I do have the 5 star tunes for my truck and have been running them since around 45,000 miles. It really wakes the truck up and majorly improves throttle response. It’s pretty dang quick for as large as it is. I have seen people who have reviewed this truck after the tune who have also drove a 5.0 and they said the tune definitely brings it to near or same as 5.0 acceleration. But of course the torque hits very low and makes this engine much better for towing.
@TheNickhammond
@TheNickhammond 11 ай бұрын
Had the same issue with the slap at 95000 mikes and opened it up. The problem was the tensioner gaskets were blown out and starved oil to the cams. I did the whole timing job including new followers, cams, and used the previous gen ratcheting cast iron tensioners. Locked the phasers. Got the 5 star tune for it and put in the Melling HV oil pump. Runs great now and should last.

I have the exact same truck except mine is a lariat. I've had it since 2016 and I love it. I'm getting very close to 150k miles and have had zero engine issues, I take good care of my truck and don't drive it super hard too often. It's pulled my boat all over the south and driven thru 2 feet of floodwaters. All in all, I wouldn't trade mine in for a rocket (but maybe for a 2021 F-150)

I recently purchased a 2009 King Ranch edition truck and I must say, it's absolutely beautiful! The ride is smooth and comfortable just like a Cadillac. Initially, there was a ticking sound, which turned out to be the exhaust manifolds issue that is common in the F150s. Despite having 200k miles, everything feels tight and well-maintained by the previous owner. I particularly love the 3v 5.4 engine. Comparing it to my previously owned 2017 truck with a 5.0 coyote engine, I can confidently say that the 5.4 has more low-end torque, which is great for towing. I plan on keeping this truck forever. If the engine fails I'll just drop another one in as these engines are readily available due to being in production for decades.

My F350 with the 5.4 Liter engine just turned over 200,000 miles last week. After upgrading the spark plugs and coils and replacing the manifolds twice this engine has been the most reliable engine I have ever owned (I'm 67 years old and have owned many trucks over my lifetime). It dosen't burn a drop of oil. I am building a cabin in the mountains 750 miles from our current home making several trips per year hauling an average of 5,000-7,000 lbs. of lumber, equipment and supplies EVERY trip. The secret (other than regular maintenance) is MARVEL MYSTERY OIL. I have been putting it in the fuel tank (3 oz./fillup) and 1 qt. with every oil change since it went over 100,000 miles. This will prevent cam lobe damage, lifters, timing chain follower wear , fuel pump wear, clean fuel injection nozzles and prevent cold starting damage/wear. And no I'm not getting paid by MMO. I had a mentor in the aviation field. He used it in all of his engines. Whenever he overhauled his engines he always took the heads in to have the valves done. They would ALAWAYS ask him "Bill, what kind of oil are you using"? He couldn't tell them because it's ILLEGAL to use "unapproved" additives (by the FAA). He would just say "30 weight why?" they always would say "Well, because there is no wear at all on your cam lobes and your valves look brand new"

Has never had any major mechanical problems. Only thing done to truck in over 15 years was tires, one battery and religiously changing oil every 3K miles ( all normal maintenance). The only non-maintenance item I’ve had problems with over 15 years are brake low pressure sensors. I’ve replaced them and idiot light is on again. Other than poor low tire pressure sensors…. Zero problems. Keep oil changed every 3000 miles and this year 5.4 is a great and reliable engine.

I also have a Banks intake system, throttle body spacer, and exhaust. This combination really woke the truck from it's slumber. I've had the tune on since 2012 and zero issues. Also, I only use 5W 30 oil in my 5.4l with a quart of Lucas Oil additive. This stops the ticking noise from the phasers and makes it purr like a kitten. The 5W20 is too thin for the engine. The United States is one of the only countries to use 5W20, all others use 5W30 in the 5.4l. I think Ford does this to make better MPG requirements only. I could be wrong, but it has worked for me over the last 12 years. I also tow a 7500-8000lbs travel trailer. I live in North Idaho, so most of the places I tow have steep grades at high elevation and the truck does fine. That being said, I would never tow over 8500lbs with any half-ton truck in the Mountainwest....period. It's not a power issue, it's a frame, axle, brakes, transmission, weight etc issue. Unless one likes having the trailer drive the truck or "the tail wag the dog." Admittedly, if one is a "flat lander" as we call them here, then the truck could handle a little more in flat areas near sea-level. I've been thinking about getting a new F150, but my truck has zero issues and is still in mint condition. I'd just hate to get rid of a perfectly good truck. Not to mention the insane prices for trucks these days! Anyway, sorry for rambling on, great video! It's nice to see a review which isn't a new truck that can back or park itself and has a 42 inch flat-screen in the dash.

5.4L 3V are great engines! I have seen some owners really good taking care of their 5.4L 3V and myself too with no issue over 200,000 miles with original cam phasers and timing chains system even old ford oil pump. We always change every 3,000 miles with Ford Motorcraft oil filter and 5W30 syth Blend to keep clean and lubricant much we can to keep these 5.4L 3V running last longer. We thought we have failure cam phaser because it was so loud so we took the test sound ear to cam phasers they are normal, fuel injection making these big noise lol😂.

long oil change intervals are death for this engine family but it is important to realize that the early generations of three valve had timing chain tensioner gasket failure that caused huge oil starvation. The '09 was the benefactor of redesigned tensioners so that problem, along with redesigned spark plugs in mid 2008 and a head redesign in 2008 has made for much better reliability in those areas. The '09's were among one of the best years for tritons in the f-150 of all the year models with that engine. You can still get into trouble with low quality, wrong grade oil and or long intervals between oil changes.

I had a F150 King Ranch with 5.4L. It was a great truck. The MACHO man that had it before me had the oversize tires that made it drive like a log. I pulled those off and turned it into a great driving truck again. Big tires are tempting, but they sure can ruin your ride and your suspension.

I will add another positive comment about the 09 F150 5.4 Lariat. 2nd owner, fleet truck with questionable maintenance, 250 k mi when I bought it. Now with 260 k mi still runs great other than the occasional off-idle rattle which quickly goes away when I rev it. 15 mpg. Uses no oil. Very comfortable for my average size, nice ride, and powerful for my needs. My biggest complaint is the length and turning radius which makes it hard to park in many lots even with the backup camera.

I’ve had a ‘09 S/crew FX4 Luxury edition 5.4 since factory ordering it new. It’s been a great truck however only has low miles at 65k much of which was pulling a 7000 lb. trailer. Over 13 years now I’ve changed the passenger side exhaust manifold, the a/c pump clutch, and when it was fairly new it had two cab leaks around the 3rd brake light and the satellite radio antenna. The engine is quiet with no ticks due to frequent oil changes always using Motorcraft check valve filters, for that matter all fluids throughout the vehicle have been changed faithfully. Last year I changed out the coil packs, injectors and idler pulleys for maintenance just because they were aging even though it probably didn’t need them. With all that said, would I ever consider buying a used one with no way to be sure how the previous owner(s) took care of the 5.4? Not on your life. However my truck is still as new and I’ve been payment free on it for many years now so this ‘09 F150 continues to be money in the bank to me.

As an owner of 2007 5.4 who replaced the engine after only 140k miles, I can easily tell you that he’s absolutely right. Replacing the oil every 3k miles is key on these engines. Anything over that is risking failures on the cam phasers and timing chain and possibly more. Routine oil changes and regular maintenance will go a long way.

It weighs about 7K lbs fully loaded and my truck pulls it just fine. The FX4 trim has 3.73 gearing which helps. I am interested in the new F150 Hybrid, almost double the performance. Its a shame new F150's cost so much these days or else I wouldve had one by now.

FYI, down South, we use 10W-40 full synthetic oil in these engines. It prevents all of the known problems. A local dealership solved (100% solved) the 3V 5.4L warranty issues by doing this. I followed their guidance and at 200K miles, the truck has had zero engine issues, no oil consumption, no phaser knocking, no start up rattle, and no cam timing codes.

Just bought yesterday a 2009 F150 XLT ( 18' wheels) to replace my 2013 Lariat EcoBoost that was involved in a head collision. Miss my luxury truck, but the XLT drives great and was well taken care of..Also same color. But a lot of miles. Watching this video to convince myself that I made the right decision to buy it for $10000 I do put seats up in back and sleep diagonal on a pad..slept like a baby. That was a requirement for a truck after having this on the Lariat SuperCrew.

Bought an 09 King Ranch 2 years ago with 99k miles. The previous owner/owners let the oil changes lapse, so a month after getting it, the engine died, cam phasers went and was a lot of sludge build up. Luckily I got an extended warranty, and after much bickering, the dealer replaced the engine for free with a rebuilt 86k mile engine. Change the oil!!!! Had the cab corners replaced too, terrible design. Runs great now, just normal maintenance, replacing worn parts as they come up. Rust is the main enemy now, Iowa winters ugh!

Awesome video! I have a 2010 f150 5.4L 4x4 here in Canada with 280K km's and for the most part I love it. Best year for the 5.4L was 09-10, mainly because ford fixed almost all the issues. No more shooting plugs, sticking them, badly designed components, etc. The only problems that the 09-10 had was those passenger side exhaust manifold (mine is bad), and Fords crappy weak oil pumps (as explained in the video), which lead to lifter tick and phaser knock/failure. You can get lucky with on-point oil changes and not abusing it. But if you get those symptom's you just upgrade all the timing parts (Phasers, VCT's, tensioners, guides, and maybe even lifters) and get the Milling Hight Volume oil pump. After the oil pump upgrade the engine will last forever. Also, what exhaust does the the truck have?
