At 14:10 you mentioned the two dots from the sprockets were lined up while the cam tool was installed. When you tighten the sprocket bolt the dots are no longer lined up?is there a reason you didn’t keep them lined up? I just finished doing the chain replacement but keep getting exhaust too advanced error. Thanks

@@Ys-qg7nb yes it’s fixed, I took it to BMW to update the DME to the latest software. The exhaust advanced error stopped coming back after they updated it for me. They changed me $150.00. The is did come back about a month later but in the intake side. My camshaft seals on the intake side were bad. I replaced them with the new rubber like seals from BMW. The issue went away. As far as the timing marks on the sprockets(phasers) it doesn’t matter what position they are in. I did have to do a small repair on the intake camshaft cap that covers the seals. I used some JB weld to fill in the groove that the previous (metal) seals put in the cap. I hope that makes since. Check out this video . If the camshaft seals don’t provide enough oil pressure to the intake and exhaust cam gears the timing will fail and the check engine code will keep coming back.

On this mini did you have to put cyl 1 on tdc to remove timing chain. I havemt seen anyone put it on tdc on videos replacing timing chain

I know this is an old comment, but no, all pistons are supposed to be flat. There is a crankshaft locking tool that pins the flywheel in place, which puts piston #1 halfway through its intake cycle

You are suppose to tension the chain before torquing the sprockets VVT 15ft/lb first then 180 degree. Best to use the tool kit tensioner when torquing.

@@andrespaez6493 your oil pickup screen may be plugged with debris. It's also possible that you need a new oil pump. If you had glitter in your oil it could be crank or rod bearings.

There are 2 crank positions where the crank locking tool fit into, could you advise how the pistons should lay for the correct timing?

cylinder 1 should be at top dead

90 degrees before top dead center, all pistons should be at the exact same height, this applies to N12, N13, N14, N16, and N18

So on my 2012 mini I have set the timing like 4 times every time it runs rough, go back check timing and intake is right where should be but exaust is off by a little bit. It's throwing exaust cam code (replaced both actuators and both cam sensors no difference)I'm figuring this is most likely the problem....does it sound about the same problem as yours just on exaust cam instead?

Youve set the timing? Or replaced all the components and set the timing? If youve just set the timing without replacing everything, parts may be worn and need to be replaced before resetting timing. Or maybe you have the wrong chain? Where did you order it?

I set the timing on my 2009 from Alldata procedure. Referenced this video because the Alldata was a bit confusing. Engine cranked with compression but wouldn't start. After many hours I stopped for the day. Next day it cranks without compression. It never ran. It never had any abnormal noises. Wtf?

Found the problem. When the timing system blew at highway speed originally the flywheel bolts must have sheered off. Timing pin wasn't in a correct place. 🤞🏼 the valve didn't get smashed again.

I've never done this and would have loved more detail. You mentioned you removed a cover but skipped showing how it was removed you said you did it. For a newbie like myself a step by step guide is better so I'm not trying to figure this out myself how to remove stuff so I don't break it.

Whatever you guys do make sure your crank pin is fully seated I made the misake of thinking it was and had to redo the timing lucckily I was only a tooth retarded so I locked the crank and took the chain off then moved the cam so the cam lock tool sat right installed the tool put the chain back on and I was back in time. Moral of the story make sure that your pin is in all the way XD

There is a locking pin with the cam alignment tool kit that inserts into the flywheel.

The chain technically shouldn't need to be changed if the car is serviced regularly. Timing belts are different story.

Timing on these HAS to be perfect. The chain Will start to stretch around 70,000 miles and plastic guide breaks up (will start giving false fault codes coherence/correlation fault)so around that distance (crap design)
